1999-2004 Mustang Rear Styling Guide
When it comes to styling the rear of your Mustang the options are almost endless. Virtually any look you are going for can be achieved by modifying a few key components. When looking at the tail end of a Mustang, the parts that are able to be changed are the spoiler, the rear bumper, “Mustang” bumper inserts, decals, taillights, and the list just keeps going on. You can change the entire appearance or just add a decal if you prefer. The first step to giving the back of your Mustang a face lift would be to pick a particular area that you would like to change first and go from there.
Spoilers and Wings
According to the year of your Mustang, the mounting holes for the spoiler are different. The 99-00 Mustangs had wings that mounted at the edge of the trunk lid where as the 01-04 had a pedestal style wing that mounted closer to the center of the trunk. If you’re not willing to drill new holes in the trunk then it is best to stick with a style that will match up to your year vehicle.
You are not limited when it comes to picking a new wing. The two different OE styles are available as well as other variations that were offered for different model Mustangs such as the Cobra R, Roush Stage 3, SVT Cobra, and the Saleen. If you’re looking for more of a unique look, then Steeda has an option for you with a functional race wing that can be complimented by Steeda’s billet winglets.
When you want to change the appearance of the trunk lid itself there are options here, as well. You can choose a honeycomb textured insert that comes in 3 pieces and installs very easily. The honeycomb panel resembles the classic Mach 1 trunk and gives it that aggressive edge. If you’re looking for another option other than the honeycomb trunk panel, there are vinyl decals available as well. They are made from high quality Premium Cast Vinyl and are built to last. These are more affordable and come in black with a matte or gloss finish and white.
Mustang Rear Bumpers, Bumpers Inserts, and Lower Vinyl
The rear bumper is a sure fire way to set your Mustang apart from the rest. There are different rear bumpers associated with the different models of Mustangs. Roush uses valences that attach to both side of the rear bumper while Saleen, Cobra R, Cervini’s, and the V6 and GT model replacements are the entire bumper cover.
There is a rear bumper out there for the look you desire, but make sure it is for the appropriate models. For example, a V6 has a single exhaust tip so buying a bumper with cutouts for two exhaust tips may look a bit out of place.
To go along with the bumper you choose, you also have the option of adding either stainless steel or vinyl “Mustang” letter inserts. Stainless steel comes in a natural finish, chrome or black. The vinyl stickers are more affordable and are available in silver, white, white reflective, black, carbon fiber, black reflective, and chrome. On the GT rear bumper there are decals for the lower valance and they come in matte black, gloss black, and white. This will give your Mustang a look that not everyone has.
1999-2004 Mustang Taillights and Bezels
To go along with the headlights you picked out there are also four different styles of tail lights available. The factory replacement is offered as well as a smoked lens version. There are solid LED taillights which are all LED lights and can be picked up in either red on black.
LEDs: There is an LED model that doesn’t get rid of the original tri-bar look of the taillights as well and is available in black or chrome housing. And last but not least there are euro taillights with a black or chrome option as well. To achieve a more uniform look it is best to select a taillight that will compliment your headlights.
After you have selected a tail light style there are a few things you can add to them. You can go with a sequential tail light kit that is offered as a plug-in kit and a splice-in kit. This kit allows each section of the taillight illuminate in a sequence when braking or using a turn signal. This style of lighting was used on the classic mustangs in the late 60s.
Lastly, there are also bezels available that go around the edges of the taillight itself. They come in chrome and matte black to give the rear end of your Mustang the finishing touch.
Third Brake Light
There are even a couple options when it comes to modifying the third brake light. You can replace the entire unit and pick up and LED third brake light which is available with chrome housing or black housing. Classic Designs offers a third brake light that gets mounted at the top of the rear window if you want to be unique.
Or if you are just looking to change the look of your current brake light then there are decals available for that as well. There is a vinyl tint that smokes the whole lens or there are two decals with “SN95” or “Mustang” cut out in them so that when you press the brakes the letters will illuminate.
Replacement Mustang Fuel Doors
An aftermarket fuel door is a good way to break up the appearance of the rear of the car. You can replace the plain factory fuel door with a Bullitt style fuel door which is smooth or you can opt for one with the “GT” engraving. Fuel doors install very easily and come in chrome, brushed aluminum, and black.
When you buy an aftermarket cat-back exhaust system they usually will be equipped with stainless steel exhaust tips in either 3” or 4” diameter. A nice polished exhaust really adds to that classic muscle car look and looks aggressive. If you don’t have the money to shell out for a new exhaust system, the exhaust tips themselves can be purchased for a fraction of the cost and can be easily installed by your local shop.
Now nothing means business like a nice staggered tire setup. Having a nice wide tire in the rear to fill up the wheel well really looks aggressive, but the tire size is ultimately determined by the width of the rim. The first number in the size of the tire depicts its width. An 8 in rim ideally supports a 245 width tire, 9 in. uses 275, and a 10-10.5in wide rim can hold a meaty 315 size tire. Mustangs can fit up to a 315 width tire with little to no modifications and the only thing required is a capable rim. A tire size calculator will help you dial in the ideal sidewall and other key measurements you'll need to find the perfect rim and tire setup for your specific Mustang.
