Review & Installation Video

Hey everyone I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com and I’m taking a detailed look into Airaid’s Race cold air intake system for all 05-09 Mustang GTs. This kit is designed to give your Mustang a serious boost in performance when paired with a tune, by giving you maximum air flow, which translates into more horse power, more torque, and improved fuel efficiency. The kit comes with everything you need including the intake tube itself, heat shield, washable high flow filter, and all coppers and hardware. Now the tube, and the shield are made from a durable high intensity polyethylene which makes it less susceptible to heat soak, allowing for cooler, more dense air to be drawn into your engine. It also makes for a sleeker appearance under the hood as well. But enough with all the technical talk already we’re here to see how much power this intake is going to put down, but before we go bolting everything up, we need to get a baseline number from our 2006 GT back there. So in stock form our GT put down a total of 269 horse power, and 296 ft/lbs of torque. Now let’s get that stock airbox out of there and install our Airaid intake, which should take you no longer than an hour using standard hand tools. As we mentioned earlier, in order to run this race intake from Airaid, you will need to pair it with a performance tune, we’re going to upload our custom 93 octane Bama tune which is going to optimize your spark timing, adjust your variable cam timing, perfect those air/fuel ratios, and give you drastically improved throttle response. So with all that done and our intake installed lets turn the roller one more time, and see the improvement this intake made on our GT. Our Airaid equipped GT made a total of 296 horse power, and 313 ft/lbs of torque, making for a peak gain of 27 horse power over our baseline numbers, and a gain of 35 horse power, and 30 ft/lbs of torque throughout the curve. So if you and your Mustang are on the endless quest for maximum horse power and you either have a tuner, or plan on getting one in the near future, then you’ll definitely enjoy the gains you see from this race intake from Airaid.

Increase Horsepower and Torque. Airaid Race Cold Air Intake Systems are computer designed to give your engine maximum air flow, which translates into more horsepower, torque and improved fuel efficiency. Airaid Race intakes are dyno tested and tuned for maximum performance and efficiency.

Superior Filtration. This cold air intake not only improves horsepower, but it also provides superior air filtration, since it includes an Airaid Premium Filter with SynthaFlow® technology. SynthaFlow® is a synthetic nano-fiber material that traps the smallest dirt particles down to 2 microns in size that ordinary cotton-gauze “performance” filters just can’t capture. And best of all Airaid Premium Filters are washable and re-usable saving you money.

Required Upgrade. Installation of this Cold Air Intake will require the use of a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for operation.

Application. This Airaid Race Cold Air Intake kit is specifically designed for use on the 2005 to 2009 GT Mustangs equipped with the 3V 4.6L engine. A computer re-tune is required for operation.

What is the difference between this cold air intake and the other Airaid cold air intake (Item # 52100) ? Item # 52100 vs Item # 52109

SuperSan

  • CAI (52100) does not require a computer tune as it comes with a Modular Venturi Tube installed. Race CAI (52109) is an AmericanMuscle exclusive, higher HP and TQ gaining version of the previously mentioned "no-tune required" CAI, which does in fact require a new tune. Can't go wrong with this Race CAI! Getting a tune on your Mustang when doing any type of modding is one of the best things you can do and helps you gain the most from you upgrades! If you don't have a tuner, we offer some great options with our most popular being the SF3 tuner with Free Tunes for Life! Check out the link below!! Question Resolved

Is it compatible with the Pro cal tune from Ford Racing? I have a Pro Cal 2 tune installed in with the K&N filter element in the stock filter box. Will the Airaid CAI work well with this tune?

Turbomoose

  • No I am sorry but it will not it requires a tune as it flows so much more air compared to the stock box and tube.

Do I have to put the custom tune on right after I install this intake??

05blackMustangGt

  • yes. If you don't your car won't run right. You can get the Intake that does not require a tuner. It basically comes with a inlet tube you stick inside the intake.

Best Intake for the Money if the car is tunable

Picked this up at the AM Scratch and Dent tent for 154.99 and it looks like new so Thanks to AM for that. Install was pretty straight forward. Running a AirRaid Diablo Tune with it. The initial difference is incredible and the car moves so much more like a sports car. Great buy and great upgrade

    Big boost in power

I was a bit nervous about doing this. Airaid CAI, GMS 62mm TB, and 91 octane Bama performance tune. It was easy and the power gains are amazing. Two minor issues with the CAI. I needed to trim the GMS silicone adapter slightly to accommodate the angle of the of the Airaid intake tube and the two button head screws need a special torx bit to screw them in. I really wish I knew how much additional power I have now. It seems like quite a bit. Better exhaust sound also.

Race CAI with custom BAMA tune

It took me a little over an hour to install the CAI and retune my 2007 GT. The throttle response is excellent with a "Performance" tune from BAMA. I also noticed that my FlowMaster exhaust is a little deeper and quieter. The instructions are very comprehensive and there aren't very many parts. Be sure to have an Allen wrench set as there isn't one in the kit for the new mass air sensor screws.

    2007 GT

Installation took less than an hour, the directions are right on. Prior to installation I took the car out for a couple of runs to gauge the difference. After install, loading the tunes was easy and there is a noticable difference in the throttle response and it sounds great. I had the car out with the race tune and met up with a challenger, took him from the start and never saw him until we met at the next light.

    Great intake

Very easy to install. I did not dyno before or after so I cannot say for sure if the HP and torque claims are completely acurate but I can say there are definately noticable gains in power and sound with a tune from BAMA. I am completely happy with my purchase and American Muscle. Keep it up, guys.

Airaid Race CAI on 2006 GT

I ordered a package deal with both the Airaid Race CAI and an SCT tuner. Everything came packaged very well. I was very pleased with the appearance and "feel" of all the parts that came. Everything seemed to be of good quality. This was my first foray into anything actually mechanical on a car beyond changing oil, etc, so I took everything painstakingly slow and took a ton of pictures. Total install time was about 2-2.5 hours. (Instructions sheet was "ok." Pictures were subpar, but adequate even for someone who was pretty new to this.) If you are comfortable working on cars, I think it could be done in 45 minutes, honestly. As far as performance goes, I don't know whether most of the gains came from the CAI or the tuner, since you have to run a new tune as soon as you install this CAI, but let me summarize by saying I literally started giggling just pulling out of the garage with the 89 performance tune loaded. I am sure that opening up the airflow helped immensely as well. And, my engine bay looks cooler now. Incredibly happy with the product.

    Get It

Installed in less than 2 hours. Hardest part was finding stock air box mount grommets. Intake fit good and mounted solid. Car pulls hard at all RPM's. This woke up my car even more. There is a big difference between the Airaid and my old cold air intake. I love the performance increase. The intake plus the new ve tune is a great mod with noticeable performance increase. Get this intake, you will not be sorry.

    Great product!

If you're debating between this and the "no tune required" version, please do yourself a favor and go with this one. Yes it means purchasing a tuner, but it is well worth it! The sound is incredible. It's actually fairly tame while at 30% throttle or less, but anything over 30% throttle and this deep growl bellows from the exhaust. I was literally giggling the first time I drove it after the install. I haven't dyno'd it, but I'd say there's no reason to question the claims in hp increase. Install was fairly strait forward. There's a few little quirks that could be ironed out. Such as the rubber seal that fits to the top of the heat shield hitting the intake tune preventing it from seating all the way down above the intake. And the metal clamping bands could have been pre-formed to make getting them on a little easier. Oh, and the pictures in the instructions are a joke. There's several typos and mis-spelled words... However, I'm really just nit-picking. Mainly because there's no major flaws with this product. I highly recommend this CAI in addition to a Bama tune and at least CAT back exhaust. Exhaust isn't necessarily required, but with all the extra air coming in, it definately helps power to be able to get that air out quickly. One final note, there was a drop in low end torque. Not a lot, but noticable. And I can now feel the Charge Motion Control Plates suffocating the engine at high rpms. So CMC delete kit is definitely a must as well.

the product fits like it belonged there from the getgo

first installation was fast and easy and far as the difference it made was like day and night throttle responce was so much better and I could feel the increase in hp but the real proof was I let my son drive it and he was amazed the defference it made.

    Airraid Cold Air Intake

I am very happy with the recient purchase of this product. The car seams to have a lot more pickup. The higher air flow also increased the flow of air through the exaust system giving the car a deeper sound. I like that . Well worth the money.

Very solid piece! Paired with an air raid race CAI this piece added a really nice punch of power. hardest part was getting the TPS off the old throttle body...pretty sure they used all the lock tight that day.

    I can breath!

I can breath! I can breath! This is what my car said to me as I mashed the gas pedal. I am very pleased with the CAI and the performance gains. I estimate between 50 and 75HP gain is what my 2007 GT got with the Airaid CAI, 62 mm Throttle Body, and the Race Tune and/or performance tune from Bama. What I like the best is the overall performance gains where the car just accelerates so much better and for much longer. With the stock setup, there always seemed to be a plateau starting around 4500 rpm. Now it pulls strong all the way through 6500 RPM. MPG would actually be better if I could keep the foot out of it. I love it and I will never change, with the exception of Forced induction. The clamp that attaches the tube to the throttle body was difficult to install though. It could have been about 1" longer to aid the installation.

    Great product!

Easy install! great material and craftsmanship, read the instructions, they send new screws for the MAS, I reused the old ones and went back and swapped them out. Make sure you hide your worm gear clamps. I installed this with Pypes long tube headers, X pipe, tuner, underdrive pulleys and cut a second on 0-60 and gained 10 mph on the 1/4. So great performance gains!!
