I bought an '01 GT convertible for my first car and the convertible top doesn't go down unless I put it down by hand. The button for the convertible does absolutely nothing when I press it and I'm wondering if this could possibly be an electrical issue or if replacing the cylinders would fix this problem. When I first got the car, the convertible top button sort of worked, but after putting it up and down a couple of times, I noticed that the problem got worse and worse until it just stopped working. Thank you

Joe

  • Your problem could be due to the lift cylinder or the actual convertible top motor. When you press the button and you do not hear anything and nothing happens it may be the convertible top motor. However you will want a shop to look at this to see exactly the problem you are having.

Would this OPR convertible top hydraulic lift cylinder fit my 1996 mustang-GT?

mustanglady

  • This will not as the cylinder is thinner and longer than the one that is used on the 1994-1998 Mustangs. We have the correct one available under item #101814 found here (http://www.americanmuscle.com/convert-top-cylinder-9498.html).

My top rises what, to me, seems very slow. It takes maybe 30 seconds or so. Is this actually slow? Will replacing the hydraulics speed this up at all or is this the normal speed for a convertible top to raise?

  • It does take a few seconds for the top to rise and fall. Though, the cylinders do wear out after time. It would be a good idea to get a new pair after a while.

I was looking at the install guide to see if this looked easy enough for my husband to do at home, and first thing it says is to lower the top. Unfortunately the top is stuck up on my Mustang. Is it possible to do this repair with the top up and it will be just super inconvenient or is it absolutely vital to have the top down to get these replaced? Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, one of my hydraulic lifts is leaking very badly. I was wondering if I needed to replace that one only or buy 2?

  • Depending on how old both the cylinders are, it may be a good idea to get two new ones. If they were bought around the same time, then they both might need to be replaced soon.

    AshleyK

I bought the car used, thought filling the motor was my fix but noticed one side was sluggish. Turns out that the old cylinder piston was bent and disconnected from the top. There is no torx bolt to be found. I want to order this but am guessing it doesn't come with any bolts. Where can I source this bolt?

  • Unfortunately, the Convertible Top Hydraulic Lift Cylinder (99-04 All) does not come with any hardware. I suggest calling your local Ford Dealership or asking a shop. This way you get the correct hardware for the install.

    Short-lived product

Bought and installed this part in August of 2016. In late October I put my car into winter storage and at the time everything was working fine. I took my car out of storage today (February 18, 2017) and found out that the cylinder has failed. I can't even find any info on the company through Google (no warranty info, not even any contact info). AM support was not helpful at all. They didn't even have the contact info for the vendor that sells this product. I'll be getting a replacement from a salvage yard soon, like I probably should have done in the first place.

    Perfect fit

Easy to install. Fit perfectly like the original factory cylinders. Work smooth and evenly. I give them four stars after 2 weeks of being in the car. Will bump that up to 5 if they continue to operate for the next three years without leaking.

    nice

I bought these due to being advertised as brand new and being 10$ more expensive than the cheapest I was able to find. They appear and seem to be as advertised. These function flawlessly and was a direct bolt in. No thread chasing or mods necessary. I would recommend that AM stock the hoses as well. had to go to another vendor the get them :/

    Exactly as promised.

I didn't think these thngs would be so hard to find. Not even our local Ford dealership could get their hands on a pair. A friend of mine, who was restoring his 65 fastback, recommended American Muscle. The hydraulics hooked right up, plug and play. No tweaking, no muss, no fuss.

mustang convertible soft top hydraulic lift

FANTASTIC! Exact fit, easy to install. The soft top has never worked better. Hydraulic fluid inexpensive and easy to place . This is my kids 2000 mustang which they LOVE- the dealership wanted $1200 to fix the problem. We found what we were looking for at American Muscle at a reasonable price of $200 The instructions were precise in so much that we were able to replace both lifts in less time than we expected. We are NOT mechanically inclined. Very thankful we found this site- fast shipping great product!

    Great shopping experience.

Fast shipping. Fairly easy replacement install. In my opinion, the lift cylinders are inflated in price, but still the cheapest I'd found on the Internet. (The dollar doesn't go far anymore in this volatile economy). I'm glad to be able to use the convertible again. The only small negative regarding the replacement product is the lift cylinders work too well; that is, they lift the top, and slap it down hard on the frame. Have to release the button just before the top gets to the frame, and then slowly lower the last couple of inches. I'm still pleased overall. Thank you, AM.

    easy install!

Well there's really not to much to say, The speed of delivery was great and the actual installation is pretty straight forward with no real surprises. One suggestion that I will make is when it comes to filling the fluid chamber I found that using one of the squeeze type oiler cans with the flexible tip really made the filling easy and not all that messy! I will try to ad pictures later on if possible. Good Luck and Merry Christmas!!!

    Do it yourself...

I did not call the dealer to get a price on replacing these cylinders, but I am sure it would have been ridiculously expensive. If you have enough mechanical ability to feel comfortable doing it yourself then I would advise you that these cylinders worked out great for me. The job was made a little more challenging for me as I had installed a styling bar previously on this car and this had to come off to replace the cylinders. The styling bar was a more challenging install, but that is another story. FYI, I found plenty of videos on YouTube on how to access and re-fill the hydraulic pump reservoir that powers these cylinders as well as one demonstrating how to prop up the convertible top while replacing the cylinders. Just one note I would share about these cylinders and that is that the fittings on the original hoses went much further into these cylinders than the original cylinders. So much so that I was concerned if they were tight enough, however it have been several months now and everything worked out great. Once I filled the power unit with oil and started cycling the top up and down the air was soon bled out and the top now goes up and down very smoothly. BTW, I only had one cylinder leaking (I found red oil on my garage floor coming out just in front of the driver's side rear wheel), but I would strongly recommend replacing both cylinders at the same time.

    Convertible hydraulic cylinders

Replaced both cylinders last weekend. These fit perfectly. Up and down about 20 times now with no problems. Too early to say how they'll last but I have no reason to suspect anything but a quality product.

    Problem solved

I just bought my 2003 GT a couple of months ago basically because it's a badass convertible looks great with the top down. So when the top stopped working I was bummed. I replaced both hydraulic cylinders and now it works better than ever.

    Convert. top cyl.

Part did what it was suppose to do, however I had to chase(clean) the threads in the lower end of the cylinder in order to use it. It appeared that the cylinder had been dropped and flattened the "fitting" area of the cylinder. I saved the old cylinder they Can be rebuilt, which I have had done!

Should have been easy! Part was fine.

The part was great. No leaks. What should have been a few minutes to swap it out took hours because the factory bolts were glued in with some sort of heavy duty thread lock. I ended up having to grind out the old hydraulic ram. Luckily there was enough room to work and I could replace with a decent bolt! It was a lot harder than I wanted it to be!! > seems like that is generally the case with mechanic work!
