Installation I was going to put this on my 98 gt but was wondering if I could put my h pipe with cats on when have in spection came . So overall question is that is there any welding needed.

justtil12

  • No welding is needed. It will be bolted at the manifold flange and clamped where the mid pile connects to the mufflers pipes

will the 96-98 gt o/r x pipe fit a cobra as well? Will the 96-98 gt off-road x pipe fit 96-98 cobras as well?

96SN95

  • No unfortunately. This BBK X-pipe is designed for the 96-98 GT, but BBK does make one specifically for the 96-98 Cobra. I've also attached a couple other options below for you. Give us a call with any further questions!

Question Resolved

I am about to purchase this mod for my Mustang, and I am curious as to what the MIL eliminators are and how to get them so I can keep the CEL off

TommyTheSchmidt

  • The Plug-in MIL Eliminators (96-04 All), item # 56045, (http://www.americanmuscle.com/stmilel.html) simply eliminate the check engine light when you install Off-Road Mid Pipes or some Mid Pipes with ultra high-flow cats. They will plug into the oxygen sensor and wire loom to block the codes generated by the rear O2 sensor.

Question Resolved

I am aware I can run the x pipe without cats, if I wanted to run it wit Cats how many am I going to need? My stock h pipe comes equipped with over 2 cats. does each cat need to be replaced or can I just run two cats on the x pipe?

chris

  • If you are keeping the cats deleted, even though you have two other cats, it would still be important to get some MIL eliminators, or custom tune, in order to prevent the check engine light from turning on when you install the BBK Off-Road X-Pipe (96-98 GT)

Answer This Question I need this answered (0) (0)

What do I need? Do I need to have a tune or MIL eliminators to run this, or are those just to get the CEL to go off (I know the tune has other benefits)? I guess what I'm asking, is if there is any harm in running it without a tune or MIL eliminators?

Shadowrunner340

  • I think that you can run it without a tune or mil, but getting a tune is much better plus you can see the gain in power.

    LOVE THE SOUND

I purchased the BBK Off-Road X-Pipe for my 1998 Mustang Gt. I have a Flowmaster Super 44 cat-back exhaust hooked up to it, and together they sound great! The price was just right, and the overall craftsmanship of the product is fantastic!

    BBK X-Pipe

1996 GT - I purchased this BBK X-Pipe at the recommendation of the American Muscle Staff. I have to say the sound is "awesome," has that nice raspy, deep sound that we all love to hear! The fit and finish is a bit to be desired, for my car at least. The right side hanger did not attach to the stock hanger on the car, and I had to heat the bar and bend it towards to the stock hanger position. The power increase is negligibly noticed but the sound is well worth it, through the entire RPM range! Absolutely amazing!

    Great investment for your mustang.

The BBK X-pipe is definitly worth the investment. Sounds great with a low raspy tone and vastly improves airflow through the exhaust. The O2 sensors are NOT located in the factory positions but I found this to be an improvement over stock making installation of the O2 sensors much easier. All of the flanges, bends, and mounts lwere perfectly alinged making this seem like a factory direct part that installs just as easy.

this product is great if you won't to eliminate your catalytic converters , but keep in mined that you may have to take your pony to a shop for adjustment's also you will need a mil eliminators for your 02 sensor's because the engine check light will come on , as for my self , i'm adding back high flow catalytic converters . don't get me wrong i love this product , my pony sounds great and white the flowmasters i add i love the sound of real muscle , americanmuscle !!!

They say loud pipes save lives...

Bought the BBK X-pipe for my '97 GT to compliment my SLP resonators. The fit and finish I would say is fairly good. The car is way louder than when I had an h-pipe. Maybe an increase in hp, but nothing you can actually feel at the pedal. I don't know if it's the combination of my SLP resonators and x-pipe or just the x-pipe, but the car is way too raspy for my taste. At idle and lower RPMs the exhaust is loud, but not too loud. Way loud in the higher rpms though (which I like). You will get noticed with this set-up. Overall I'd say the product quality is good. If you like a raspy exhaust than I'd recommend it. If you're like me and would rather have a deeper tone, go with an off-road h-pipe.

    Great Sound!

This product is a great add on to any mustang. I had 2 problems with installation. The new spots for the O2 sensors are definitely better and easier to reach. But for some reason I had to break the brackets which held the connectors that have to connect into the O2 sensors for them to be able to reach and connect to the sensors. The other problem I had was with the exhaust tip placement. I tried to adjust the X pipe the best I could but no matter how much I tried the left tip continues to stick out about an inch or two further than the right. But all in all the X pipe sounds great and finally made my car sound like a mustang!

definitely louder but between 2.5-3k rpms it sounds like a rattling tin can. but after 3 sounds amazing. should have gone with the h-pipe.

    Best by far!

first off i got these with within two days, so am thanks to you for doing your part very well. The install took me a while, only because it took so long to get the stock pipe off. i ended up cutting two bolts and after hitting up my neighbor who races mustangs for the right tools we got the stock h pipe out of the car and after that install of the x pipe at most took 30minutes, i would for sure buy this part again, but would probably reccomend a shop do it. It can be done at home, but exhaust work is always a pain.

    SOUNDS AWESOME!

I have a 96 GT with BBK CAI, BBK 78mm Throttle Intake, Borla Cat-back, and now this BBK X-pipe, all tied together with a BAMA 87 Performance tune, and it sounds AMAZING! It's loud, but cruising on the highway isn't bad at all, I can barely here it when I'm on cruise control. But, when you step on it (which I can't stop doing), it SCREAMS. Going from an H-pipe with 6 cats to an X-pipe with none, I can feel a minimal loss in low end torque, but the the high end horsepower gain is sooooo worth it. My dad has a Z06 corvette with long tube headers, o/r x-pipe, and borlas, and my car now sounds just like his! My bolts were rusted so I couldn't break them loose myself. Shop installed it for $60.
