Improve Performance. Wake up your V6-powered pony for faster acceleration off the line with a set of 3.73 Motive Performance Plus gears. A steeper set of gears will get you into your power band faster for faster launches and more punch off the line.

3.73 Gear Ratio. 3.73 gears are a great combination of performance and fuel economy that's ideal for a daily-driven 'Stang that sees a lot of highway time. If you put a lot of miles on your Pony and don't want to increase your cost at the pump, a 3.73 ratio will still give you the added acceleration you want without compromising fuel economy dramatically.

Superior Construction. These Motive ring and pinon gears are CNC cut from high grade 8620 gear steel, and factory lapped for precision fit. Each set is hardness tested prior to leaving the factory to ensure the highest quality.

Recommended Upgrade. Changing the rear axle gear ratio will throw off the calibration of your Mustangs speedometer, but a new Speedometer Gear is an inexpensive way to fix this issue.

Application. This Motive Performance Plus Ring and Pinion Gear set will fit all 1994 to 1998 V6 Ford Mustangs equipped with a 7.5" rear end. A master bearing kit is recommended by most installers, especially on high mileage vehicles, see drop down option above.

Technical Note. Installation costs will vary, but a good rule of thumb is between $250 and $300. Be sure to work with a reliable shop that you trust for installations.

I was wondering what speedometer gear i would need with these 3.73s to correct my speedometer?

98stang

  • The Speedometer gear that you would need with the Motive Performance Plus 3.73 Gears (94-98 V6) depends on which tooth gear you have. If you have a 6 Tooth Drive Gear, you will need the Ford Speedo Gear - 18 Tooth (83-98 Manual) item #53679 (www.americanmuscle.com/speedo-gear-18tooth-manual.html) and if you have a 7 Tooth Drive Gear, you will need the Ford Speedo Gear - 21 Tooth (83-98 Manual) item #53682 (www.americanmuscle.com/speedo-gear-21tooth-manual.html).

Question Resolved

Gas mileage ? How much gas mileage am I expected to lose by putting these 3.73 gears in? My mustang has the factory 2.73 Gears.

Heyoke

  • It would difficult to say as it will depend on the type of driving that is performed. City driving will change slightly, however, highway cruising will result in higher RPM's while driving which we lower mpg ratings.

    97 v6 mustang

so i asked around to see how easy and just how much someone would charge to install these 3.73 gears on my v6. got a good price, came on-line bought the gears with the bearing kit for a great price you can't beat, i should have bought the recalibration tool because it threw off my speedometer by 15 mph but i will get it soon. this product is great, faster take off, 2nd gear burns out, along with 3rd gear as well, my v6 is coming along, hoping to add the headers and throttle body spacer after the recalibration tool to go along with the full exhaust, cold air intake, under-drive pulleys, and performance chip. love American muscle, keep doing what you do.

    less slow!

I had to rebuild the rear end of my mustang so I figured I would throw in some lower gears to get some more pep from my slow single port. I am very happy with the result, the acceleration is much better. The down side is that at 65mph im at 2500rpm (5spd). At least it keeps me from getting speeding tickets on the freeway.

    Worth It, Does The Job

I bought 3.73 Gears for my V6, I decided to stay with the 7.5in rear. But I must say, the gears do a VERY noticeable difference in acceleration off the line and in the low-mid RPM range. These gears wont hurt your MPG either, it will be near stock. Dont waste your money on FRPP gears or others, Motive Performance is an inexpensive and reliable way to go to upgrade gears. Also, gears only whine if the technician doesnt take the time to align them correctly. Definitely recommended though.

    Wow

I bought these gears along with the installation kit, and Royal Purple fluid. This really woke the car up. I do a lot of highway driving and noticed no change in noise or fuel economy. An SCT tuner will allow you to correct your speedometer and get some extra power at the same time.

    Quick Speed Boost

I ordered and installed these in my v6 Pony. This is probably one of my favorite mods too. The gears change the power range for the car, giving it very quick acceleration. This will however have your car running at higher RPMs on highway, or higher speeds (60-80mph). You will definitely notice that, but the speed boost is well worth it. I decided to go with the 3.73's since i do a lot of highway driving every day. My car came with 2.73's, so I figured this would give a good boost, without sacrificing too much MPG. Love these gears. Pretty straight up to install. Just be sure to fill the rear end with some good gear oil and a tube of Friction Additive. Royal Purple was my choice. Thanks again American Muscle for another amazing product!

These gears are exactly what the title says, nasty! All together it was around $750 for the works, however, I do recommend getting a posi-traction differential. My car is a lot more fun to drive now.

it is for street & STRIP

I got exactly what I wanted and a little bit more. Since I'm not racing it I should have only went up to 355 instead of 373. I would say it runs like the First 50's . It is like I traded Over Drive for Granny gear. I'm in my Power Range and can stay at 65 highway with no harm, I just have to get used to higher RPM ALL THE TIME, I can get Squarely.

    Woke the pony up!

This was a great product. Made my V6 really fly.. Only thing I didn't like is that it didn't come with and spacers or any of the bearings or crush collar that are pretty much mandatory. I wouldn't recommend doing rhis yourself unless you are a very experienced tech with a hoist. Don't count on finishing it in 1 day either. Took 2 buddies and I 2 7 hr. Days with a hoist. Very pleased with the product thus far. Just doin the 500 mile break in.

    Great Mod

Great mod albeit expensive with POSI, bearing kit and a $ 430 prof. installation. It was worth waiting and saving. It really gives a boost to your V6. After long search on Inet, AM provided the best prices for these parts.
