Please read through the instructions carefully before starting this project. Take the time to get all the materials together as well as all the safety equipment.
Tools needed:
- Ratchet
- 8mm Socket
- 10mm Socket
- 13mm Socket
- 13mm Wrench
- Razor Blade or Gasket Scraper
- Shop Rag
- Feeler Gauge (optional)
- Flathead Screw Driver
- Allen Wrench
Removing the Old Shifter:
- Remove your shifter knob. This should just unscrew. If you have an aftermarket knob, it might have a screw on the back side of it.
- Take off the shifter boot. This just pops off. You can use a trim remover if it doesn’t just slide off. Remove the clip for the cigarette lighter.
- Remove the two bolts on the shifter handle.
- Now that the handle is removed, remove the rubber boot. There are four, 8 mm bolts.
- When you have the shifter exposed, remove the four, 13mm bolts holding the shifter to the transmission. You can throw these bolts away; the new shifter comes with stronger bolts.
- With the old shifter removed, scrape any silicone or old gasket off the transmission. Put a shop rag in the transmission to avoid anything falling in.
- Side note: If you have not done so in a while, now is a great time to change your transmission fluid. It is a lot easier to refill it from the shifter than the fill hole on the bottom of the transmission.
Installing the New Shifter
- Put down your new shifter base gasket. You can use silicone, but the rubber gasket sold at Americanmuscle.com is a lot easier to use and helps to avoid mess.
- Bolt your new 5.0 shifter to the transmission using the four new 13mm mounting bolts, provided with the transmission.
- You will need to cut the main shifter boot just a little. Take a sharp razor blade and cut out the middle section like so. This way it can seal against the lower part of the shifter.
- With the main boot center section cut out, we can put it back on.
- Stretch the main boot over the shifter to form a tight seal. If needed, you can use a flathead screw driver to help get it over the shifter.
- Install the handle. It is an Allen head. I purchased the base and handle gasket, so I also put my handle gasket on at this point.
- Now we must set the stop bolts. These bolts are to allow full stick travel. Put it into 2nd gear and hold. Then screw the stop bolt against the shifter stick. Back it off one turn or .010 gap from the stick. This does not have to be that precise, though. Put it into 1st gear and hold. Gap the bolt the same as the other bolt (.010). Check all the gear positions. Make sure the stop bolts allow full travel of the stick and that the stick does not hit the stop bolts. When you are all set, you can tighten the outer lock nuts to secure the bolts in place.
- Put the shifter boot back on. Slide it over the handle. Make sure to plug the cigarette lighter clip back in.
- Put your shifter handle back on.
- Enjoy!!!! This is really nice shifter. It is a lot tighter than the stock shifter and makes 2nd to 3rd so easy. The base and handle gasket American Muscle sells with the shifter makes install clean and easy.
