Hurst short throw Will this work with the Hurst Short throw that came standard on my 2008 Shelby GT?

  • My best guess would be yes. Many people have aftermarket short throw shifters and never have to change the shift boot. Personally, I have had 3-aftermarket Short throw shifters including a Hurst in previous Mustangs. I never had any issues with the factory shift boot.

    Know what you are buying...

Usually I'm very thorough when purchasing something online, i.e. reading the full description and looking at any available pictures. I failed to do that full this time. I think. I'm not exactly sure if the last 2 pics showing the actual boot were added after my purchase or not. I don't remember seeing them, but I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt that I overlooked them. To be clear, what you are purchasing is ONLY the leather portion of the shift boot. It is not attached to a plastic frame like the one installed in your vehicle. Installation requires you to remove your old boot from the plastic frame and attach the new boot to it. I was definitely disappointed when I opened the box. I didn't really feel like doing it myself, so I took it to an upholstery place to have it done ($35). My choice, so not complaining about the extra cost. The top of the boot didn't fit the grommet for my Hurst short throw shifter and they needed to cut a few stitches, insert it, and stitch it back up. The attachment to the plastic frame, if you want to do it right the first time, will require some working of the leather as well as glue to properly attach it, especially at the corners. Overall, it looks really good now that it is installed. I just wish that the description had been a little more detailed. The upholstery place that I went to said it took a little over an hour to do. Plan on at least that amount of time to mount it, and then let the glue cure overnight before you install it.

End Result Looks Good, But Install Takes Time

I bought this product because I wanted to add a leather shift boot with silver stitching to match my gray interior. I'm very happy with the results.Without any instructions available, I wasn't sure how it would go. Upon taking out the original shift boot, I found that it was glued to the plastic frame it uses to snap in place. I was able to remove the old boot with a razor blade. I removed the residual glue with GooGone. The new boot is quite a bit thicker. It comes with the slits that go around the existing "hooks" were a bit too small, but I widened them with the razor blade. I installed the new boot on all of the hooks. The corners were a bit hard to remain flat and not interfere with installing the frame back into the car. I glued the ends and clamped them flat. There's a rubber doughnut at the small end of that boot where the shifter shaft goes through. That gets reused. Since the new boot is thicker, I needed to get a thinner O-ring to retain it. I'm happy with the way it looks installed. Just take your time and don't be in a hurry.

    Class up the joint.

This shift boot adds a quality look and feel to the interior of your Mustang. Replaces the cheap stock vinyl boot with a thicker and softer leather boot. Takes a little bit of modification (some trimming) to fit properly but not that big of a deal.
