      Video Review & Installation

Hey guys. Today we're gonna be taking a look at and installing the MSD coil pack for 1996 to 1998 4.6 liter Mustangs. This is a direct replacement performance upgrade so you can replace or stock coil packs with this one or other aftermarket coil packs. If you guys are looking for a stronger hotter spark you're gonna be looking for a coil pack like this one. This delivers more energy and voltage than your stock coil packs which is how it delivers on that stronger hotter spark. You will need two coil packs for the 4.6 liter V8 Mustang and these are sold separately so just keep that in mind. It's always a good idea to replace both coil packs at the same time if you can and also check out your spark plug wires while you're in there replacing these. These cost about $80 a piece and they are very easy to install. I'll call it a one out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter and we'll go ahead now and show you how to get this on the car. For this install we used a flat head screwdriver, a seven-millimeter socket, a four-millimeter Allen, and you'll need a ratchet or an impact gun. All right, guys. You can see the coil packs right up here in the front. They're very easy to get to on either side up here. We are only gonna be replacing one since you do only get one MSD coil pack with each order. The first thing that you're gonna wanna do is mark your spark plug wires because it's very important that you put them back in the exact same position. We've already done that, just make sure that you guys do that before removing any, especially since you're gonna be removing all four at one time. So with these spark plug wires, the way to get them off is we're actually going to squeeze like this and then they'll just pull off our coil pack. So we'll go ahead, remove all of our spark plug wires, and then the coil pack is actually held in place by four seven-millimeter bolts, so we'll go ahead, grab a seven-millimeter socket and undo those. We're also gonna disconnect the coil pack at the same time. All right. So we're going to disconnect our clip right here. I'm gonna use a little flat head screwdriver to help me just so I can get this off a little bit easier, I'm just going to pry the sides a little bit so that I can get the tabs passed. All right. So now we have our seven-millimeter socket, we're gonna go ahead and unbolt this. All right. And now you can pull the coil out. All right, guys. At this point you are ready to install the MSD coil pack. Keep in mind that you want the electrical connection facing forward. One thing I will say is that MSD does give you new hardware for this. They do include spacers but if you're installing on a Mustang you don't need to use the spacers. So don't install the spacers with this coil, you only need the spacers for a Ford Focus. All right. Now we'll put in the MSD supplied hardware which is a four-millimeter Allen and they do give you little washers as well. So make sure you have the coil pack lined up so these thread in. All right. I have them all started so I'm just gonna go ahead and tighten them down now. All right. Now we'll plug in our electrical connection. All right. At this point we're gonna go ahead and get our spark plug wires back connected. Like I said they are labeled so it's really easy, I know exactly where they go. Wanna make sure that they really click down into place. You guys can see it's a little bit tough but I wanna make sure that they're in place perfectly. Replacing the other coil pack is the exact same process. Like I said earlier it's always a best practice to replace both coil packs at the same time and make sure you check out your spark plug wires while you're in there. Another thing that you're gonna wanna do now at this point is just start the car and make sure it runs and idles smoothly just to make sure you have all your spark plug wires back in the correct location. All right, guys, that's gonna wrap up this review and install. Keep in mind that you can always check this coil pack out more online. I'm Stephanie and for all things Mustang keep it right here at americanmuscle.com.
