Description
Prop Rod? Are you still using that old style factory prop rod that Ford installed in your S197 Mustang? Well then join the new millennium with a set of Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts from AmericanMuscle for clean modern looks and convenience. Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that old ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but also holds it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they have a black powercoated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 2005 to 2009 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, GT, Bullitt, and Shelby models. The Kit includes two black gas powered struts, mounting brackets, and all the required mounting hardware.

Hood Struts

Once installed, the struts work awesome. Fit of bottom brackets leave much to be desired, poorly engineered bracket.

I am an engineer by trade, so you are in for it now :) First, packaging: The kit arrived in an oversized box with no internal packaging, bubble wrap or peanuts. So my parts were banging against each other since the box was sealed. Luckily the black coating is very durable - otherwise they would have gotten pretty beat up during shipping. As others have said, the bolt holes in the lower mounts do not match up exactly with the lower fender bolt holes. But a couple of minutes with a round file took care of it. I restore muscle cars for fun, so I am used to aftermarket restoration parts needing slight modifications, not a big deal. But you would think all this feedback would have resulted in a fix by now... The instructions say that you need a small flat screwdriver, but you also will need it to "relax" the metal bands that hold the struts on the mounting studs to attach the struts (not mentioned). Picky owners are going to want to have some touch up paint handy because you are going to mar the hood bolt heads. Otherwise the kit fits well and works great. The fact that it bolts on without drilling is a huge plus. I'm pretty happy with it.

    bolt on hood struts

    December 19, 2011

The struts worked great, once the bracket holes were slotted and modified to fit. I would expect a bolt on to go much easier.

    Great Item!

    January 09, 2011

I bought these since they are a nice black color without any stickers, decals, or brand names on them. Work great! Pretty easy to install.

    Hood struts

    January 27, 2012

My only complaint is that the bottom brackets do not fit properly. I found that if you elongate the mounting holes you can achieve the proper fit, which is something you should not have to do with a product that states "no drilling required". I will admit that the overall appearance under the hood without the prop is much better. That is why I gave this product a fair rating instead of a poor one.

    Very Easy

    February 19, 2011

No instructions, but you can figure it out. Took about 20 minutes. They look stock and are much better than a prop rod!

41180 MMD Bolt on Hood Strut Kit

    April 21, 2012

The worst parts of this product are the lower brackets. Need to be 0.30" wider & bolt hole slotted. Bracket does NOT seat properly on structure.Very poor design/build in what could be an excellent product. Almost all the reviews address this yet nothing seems to be done about it. 30 minute install time.15 if you have power tools. At this price I would expect better quality. Sup-prized American Muscle hasn't had the manufacture fix this or just quit selling it. Nice to get rid of hood prop.

    Lose the Hood Prop Rod

    February 03, 2012

The gas struts are easy to install (took twenty minutes) and have the look of an OEM system. However, when working alone, be especially careful when loosening the hood mount bolt, closest to the firewall, for the upper strut bracket. That loose bolt is the only thing holding the hood to its hinge. Now, when I open the hood, I no longer have to hold it with one hand while holding the prop in the other. Also, I no longer have to look for that little slot underneath the hood, which is especially difficult in low-light situations.

Good Idea bad lower bracket design

    January 02, 2012

Installs easily but lower bracket mounting holes do not line up with mounting holes on car. Instructions are not clear on how brackets should be mounted. Yes marked with PL and DL but can be mounted on either side of car and holes still do not line up either way. Most images on American muscle have the bracket installed incorrectly and make the hood bow if installed like that from my understanding. Design of lower bracket needs to be redesigned to line up mounting holes correctly. The ends on the strut (plastic ball socket) are weak, I cracked it just by pushing it on to the ball bracket.

    Hood strut

    May 14, 2011

Pretty easy install even for one person. Makes the hood go up a little further and looks nice and clean. Only thing i didnt like was it made my hood stick up alittle further than the fenders but i have a aftermarket hood.
