Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hi I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, here with a way to keep your Coyote motor clean, and sludge free, thanks to these JLT oil separators available in a black, or satin finish for all 2011 and newer Mustang GTs. So what do these do? Well, just about every internal combustion engine has what’s called PCV, or Positive Crank Case Ventilation. Basically what this does, is allows the oily vapors and gases that are produced during combustion, to escape the block or crank case in a controlled manner. A lot of times these oils and gases are routed through a PCV valve or a breather tube, back into the intake track to eventually be burned off by your engine. The only problem with this is these vapors can eventually dirty up the intake manifold over time and in some very extreme cases can cause damage, or lower your octane rating by diluting your fuel. This becomes even more of an issue on supercharged or turbocharged cars, where crank case pressures are increased, causing even more of this oily by product to occur. That’s where these oil separators from JLT come into play, these mount in line with your Mustang’s PCV system to catch any excess oil vapors or sludge. As a matter of fact, we did install one of these on our 2011 GT here a little while back, and since then we’ve been doing some spirited driving, and a few Dyno pulls, probably totaling 50-60 miles. Let’s take a look inside and see what we’ve collected. Alright, well there you go, that would have otherwise ended up back into our intake manifold. Taking a closer look at the kit, you’ll notice it’s actually pretty simple. JLT uses a 2 ounce, Billet aluminum collector, that’s available in your choice or either a satin silver, or a black finish, They also include these two preinstalled factory hoses, making this a completely easy plug and play install that should take you no more than 30 minutes. All you need to do is remove your factory tube connected your valve to the intake manifold, and plug the new JLT setup in its place. You will notice there are two PCV hoses on your Coyote motor, one on the passenger side and one on the driver side, does this mean you need to run two oil separators? Well, JLT claims that 80% of the oil and sludge on the Coyote motor comes from one side. Of course running one for each side would be the best option, especially if you’re running a boosted setup, but that’s for you to decide. So if you want to invest in a product that will help keep your Coyote motor free from sludge, then going with a product like this JLT oil separator would be a great place to start.

Reduce Sludge. In your Mustang's engine, crankcase exhaust is re-circulated back through your PCV system and intake, taking with it large amounts of oil vapors. This JLT Oil Separator kit installs in your PCV line to filter out oil before it can get into your engine's intake - where it doesn't belong - and cause damage.

Premium Quality Kit. This high quality kit includes the JLT Oil Separator, which features billet aluminum construction with a black anodized finish for superior style and durability. The 2 oz. tank base is easily removed for draining during oil changes, and is designed with a o-ring for a leak-free seal. Plus, JLT added a Ford Motorcraft metal mesh PCV pre-filter to prevent any oil from getting back into your intake.

Easy Installation. This complete kit includes a factory PCV line that has already been modified with the necessary fittings and attached to the separator for a true plug-and-play installation.

Application. This JLT Passenger Side Oil Separator kit is for use on the 2011 to 2017 V6 Mustangs. Designed for direct installation on the passengers side only.

How often do you have to empty out the separator if you're driving less than 10,000 miles a year? I'm running 93 octane, in the 3.7L 2015 Mustang. I'm assuming this does not impact the warranty of the vehicle, correct? Do you request the tech to also change the separator reservoir as well or are you expected to do it yourself? Thanks for the info!

  • The JLT Black Oil Separator - Passenger Side (11-17 V6) will need to be checked frequently to empty out the oil that builds up. As far as the warranty this should not impact the warranty however each warranty will be different based on the dealer offering the warranty. The reservoir is something that anybody will be able to change as it will screw off and on.

Is there a difference between an "Oil separator" and an "Oil catch can"? Is one just more catchy than the other?

  • No difference. An oil separator and an oil catch can are the same thing.

It looked like in the video there were two of these on the GT. Does the V6 require two also?

  • Only one on a V6

    Oil separator

I've put the JLT oil separator on when I hit 55k miles on my '13 stang. I wound up taking a road trip soon after installing it (about 600 miles in 3 days) and I decided to check the catch can when I made it home. As expected, a small amount of oil was sitting in the can, I couldn't believe this was getting cycled back into my car for the first 55k miles!

    Easy install.

Took less than 1 minute to install. Only gave 4 out of 5 due to it not having any means of support other than the hoses. I think a bracket will help. Nice product. Looks like quality.

    Good Deal!

I truly like the JLT oil separator I received. On my V-6, I found the output line to be app. 3" too long to mount without crimping the hose. I cut the connector off the end, shortened the line, and heated it with a propane torch JUST ENOUGH to warm it and re-installed the connector. Now it fits fine and even looks good. Thanks JLT.

    Excellent product

The item was very very easy to install. It took all of 30 seconds to unplug the old PCV pipe and install the oil separator. After I installed it I took it on a very spirited road trip to the beach and when I got back there was oil in the can! I highly recommend this product to ensure that your engine continues to run smooth and clean!

    Well thought out package

I was tempted to just buy a breather or a catch can and save some money, but decided to go this route to see what all the fuss was about. The main benefit of this is that it is so freaking easy to install. Literally 10 second install, fits well, nicely thought out with the connections and hoses. My only gripe is that it was such a quick install, it left me with a longing to install more parts so I could feel like I did something!

    Great fit

1 minute install. This is how all products should fit and install.Great when you get a well thought out product and everything fits and works like you would expect it should.Nothing works than getting a product that does not fit correctly. JTL made this oil separator a joy to own and install. Can't say that for all after market items for my ford mustang. If you are looking for a oil separator you won't be disapointed with this JLT product. Super Easy Install

I'm a girl and it took me less than 30 seconds to figure out how to put this thing on. It looks good and the connections feel secure and like factory. A bit steep in price, I really dont think its worth $100+ but whatever, it does what its supposed to do. Took one star off for cost. If you're handy, you could make one yourself pretty easily.

Cool little 100 dollar peace of mind

Install took all of fifteen seconds. Drove about 300 miles and already had nice little pool of oil in the can. Definitely worth the peace of mind knowing my Pony will live longer, and lose less power over the years. I highly reccomend this product to anyone who intends to keep thier Pony or get a better trade in value for their next car.

    Great product!! Great quality!!

Install the separator on my 2012 v6 because the car would burn oil slightly at high rpm. To the point were a burnt oil smell was noticeable from inside the car after every hard pull or WOT run. Ford wasn't trying to fix this since it didn't go threw 1qt every 1000 miles. This product does EXACLY what it says and installs in less than 1 min with NO tools required. It also eliminated the burnt oil smell as well. It's anodized machined billet construction and OEM type fittings/lines look great!! Highly recommend!!

JLT Oil Separator for the 2011 V6 Mustang

This product was extreamly simple to instal and seems to be constructed from very good quality material. After just a short time of using it I can see it is doing its job well and keeping the extra oil from the exhaust going into my car's intake. By adding this oil separator I should see lasting performance and wear in my Mustang's engine. Thanks for a great product.

    Easy as pie.

I bought this after cleaning my throttlebody on my 2011 V6. I'm hoping this will prevent some of the oil/soot contamination from re-occurring. Compared to cheaper catch cans, this one has a filter element that provides a place for oil vapors to condense and be trapped. Installation was as simple as disconnecting the old quick-connect fittings and connecting the new one separator in its place.
