Sound How deep/loud is this compared to the Roush axle-back Exhaust, Flowmaster Outlaws and MRT Interceptors??

McNATSty

  • Mc, How deep? The MACs are much deeper. To my ear, MAC mufflers are as deep as the American Thunder (by Flowmaster) but offer a much cleaner and clearer sound. These should come stock on the vehicle. How loud? The MAC mufflers produce a more loose or hollow sound (which adds to the depth) and seem to rumble forever (the three you listed sound more tight and precise). MACs sound incredible. In my opinion, they offer the best balance of deep/loud, especially when coupled with an o/r H-pipe. Youtube them and hear it yourself. Hope this helps!

INSTALLATION How is this set up installed is it a blot on .or di i have to cut pipes and welld or something

  • I have installed over 20 exhausts on our '11, '12 and '13 Mustangs. Its rather simple and I will try and give you a step by step. Here is how I do it. You will need 13 mm and 15 mm wrenches and sockets. Lube the 3 rubber mounts that each muffler mounts slide in to. Loosen the clamp where the muffler meets the rest of the exhaust. Push up on the exhaust pipe to move it away from the clamp. At this point you should be able to slide the muffler out of the forward mounts and then remove it from the rear mount. If you have trouble you can push the muffler toward the back of the car, while it is still mounted to the rubber. This will expose the forward muffler mounting bracket bolts, which can be removed and the bracket can be lowered with the muffler, then installed on the new mufflers and reinstalled in reverse order. The clamp from the stock muffler must be removed and used to install the new muffler. I like to hand tighten the clamp, then move the tips into position before tightening it all the way. I hope this helps.

2011+ Mustang GT Mac axleback exhaust

I'll start with out of the box impressions. The polished finish is very nice. All the welds look clean and precise. The attention to detail on the tips themselves isn't as refined as some of the more expensive axlebacks but looks good enough regardless. I was immediately impressed overall though, and carried them outside to install them right away! I laid them on the ground to get ready to pull off the stock exhaust and noticed a dent on the driver side tip. Luckily though it is located out of sight once installed. I called American Muscle to report it and they more than took care of me! Great customer service and set on making sure I was satisfied. The exhaust went on the car with no surprises or hiccups. I didn't have to bend any hangers or anything like that. I fired up my car and was more than pleased with the exhaust note. VERY deep note on this axleback. The sound is very smooth while driving and is hard to describe but just has a quality tone to it. No obscene cackling and just a little popping coming down from revs. These are louder than say gt500 axlebacks but not to loud at all. Actually when cruising at a steady speed you hardly hear them. Of course though they come alive when you get aggressive on the throttle. They have a great sound under normal acceleration too. Just a good deep, smooth, rumble/roar. My only disappointment with sound is they do drone around 1800-2000 rpm. In my auto car with 3.15 gears this puts me right at 70mph. It isn't unbearable and doesn't interfere with the Sync system by any means, but it is there. My car will get gears (probably 3.73's) soon enough and this will put the drone range at a different speed so my highway driving won't be affected by the drone anymore. If it bother's you, you can use the "hill assist" feature on your automatic car and it won't allow the transmission to shift into 6th gear putting your rpm's out of the drone range. All in all I'm happy with my Mac axlebacks. The drone and simple looking tips are my only legitimate complaints, but for the quality of the sound and the price they are hard to beat! My video doesn't do it justice really but will give you an idea anyway. Also the idle has less of a "boat" sound in person.

    A Mixed Bag

I had MAC axlebacks on my '99 GT and they sounded simply awesome! Yes, there was drone around 1800-2100RPM, but it was livable (and I was younger). Thinking that I wanted to go louder than my GT500 axlebacks, and with the help of the other reviews here and on forums, I ordered the MACs again. While they're nicely put together, especially for the price, and the external sound and volume is again awesome, inside the car is a different story. Sound and volume are subjective, and to my ear these are MUCH louder inside and out than the GT500's. MUCH. Inside, the drone is unbearable. I think I now have fillings that have come loose. It literally gave me a headache. Research shows that a resonance tube (it goes by a few names) can be made and welded on, and that should solve most of the drone (research also showed that boom mat and/or close-cell foam does not stop drone). I may try the resonance tube or sell them since AM does not take back exhaust once installed. Do your research to make sure these are for you.

Perfect Exhaust note for your GT

After previously having Mac exhaust on one of my foxbody mustangs I was anxious to try it on my new coyote. My mufflers arrived when expected, and we're packaged well. The next morning I put them on the car. The install went quickly, a 14 mm socket and an extention was all that was needed. Once the car was off the jackstands I couldn't wait to hear it. Let me tell you, I'm impressed. Even with my CATS and resonators still on the car it is much louder... and deeper... this is how mustangs should sound.

Deep and Aggressive Muscle Car Sound

Great overall product quality out of the box especially for the money spent. Exhaust is easy to install and fits the way it should. I am VERY happy with sound these put out. They have that deep, aggressive sound without the raspy backfire that most axle-backs out there seem to have. I am very happy with this product.

Mac Axle-Backs on my 2013 GT

In all honesty, it's my opinion that this exhaust makes a newer 5.0 sound as close to an older 5.0 as you are going to get with just an axle-back system. The install was not complicated, however mac sends no instructions and AM's videos never show that you need to also loosen the intermediate pipes that connect to the X-pipe, or that you must "rip" your existing, spot welded clamps, off of your stock system to install this system. But AM was great at helping me get in touch with Mac techs when I asked what else I needed to do. Smooth sailing from then on. Previous reviewers have been kind when saying there was a slight or mild drone to this system. Between 1800-2200 there is significant drone with these chambered mufflers. With the stock 3:31 rear and 6 speed manual trans, it seems to be right at highway speed (65-75+ MPH). There is none of the overwhelming rasp that some of the straight-through style systems produce, and the tone is EXTREMELY deep. No video that I have seen anywhere can accurately depict how deep it is. The resonant tone is nice for the most part, but again comes at a price. If you like deep, this exhaust is for you. If drone is a concern, or you do a lot of highway travel, this may not be the exhaust for your GT.

    Best sound for your 5.0

This is hands down the best sounding exhaust for the new 5.0s. The mufflers are alot lighter and stainless so no rust issues. Install on my 14 took me under 2 hours. Fitment on Mac products isn't perfect but a little muscle and finagling and they look great. The hanger brackets are a pain but can be reached with a 13mm ratchet wrench. The hangers/brackets need to be put on first than loosen your socket connection and pull on the tips where u want them then crank your clamp down. Sound is phenomenal if your not looking for a crackly or obnoxious muffler. Get em you will love the sound!

    great deep tone

first off the install wasn't as bad as most make it out to be, i could've done it faster if i hadn't done it in the late evening with low light. the sound is great when cruising at a steady speed but like others have said it drones between 1700-2000 rpm. the fit and finish is good but i can tell one tip sticks out further than another by an 1/8" or so. overall i'm pretty satisfied with it.
