Review & Installation Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my breakdown of BBK’s blackout and chrome cold air intake systems fitting the 5.0L Coyote motor found in all 2011 and newer Mustang GTs. Starting with the BBK blackout cold air intake which as you can see gets its name for good reason, everything on this intake has been blacked out, including the lightweight aluminum intake tube and heat shield, making for a very stealthy appearance under the hood. The only thing that isn’t black, the reusable high flow intake filter and couplers, are finished off in BBK’s signature blue color. The chrome version of this intake obviously sports a bright chrome finish, and is perfect for those of you who enjoy a little more flash and bling under the hood. Just like the blacked out version, the chrome versions features a black aluminum heat shield, all the hardware necessary for install, along with the BBK signature blue high flow filter and couplers. A couple of big points with both of these intakes, for starters the blackout and chrome versions are both tune required intakes, meaning you can bolt them right up to your Coyote motor and go, without the need for an aftermarket tune, and still make more power than your factory airbox. In addition, both intakes do include an integrated MAF housing, and a bung for your interior sound tube. If you’re not familiar with what the interior sound tube is, it’s basically a bung here which connects a hose to the firewall, and pumps all that intake noise into the cabin. If you’re not a fan of this you can always use the included cap to plug it off. So that just leaves the big question, just how much power can we expect from using these intakes? Well we already got our baseline run out of the way by using our automatic 2011 GT behind me, now let’s get to work installing each one of these intakes and make a couple of runs. Installing either one of these BBK’s is a pretty straightforward task that should only take you about an hour in the driveway using basic hand tools. If you run into any problems you can always reference the manufacturer’s detailed instructions, located on this product page. So I know I said you don’t need to run a tune with these intakes from BBK, but, in the endless quest for maximum horsepower, we’re going to upload one of our custom Bama tunes to see what these intakes are really capable of on our Coyote motor. This tune’s going to do a couple of things for us, for one it’s going to optimize our spark timing, it’s going to optimize our cam timing, and it should get those air/fuel ratios right where they need to be. First we’re going to run the blackout intake from BBK, and then switch that out for the chrome version, and see what the numbers say. Our baseline run with our automatic 2011 GT gave us 336 horsepower, and 302 ft/lbs of torque. With our BBK/Bama combination, we put down 366 horsepower and 338 ft/lbs of torque, making for a peak gain of 30 horsepower over our baseline numbers, and gains of 37 horsepower and 58 ft/lbs of torque throughout the curve. Both of these intakes from BBK are a great option for the Mustang owner that is looking for a simple bolt on mod that will net you some decent gains without a tune and look great under the hood while doing so, and as always you can check them both out right here at AmericanMuscle.com

Custom Bama Tunes specific to your vehicle. When you order a tuner, you aren't just getting a tuner - you are getting the tuner and 2 dyno-tested custom Bama tunes:

  • Performance V2 (87-93 Octane) - The Performance Tune offers a seamless blend of power, performance and drive-ability. Improving the overall driving experience of your Mustang, the Bama Performance Tune improves vehicle acceleration, increases power throughout the entire RPM and improves throttle response with revised timing, fuel, and TiVCT maps. Automatic equipped vehicles offer an aggressive shifting map to provide more aggressive transmission settings. This tune is suggested for the aggressive daily driver that is looking for more "get up and go".

  • Race V2 (91-93 Octane, E85, Race Fuel) - The Race Tune is designed for maximum performance and ensures the largest increase in vehicle performance. Using the highest grade of fuel available in your area is mandatory as timing, TiVCT, fuel, and throttle response settings are very aggressive. Automatic transmission settings implement entirely new shift points, torque converter changes and firmness settings designed for Track use.

Nitrous (91, 93, E85, Race Fuel) - Our nitrous option can be added to any of our previously mentioned tune options, but only for 91, 93, E85, or Race Fuel.

Technical Note About Fuel. Use of E85 will require larger fuel injectors such as Injector Dynamics ID1300 or Ford Racing 47lb/hr Injectors. Unleaded race fuel can also be used, but Stoichiometric points must be supplied.

Easy to load; easy to restore. Not only are the custom tunes easy to load on your vehicle, it is just as easy to restore your factory settings. When you load your custom tune on the vehicle, the tuner automatically stores your vehicle's factory settings. To return the vehicle to its factory settings, just plug the tuner back in, select the option to restore the factory settings, and you're done.

If i buy another mustang will i need pay for another set of tunes even if i have free tunes for life.

Thomas56

  • The Free Tunes for Life Program is valid for the life of the Mustang you initially get tunes for. Therefore, if you were to get a different Mustang, you could use the same tuner but you would have to buy back into the Free Tunes for Life Program for a one-time fee of $150. Keep in mind, if you have two Mustangs and want tunes for each one at the same time, you would need two separate tuners. Don't hesitate to contact our Bama team with any additional inquiries!

    BBK Blackout CAI

It's worth the money, and looks great! Great throttle response out of the product, it does the job with ease. Took me about thirty minutes to install, just hand tools, and you're done in no time. I hope that other people will buy this product, I for one absolutely enjoy mine. Be very careful on instructions to this guide, they are not the simplest and well minded instructions given.

    Significant Improvement

I purchased along with the BB 90mm Throttle Body. Let me tell you, this is the best combo. When I was finished installing (which was very simple) I tuned and took for a ride around the block. Holy god....it threw me back into my seat. I was extremely impressed and satisfied. The only issue is that with the CAI and the throttle body installed, it is a tight fit, but nothing major. My car sounds louder and has a definite improvement in HP and TQ. I would recommend this product to anyone.

    Best Bolt-On

This is the best bolt-on peformance part I have purchased so far. All parts fit perfectly. The performance increase is instantly noticable. My exhaust note got deeper and I noticed my low rev power has increased. Throttle response has increased. especially off the line. I chose the BBK Blackout because after looking at other CAIs the BBK gave the best HP Gains. The all black body looks especially good under the hood.

Review from BBK Blackout CAI and Bama Tuner (11-14 GT)

    Easy power upgrade!

I couldn't wait to get this combo for my 2011 GTCS! Delivery took about a week, however it took me a day to send the needed info for the BAMA Tuner and I live on a remote Army Post in the middle of nowhere so it came fairly fast. The CAI was easy to install, so easy that I had my 10 year old do most of the work! The only problem I had was with the sound tube connection, it took me awhile to get the stock clamp secured onto the BBK outlet (my fault#. The tuner was easy to program and of course I'm using the 91 race tune. Now unfortunately Im fresh off a leg surgery so my wife did the driving. The stang has a nice low throaty growl in idle and comes to life. We easily took it up to 115mph in 5th #still had some pull in her#. My wife noticed we were able to go from 500-1000 more RPM before shifts and was surprised how much faster we were getting to speeds. We drove at least 62 miles #in adherence to the posted speed limits#. I would say there is a very noticeable increase in torque and HP, however I won’t “guestamate” and will have to get a dyno done. GET THIS COMBO #although I got the chrome BBK CAI, it looks so good)! Vid to follow later.

Review from BBK Black Out Cold Air Intake (11-14 GT)

    2011 GT installation

Well designed, but a few minor issues when installing. Took me about an hour and a half. First off, the BBK instructions were fine, but the photos included SUCKED!! One would think that anyone making this kind of profit could include color photos that you could actually see instead of B&W photos that were so dark as to be unusable. Removing the air horn requires that you also push up on the tab at the bottom to release it. Also, removing the MAF sensor really requires a Torx bit although I did manage to use an allen wrench. The rest of the removal was a snap. Installation was only a problem when trying to reinstall the clamp for the air tube. There is just no room to get a tool into position and squeeze the factory clamp and push the hose back on. BBK should supply a new screw type hose clamp. I ended up using a 1/4 inch wide hose clamp instead of factory.

    Very pleased with my purchase.

I am very pleased with my purchase, the only reason I marked this product down in one area was because of the pictures. They are in black and white on the instructions and not very clear at all. You'll spend a few moments trying to figure out what they are referring to but if you have some mechanical ability you'll be fine.

Installed this in the morning with basic hand tools. Only complaint is bbk had to have has issues with the lower hose that connects to the CAI. Why not make a bracket or something to make the install easier but besides that very nice. Went with the blackout because my 2013 is completely black. Looks good!

I can really tell the difference

When I first ordered this they sent me the wrong CAI. But I called them and they fixed it and sent me the right one 2 days later. After the easy install and the tune, I set it to race tune and took my 2012 5.0 GT for a spin and WOW!!! I could really tell the difference. It has a lot more pull in 2nd and 3rd gear and the car sounds a lot louder. You can hear this intake just suck in air its awesome. I would recommend this product

    Looks good and fits well

I bought the BBK intake for my 2013 Mustang GT. I bought it because I have had BBK products on previous Mustangs and they do work well. I was able to install in about 50 minutes the instructions where well written but the pictures where too dark to see anything. I do not like the fact the heat deflector box/shield was made of metal. It does fit and look good. My car did seem to have a little bit more throttle response.

    Outstanding Performance from this kit!!

Not long after I purchased my 13 Mustang GT I "had to have" the Ford Power Pack installed. But it wasn't too long afterwards that this simply was not enough power to suite me, so I went with the BBK Chrome CAI, Bama X4 Tuner, and the BBK 90mm throttle body. While I was at it, I purchased the "Tunes for Life" from Bama and installed their 93 octane race tune. I made the mistake of returning the Ford tuner back to Ford because I left my stock tune in it. As most of you know by now, you need to have the stock tune installed in the ECM before you can down load a performance tune. I had to pay the dealership $100 for a new stock tune but I have zero complaints. The car has outstanding power and I've since then added BBK ceramic long tube headers and LTH resonator delete over-axel pipes. Also added Bama's new Ghost tune a few days ago. The car sounds and performs like a MONSTER. It all started with the BBK CAI. If there is a "Step 1" the CAI is the start, followed closely behind by a performance tune, then larger throttle body. BBK has solid products and I am very pleased with the craftsmanship and overall performance.

Review from BBK Black Out Cold Air Intake (11-14 GT)

    Very impressed !

I have to say I'm very impressed with BBK all together, I have their long tube headers and off road X pipe on my 2013 GT. And I decided it was time for a CAI now I wasn't just going to order the BBK black out CAI with out weighing my options with other CAI first. But when it came down to it after reading reviews and seeing the potential HP gain I could get with this CAI with or with out a tune I was sold. And just to top it off I went ahead and completed my BBK line up with a 90MM Throttle body. Absolutely no loss of power in lower RPMs. My throttle is more responsive, and between 2-5 RPMs I can hear a nice whistle, complements of my CAI delivering that cold air to my engine. Honestly it's like driving a new car. Installed both parts in 30 mins. Fits like a glove. Would highly recommend.

Review from BBK Black Out Cold Air Intake (11-14 GT)

    Good deal for the money

When I started modding my 2013, the first thing I noticed was the performance parts were far to expensive given the number of manufacturers making them. That being said, I looked at all of them prior to purchase. I read review after review and pages and pages on forums. At the end of the day, I don't see the benefit of paying more money for a different name brand when they all achieve the same basic function. BBK has long been in the Mustang game and they make some good quality products and have reasonable prices. Many will try and convince you that JLT or AirRaid make better intakes, but I would challenge them to show you how any intake outperforms another when they all have to funnel down into the same size Throttle Body to enter your engine. There was little if any noticable noise increase after install. The filter box was a bit of a pain to install, and it seems as though the inputs for the PCV system and "sound tube" are a touch shorter than needed, but it works with a little effort. Overall it performs the desired function and does so at one of the lowest prices.

    Intake looks good

Bought the BBK Black Out CAI to go along with all of my other mods (LT headers, new catback system, Boss intake, short throw shifter) so not sure how much additional power I'm picking up but it looks good and was comparable in price to many of the other brand-named intakes available. I think in retrospect I should have waited for the CandL or Steeda intakes to become available but no real complaints on this one.

    Bang for your Buck

This intake was a great addition to my 13' mustang. It has a great blacked out stealthy look to it, and was fairly easy to install. When it came it was packaged nicely and flawless. Like some people mentioned the instructions to put the intake on was a bit difficult to read due to the pictures. Luckily BBK has the install video on YouTube so it was easily remedied. Overall good product gives a good look over the factory intake, better throttle response, and a really nice whistle from the induction noise.
