Review & Install Video

Hey, guys. Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com here with my review of the C&L Street Cold Air Intake, available for the 2015 and up Mustang GT. The C&L Street Cold Air Intake is going to be for the S550 GT owners out there who are looking for a closed element cold air intake that also keeps the direct cold air feed that Ford has created from factory. But that doesn't necessarily require a computer re-tune. A cold air intake is normally one of the first mods that many Mustang owners go to. But a lot of times the question of "Is a tune required?" has an impact on the intake that is chosen. And the C&L right here is an option that brings other benefits besides just performance gains to the table, but without requiring a tune. But speaking of gains, let's break the numbers down first before getting into the intake. We already ran a baseline run and got some numbers in the book. So we're going to run the car again with the C&L installed. Now we did pair a 93 octane tune with the intake, even though this intake does not require a tune. But we wanted to see the full potential that the intake has, and here's what we found. Our baseline run with our 2015 GT gave us numbers of 387 horsepower and 365 foot pounds of torque at the rear wheels. With the C&L in tune installed those numbers changed to 412 horsepower and 387 foot pounds of torque, making for a peak gain of 25 horsepower over those baseline numbers. Our gains throughout the curve showed as much as 34 horsepower and 33 foot pounds of torque right in that 4,000 to 5,500 RPM range. These are the gains that you're actually going to notice when you're driving, especially in this RPM range. Now since we did pair this with a tune, keep in mind that a lot of the gains that you're seeing will be attributed to that tune. If we take a closer look at the C&L, it's first off by popular intake on the site, and one that's going to come in at the top of the line in-regards to price at right around $400. But also in quality and fitment as well. And all of C&L's products are built and tested in the USA, which is just something that I like to point out. But looking at the specifics here, this does include a reusable filter that you can easily wash and re-oil when it gets a little dirty. And it's not the biggest filter that I've seen for an aftermarket S550 cold air intake. But it's not the smallest either. One of the big things that I wanted to point out with this intake though is the housing here. First of all, it's enclosed, which you're only going to see from other options like Airaid and JLT right now. It has a plexiglass lid that's removable, so you can get to your filter easily, or see without having to take the air-box apart. The other cool thing about the housing is that it taps into the cold air duct, which brings cool air in from the grill instead of using warm engine compartment air. And like I mentioned earlier, this particular intake does not require a tune. But the small gains and drive-ability that you'll see from the intake alone can be greatly amplified by running a tune, just as a side note. As for the install, it's nothing too difficult, and the intake will come with all of the items that you'll need, including your clamps and your hardware. All you really need to complete the install is a few sockets and a Flathead for the plastic pins. This is probably one of the easier mods that you can tackle with your new Mustang and will probably take about a half hour to an hour tops. And I'm going to call this a one out of three wrenches on our scale. Wrapping things up here, I think the C&L Street Intake is a well built intake that works with an enclosed air-box and taps into that cold air duct that Ford has provided for the intake. It fits well and has a decent sized reusable filter, and it does not require a tune. You can check this intake out more online for yourself, and for all things Mustang keep it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Maximum Airflow For More Power. Improve the horsepower, torque and fuel efficiency of your coyote powered S550 GT Mustang by replacing the restrictive factory air box and paper filter element with a C&L Performance high flow intake tube and filter assembly to increase air flow. C&L intakes are dyno tuned and tested for maximum performance and efficiency.

No Tune Required. This C&L Performance Street Cold Air Intake is designed to improve the performance of your 5.0L V8 coyote powered Pony without the need of reprogramming your Mustang computer. By utilizing state of the art computer-aided designs this C&L Intake will increase power using the factory tune.

Rechargeable High Flow Filter. Included with your C&L Cold Air Kit is a high-flow, reusable, rechargeable filter. That means no more spending money on OEM paper filters that waste money and horsepower. Just clean your C&L filter, re-oil it, and put it back on to save money and enjoy better performance in one shot.

Easy Installation. C&L Cold Air Intake kits are designed to install with just basic hand tools. No extra modifications or special tools are required for an easy 1 hour installation. All parts and instructions are included.

Recommended Upgrade. Even though a re-tune is not required for operation, AmericanMuscle recommends a custom tune with a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) to get the best possible performance out of this cold air intake.

Application. This C&L Performance Street Cold Air Intake System is specifically designed for use on 2015-2017 GT Mustangs equipped with the DOHC 4-valve 5.0L Coyote V8 engine.

Technical Note. This C&L Performance Cold Air Intake is not legal for use in California or other states adopting California emission standards.

There are HP and TQ gains given WITH the tune but wha tare the HP and TQ gains with this intake if I don't do a tune?

ghost93

  • You will still see gains in both horsepower and torque if you do not use a tune, but it will be a significant amount less. The amount you can gain with or without the tune will differ depending on what other modifications you have done to the car.

Item #388986 Where can I buy a replacement oiled filter element to fit this CAI ?

GaryS

If I only put the C L CAI on the car (ie no tune, no other motor modifications) what sort of power and torque gains are achievable? For instance, you indicate for the Airaid CAI without tune delivers gains of 28hp - would the C L be more, less or the same?

Getting ready for another round of mods to my 2015 GT. Adding a BBK 85mm TB and hoping to remove the insert in my C L Street CAI. I will re-tune the car once mods are complete, but want to ensure that the CAI will operate properly. Any help you all can provide is appreciated.

  • Hello! As long as you have your car re-tuned, the C&L Street Cold Air Intake should function properly.

Will installing the intake void my car factory warranty? If I take it to the shop can they tell I had one installed?

Andy

  • Each warranty will be different by the dealer. You will need to contact your dealer to see if this would void their warranty. This part is designed differently than the stock air box that Ford uses factory so it will be noticeable as well.

Make sure you get the correct tune

Took about an hour and a half to put in. The most difficult part was getting the air tube connected to the throttle body and air box, tight fit on the gaskets. Heat them up with a hair dryer to make them more pliable. Keeps water from dripping through the hot air exhaust onto your element. Got the X4 tuner combo but the tune they sent was for the restrictor sleeve which throws the MAF out of whack. A quick call and email an hour later and I had the correct tune. Noticeable increase in HP and torque in the 3-5K RPM range.

Was a fairly easy install, took a couple hours from start to end. First thing I noticed after install is the instant increase in throttle response! It drives much more aggressively now and I love it! Also looks much better then any other intake in my opinion (and others at different meets due to the amount of people asking about this beautiful product!). Haven't been able to get the tune yet, so I'm still running with the space filler, but am looking forward to when I can take this thing and push it to the limit!

    Nice product

I got this along with headers and a tune. So honestly I can't tell if it has done a lot. But I can definitely hear the air moving at full throttle. Plus it looks way better under the hood.

    Great CAI!

Im really satisfied with the purchase. Materials look and feel of great quality. At the moment Im not ready for a tune and I decided to go with CandL since it can be used with or without a tune using the included restrictor. The one problem I had was that the restrictor slot for the Mass AF sensor was cut a bit to short and I had to cut just a little bit more for it to fit perfectly. The kit includes a sound tube delete kit if you want to go in that direction. You can really hear the engine breathing now and I love the sound. I also installed a CandL TB spacer and it makes the install just a little bit harder since it takes almost an inch from the require space. Im sure that I will feel a difference once paired with a BAMA tune in the future. But for now, Im really happy with the purchase.

    C L Intake

Great product! Install was very simple and straight forward and they give you all the hardware you need! Only took an hour for install and I'm no mechanic. Looks really nice in the engine bay as well. I noticed a little improved throttle response, but I'm sure the gains will be seen more once I get a tuner! Would reccomend this product to anyone looking for a quality cold air intake!

    Worth every penny!

Very easy to install, just be ready to spend a little bit more time on installation if you are getting rid of the sound tube. It took me a while to detach the tube from the firewall and cap the hole.
