Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Stephanie with here, checking out a subtle but important styling piece from MMD, these black bolt-on hood struts with Mustang lettering, fitting all 2005 to 2014 Mustangs. Modern Muscle Design, or MMD as they're known, is an industry-leading appearance brand, specializing in separating your ride from the rest with their unique appearance parts. If you'd like to check out more from MMD for your Mustang, you can always head back to the website and check out MMD under the Featured Brand section of the homepage. I'm not sure that anyone likes the look of the factory hood prop, so why are we still using it? These black hood struts offer a much cleaner appearance and a little touch of extra style with the Mustang lettering in the bracket. Not only do these hood struts clean up your engine bay, but they also allow you to pop your hood to wrench on your Mustang without the prop rod in your way. Just take a look at the 2014 behind me, and you can see the cleaner appearance. And if you'd like to see some more of these hood struts, you can always head back to the Product page on the website to check out some customer-submitted images of them installed on customer cars. And while you're there, you can read up on some reviews of the product as well. The hood struts are powder coated and not painted, so you know you can expect a durable and fade resistant black finish. They're also gas-powered struts, and do come with both upper and lower mounting brackets. Getting these installed should take you an hour or less, thanks to the fact that both brackets utilize the factory bolt locations. That means that there's no drilling required, so these hood struts will also work with after-market hoods that use the factory mounting locations. If you guys have any questions about the hood struts or the install itself, you can always reach out to one of our many Mustang experts by phone or e-mail, and they'd be more than happy to help you out. Achieving a cleaner engine bay could be easier than you thought, thanks to this black MMD bolt on hood strut kit for all 2005 to 2014 Mustangs, available right here at

Prop Rod? Are you still using that old style factory prop rod that Ford installed in your S197 Mustang? Well then join the new millennium with a set of officially licensed "Mustang" Hood Struts from Modern Muscle Design for modern convenience and impressive under hood styling.

Officially Licensed by Ford. This set of two Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts are officially licensed by Ford and feature the modern "MUSTANG" text in block lettering laser cut out of each mounting bracket, these are not cheap decals that will peel off in a matter of months.

Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that old ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but also holds it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they have a black powercoated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Application. This officially licensed Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is designed for use on the 2005 to 2014 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, GT, Bullitt, BOSS and Shelby GT500 models. The Kit includes two black gas powered struts, mounting brackets, and all the required mounting hardware.

Interested in buying this kit. Before I do I was wondering if I would be able to buy the mustang lettering mounting bracket with the carbon fiber strut?

  • We do not carry a carbon fiber hood strut kit with the Mustang lettering. If you want Mustang lettering this is your only option.

Purchased the struts about a 18 months ago. Easy to out on, lots of compliments at car shows and meets. Give it a 5 in all categories. The struts seem to have lost their hydraulic lift. The strut no longer holds the hood. Does AM offer replacement struts without having to purchase the whole set?

  • Unfortunately, Modern Muscle Design does not offer a warranty this far from the date which the kit was acquired.

I have a 2016 Mustang GT and seen this hood strut kit in the 15-16 mustang catalog and this hood strut kit says it will fit but on the website it says it only fits 05-014 mustangs. I was wondering if it will work on my 16 Mustang.

  • The MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit w/ Mustang Lettering - Black (05-14 All) will not work with the 15-16 mustangs. We do have hood struts for the 15-16 mustangs however it will not have the mustang lettering.

will hood struts work on a Cervini's hood will these hood struts work on a Cervini's hood? if not, which ones will?

  • The hood struts fit the standard hood bolt holes. Beyond that it might be good to check out if the Cervini structure is flexible so that the struts push it up when the hood is closed.

'13 & '14 additional requirements I asked a shop to install these, but after the technician ruined my hood installing the CDC Shaker, no one would install them because the instructions say to cut an inch out of some plastic piece and basically move the piece under the plane of the hood. For those of you that installed this on your '13s, did you omit this step?

  • Installed on my '14. Do NOT omit this step, since the driver's side strut will not clear the stock position of the holder. It's very easy to cut through the rubber with wire trimmers, and just follow the user-submitted instructions for replacing the holder once you've got it cut.

MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

I bought these bolt on hood struts about a week ago for my 14 Mustang, and they really look good on the car. They add a touch of class to the engine bay. The product is great, does the job very nicely, to bad I can't say the same for the directions. The directions need to be up-dated. Bolting the parts to the hood and fender were not the problem. When it came to putting the struts on, all the directions said you had to do was to "pop" them on. It doesn't work that way, I tried it that way and all I got was a bent clip. Yes, at each end there is a small clip that needs to "swing" out of the way about 180 degrees and then pull straight down. I did this after bending the clip on my first try. I pulled it out and straightened it and all went well. I did the other three this way and yes they will "pop" on. I put a very small amount of grease in the ball socket just so it wasn't dry. Finding the small hole to put the pin back in may take some extra time, but it's well worth it. Install time would have taken about an hour, but my little problem added about 45 minutes to the job. Don't make the same mistake I did, and install should take about an hour. Great product!!! but up-date the directions.

They work and they say Mustang

I probably can't tell you anything about these that other reviews haven't already mentioned but here's a few points anyway. If you bought the chrome set, you can buy stainless steel bolts at any auto store that will look a lot better, M6 1.0 bolts. Get some grease, put some on the 4 balls before you put the strut caps on. With grease you don't need to remove the pins first, but you can if you want. Once installed, the brackets attached to the frame will slide, they really should have had two bolts but the idea of this set is to not require any new drilling. If you have the time and tools, make a second hole to prevent movement, but it doesn't appear to hurt anything either way. Don't over tighten the bolts trying to stop the brackets from moving, it won't work and you will snap the bolts. If you did break a bolt bead off, note that pliers can probably turn the bolt slowly and get it out, I didn't have to drill it out because only the head that snapped off was tight, the bolt inside was fairly easy to spin backward and take out. I really wanted to give these 5 stars but they came ungeased, limited instructions and I think they could have added a small piece under the bolts to prevent bracket sliding. Not normally a big deal but these are notably more expensive than other sets, I expected to be WOWed.

    Poor Design. Impossible to install

The hood shocks do not just POP on.. They say you have to remove the pins then install the shocks on the mounts.. then install the pins.... this is contrary to the instructions that came with mine. I have spent $4,000 here and they would not even send me a replacement here until I sent the poorly designed struts back. These are 40 bucks wholesale parts and I have bought 4k in parts retail. Go with the Rousch struts.. the work better, the struts pop on and are actually cheaper......

    Bolt on hood struts

Easy to install until you get to installing the shocks on the brackets. It's a real pain in the backside! After I finally got them on I had to repaint the end of the shocks because I had worn the paint off trying to get them on. Should be easier than that.

OK, there are two sets of instructions on this product, DO NOT follow the customer submitted instructions. I did lose the retaining clip in the engine compartment! I just can't find it, I know you're thinking I'm lame but that's not the case, it's not necessary! Just snap them in place, It's very simple and the product looks and works great! I ended up buying a whole new set just over one retaining ring, but that's my fault not on MMD or American Muscle. Just follow the instructions in the box, not the customer submitted instructions.

    MMD "Mustang" Strut

Perfect fitment. Added Instruction for 2010 is very helpful. Put on with hood open and prop rod in place. Once you have everything bolted down, and hydraulic rams on the bottom mount slowly lift hood with your shoulder and pop on rams to upper mount. Perfect product

    Under the hood curb appeal

The struts were pretty easy to install, although the instructions that came with them weren't very clear. A quick You Tube video helped me install the struts in less than an hour. The lift assist is great and I love the look. A friend of mine recommended these struts and I would do the same.

Kit installs easily - instructions are not complete for 2013 model

I just installed the hood lift kit and it looks great (really like the MUSTANG letters cut into the brackets!). The kit does exactly what I wanted it to do.....the hood opens a little wider than with the prop rod and is solidly supported when open. The instructions were decent, but there are a couple of things I would add to them: 1. Have someone available to hold the hood open when connecting the struts. The struts are too long when the hood is supported on the prop rod so it helps to have a second person to hold the hood open for you. The struts are very difficult to compress so it worked best to open the hood wide enough that they just clipped in place. 2. On my 2013 model, the upper bracket interferes with a line running from the fender to the hood. There are 2 attachment points on the hood for this line and one of them is directly under the bracket. I had to remove the line and re-route it, but this was not addressed in the instructions. I ended up re-using the upper attachment point and for the lower one, I pushed the clip into one of the letters cut into the bracket. Not sure if this is recommended, but if I didn't attach the lower clip, it looked like this line might get pinched when closing the hood. Overall a great product!

This product works really good and looks great.

I only had one problem with these. The bottom brackets would kick out when I closed the hood and wouldn't set flush with the inside fender no matter how much I tighten the bolt. Quick fix was to switch the bottom brackets (right to left ,left to right side) now the brackets stay nice and flush and don't kick out. The hood seems to open and close better too. I haven't had a problem since. Looks great and NO gap between the fender and brackets.

    Perfect Addition To My Mustang

These Mustang struts are the perfect addition to my Mustang. I agree, Ford should have installed these right from the factory, instead of the prop pole. The installation for us took a little longer than stated, simply because a few things that were not clear in the instructions. 1. location on the fender is not accurate (maybe just my 2007) 2. No indication in the instructions to remove the pin before installing the strut ball joint 3. I had to use a socket wrench instead of a flat head screw driver to remove the bolts Over all, I am very satisfied with the Hood Struts. They appear to be very good quality and they definitely prop the hood open.

    MMD Bolt on Hood Struts

Not as easy as you would think to install, but I have them attached to a Cervini Hood. They look killer, but I only question with the bigger hood if a strong wind will collapse the hood on my head. The clearance you get in the hood is great and the mustang logo was a nice touch. I recommend this product,

great product just one little glitch

The installation was a breeze and the end product looks great. the only glitch is the windshield washer line on my 2014 Mustang convertible runs right where the passenger side bracket is installed. I moved the line a bit so the bracket could be bolted down but have concerns about that line possibly being pinched. Just got off the phone with your customer service rep who said it shouldn't be a problem and to try using the washer with the hood closed. Will do that as soon as I can. If not for this little problem the above rating would be all 5 stars.

Great look struts!! Change install instructions

I am very satisfied with the look and feel of this product!! The only thing I would like to point out is that the install procedures have you take off the wrong bolt from the fenders to have everything line up and the good close. I had to call a technician and he said that they get that call all the time and that the instructions are incorrect!! Please change the instruction so no one else has the same issue!!!!!! Other than that I have no complaints! Great product! I even just got two of my friends to but them because of how they looked on my car!
