Hey guys, Stephanie with americanmuscle.com here with my review and Dyno test of the JLT cold air intake available for your 2012 and 2013 Boss 302. The JLT cold air is going to be for the Boss 302 owners out there or even the '11 to '14 GT owners who've installed a Boss intake manifold who are looking for a top rated quality intake that will provide some solid gains in both power and sound compared to the factory air box and will look good under the hood while doing so. I should point out that the JLT is a tune required intake, so you can't just bolt this thing up to your Boss or GT without a custom tune. I'll explain why in a minute. First, let's get to some Dyno numbers. We already established a baseline run earlier today using the '13 Boss behind me. We then went to work installing the JLT along with a custom tune as required, reran the car, and here are those numbers. Our baseline run with our 2013 Boss gave us numbers of 387 horsepower and 333 foot-pounds of torque at the rear wheels. With the JLT intake and the 93 octane VMP tune the car made 398 horsepower and 337 foot-pounds of torque, making for a peak gain of 11 horsepower and 4 foot-pounds of torque. By opening up some air flow in those upper RPMs we ended up seeing 15 horsepower at 7400 RPMs and 10 foot-pounds of torque at 7000 RPMs. Keep in mind that we did pair the intake with a tune. A lot of these gains can definitely be attributed to that tune. As far as curve gains, you can see right here that there isn't a whole lot going on in the graph. The factory intake is actually really efficient. Like I said, not a ton of curve gains, but all of the gains are going to be in the upper RPMs where the stock air box starts to become restrictive. With the numbers out of the way, let's dive into the JLT. In my opinion JLT is one of the most trusted and recognizable names in the cold air market for the late model Mustang. The numerous five star reviews on the site reflect that. As I mentioned earlier, the JLT is a tune required intake. That's due to the large 107 MAF air flow housing, currently the largest available on the site for the S197 Boss intake manifold. The larger MAF housing and intake tube should allow your Boss or GT to breathe easier and will traditionally make a little more power when compared to a no tune required intake because of the larger MAF housing and intake tube. JLT keeps more of a simplistic design with this intake. The intake is all business. They don't use any flashy finishes or any gimmicks to separate their products from the others. One thing I do like about the JLT design is that they incorporate the MAF housing into the tube itself which just looks cleaner in my opinion. Some other options use a separate metal MAF housing along with a plastic tube. There's nothing wrong with that from a performance standpoint, but it just doesn't look as nice to me. In addition to the tube and MAF housing, the rest should look pretty familiar in the world of aftermarket intakes - reusable high flow S&B oiled filter, an open element style heat shield which does tap into the factory cold air duct which is a nice touch, and finally all of the hardware and couplers to wrap everything up. The JLT will obviously work with a factory throttle body without issue, but it should also work with any aftermarket 85 millimeter or 90 millimeter throttle body without an issue as well. Another nice thing to point out is that the JLT includes a foam plug to insert into the portion of your GT's hood vent to prevent water from getting into your filter. Believe me, it's something that you're going to want to use as the filter does sit right below the lower portion of the hood vent on the driver side. Thumbs up to JLT for including this. Even with these extras and the solid construction and the largest on the market MAF, the JLT is still coming in at a very reasonable price point coming in right around the $300 price mark. A brief rundown of the install. Basic hand tools here, guys, including a socket set, a few screwdrivers, a pair of pliers and a Torx tool for the MAF sensor is really all you need to remove the factory intake and get the new JLT into place. I will say assembling the intake first outside of the car will make life a little bit easier along with installing the heat shield first. This is overall basic stuff that any novice should be able to tackle with ease. All in all this is going to be a 1 out of 3 wrenches on the scale and, guys, maybe about 30 minutes to an hour depending on your experience. As far as my recap, here's what I think. The JLT is one of the top rated intakes on the site and it's easy to see why. When paired with the required custom tune option, the power improvements are going to be tough to beat given the price point.   • Street (87-93 octane) - The Street tune is designed as a daily driver program that focuses in on increasing mid-range power. It does give up a few HP at higher RPMs, but that's why there is a Performance file. Automatic vehicles are further enhanced by making adjustments to the transmission's shift points and firmness.
  • Performance (87-93 octane) - The Performance program is designed to add power at 3000 RPMs and higher, focusing more on the top end horsepower and all out performance driving. Timing, fuel and throttle response settings are slightly more aggressive than the street tune. This is a great track tune but also works well for daily drivers that are looking for a little more "get up and go" than the street tune. The automatic transmission settings are the same as in the street tune.
  • Race (91 - 93 octane) - The Race tune will ensure the largest increase in vehicle performance. Using the highest grade of fuel available in your area is mandatory. This file is designed for "Race only Use" as the timing, fuel, and throttle response settings are very aggressive. in fact, the adjustments are so aggressive, that we do not recommend it for daily driving as it may cause your vehicle to try to jump out from a stop and easily spin the tires. Finally, with the automatics, we implement entirely new shift points and firmness settings to further enhance the all-out performance of the vehicle.

Nitrous (91-unleaded race gas) - Our nitrous option can be added to any of our previously mentioned tune options, but only for 91-octane unleaded fuel.

Easy to load; easy to restore. Not only are the custom tunes easy to load on your vehicle, it is just as easy to restore your factory settings. When you load your custom tune on the vehicle, the tuner automatically stores your vehicle's factory settings. To return the vehicle to its factory settings, just plug the tuner back in, select the option to restore the factory settings, and you're done.

  • With any of the tuners we are able to turn off the CEL for deleting the cats but this can cause issues with getting through your emissions testing.

Just installed the JLT CAI on the weekend and loaded the Performance tune. I really like it so far but have a question about the Race tune before I install it. The traction control on the Mustang has saved me a couple of times, especially in the wet - does the Race tune turn off the "electronic nanny"? I actually am glad I have the nanny for day to day driving and don't want it disabled.

  • Your traction control system will still be enabled on the Race tune. We have modified the torque calculation and clutch protection logic as well as a few other changes specific to the race tune to unchain the performance of the car with racing/competition in mind. I would recommend giving it a try and then running the tune you prefer - either your Performance or Race tune.

    Bama Power Flash Tuner

    I was looking for a little extra power and the Bama tuner did exactly that. I have an auto transmission and the tunes firmed up the shifts and optimized the shift points. For the money, you can't go wrong. I run the performance 93 tune on the road since this is my daily driver and flash the race 93 tune to the ecu when at the track. All my buddies were surprised that my auto convertible with 3.15 rear end ran a 12.8 at 111mph. I still have a few tenths left to shave off! Awesome tuner.

    Good Tuner.

    Overall great product. Easy to connect and process new tunes into your vehicle. I would recommend that you always always. Make sure not electronics are being used lime radio or power anything. It will lock ur ecu up. Literally sit in ur car decide close doors make sure radio ac off all . Connect tuner and follow directions . Do not move! Haha but overall great tunerring aside from that crazy issue that it's so sensitive to voltage it needs to update ur car with new tune.

    Free tunes for life?

    Within the description on your site for this tuner, it say to contact Bama for the free tunes for life when I want to have another tune created. I did contact Bama and they told me I have to find a local dyno shop that does tuning and go there for my tune? Your site says all you have to do is contact Bama and they'll create the tune and email to me. So.....what is the process?? I am a bit disappointed that I was told to find my own shop. Are they contracted by Bama to create my new tune(s) at no cost?? I'd like someone from AM to respond and explain the process.

    Threw away $400

    First off let me say the techs who tried to help me were great. The tuner itself is fine but the Bama tunes are hit or miss and are cookie cutter tunes written on a test mule and may not work on your particular car. I went back and forth for close to four months with bama performance trying to get the tunes to work with my 2013 GT with no luck. I ended up having to go to injected engineering in kennesaw GA to get my car straighten out from the mess the bama tune did on my ecu. I ended up spending a full day of missed work and $800 on a custom dyno tune fixing what a $400 tuner caused to my car. Lots of guys claim they had good results with this tuner but I didn't and have heard a lot of others having issues as well. It may work for you but realize there's a good chance it may not and you will be stuck with a $400 paper weight like me.

    Not at all what I expected

    Got the tuner and it said to update it so I did hooked it up to the car and is didn't even have any tunes on there. I thought that was what I paid for but now I got to go through the trouble of downloading them all individually when it should have came ready to just plug and play. Disappointed

    WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

    Wow, what a difference! Finally my 2011 5.0 GT gallup's the way she was intended to! Thanks to the EPA regs Ford has to de-tune one of the best motors they've ever produced. Anyone on the fence about getting a BAMA tuner… this was money well spent. I also slipped in a KandN Air Filter. Only one minor issue. I had to find a computer that could download the update. Mine couldn't pull it off…

    It's Alive!!!!

    Completely awakens the beast! Throttle response is 10x better and a significant power increase you can feel through entire rpm band! I pared it with an airaid CAI and couldn't be happier!! Still haven't tried the race tune but I'm told most ppl use it for daily driving, and that's where the most significant power gains are at..

    Exceeded expectations

    I had been thinking about getting a tuner for quite a while, but wasn't sure if the $400 for the tuner would be worth it. A friend of mine kept telling me, "man, you've got to get a tuner". I finally decided to order the tuner with an Airaid intake tube and Airaid throttle body spacer, already had Roush CAI and Roush exhaust. I went ahead and updated the tuner when I got it, which is recommended by SCT, which was very easy to do since the tuner has built in WIFI. While the tuner updated, I installed the intake tube and throttle body spacer. Once completed, I grabbed the tuner and uploaded the performance tune with 93 octane. Started my car and noticed the throttle response just backing out of my garage. I hadn't driven my car in about a week, so I drove it and let it warm up for a few minutes before getting into it, then I hammered it and OH MY! What a difference! Throttle response, acceleration, and even the sound of the exhaust was vastly improved. Went over to my friends house and let him drive it and he agreed it was a different car, and I haven't even tried the race tune yet. Definitely worth the dough. If you're on the fence like I was, I recommend getting this tuner, you won't be disappointed. Drove it about 150 miles over the weekend and even with spirited driving, my average gas mileage increased by just over 1 MPG. Very happy with this tuner and of course the service from AM. Ordered the tuner at 9:00pm on a Monday night and had the tuner with custom tunes by Friday afternoon.

    this was a very easy install all you need to do it plug it into your OBDII port and the tuner will have you follow steps to write the new tune on and it saves your stock files which is really nice incase you ever want to return it to stock

    The Tuner itself is a great product, and I could tell the difference compared to stock. However updating the tuner has been a pain, and I did not read anywhere about the need for windows 8.1. Without windows 8.1, the device driver of the tuner cannot be downloaded correctly and errors occur.
