Review & Installation Video

Hey Justin from AmericanMuscle.com here, taking a closer look at these very budget friendly intakes from SR Performance, available in black or polished fitting all 96-04 Mustang GTs. This kit completely replaces the power robbing factory airbox in your GT

Improves Horsepower. This SR Performance Cold Air Intake kit completely replaces the restrictive factory air box and paper filter element in your 1996-2004 4.6 GT Mustang with a high flow filter assembly for a noticeable increase in horsepower and throttle response all while still filtering out harmful power robbing dust particles. This Cold Air Intake pulls cooler denser air from inside the inner fender well to make more power that you can feel.

Reusable Filter. Included in this kit is a SR Performance High Flow reusable air filter. So there is no need to go out and buy a new filter every few thousand miles. Just clean the filter, re-oil it, save money, and go!

Powdered Coated Finish. The SR Performance Cold Air Intake will not only improve horsepower and acceleration, but it will also improve your Mustang's under hood appearance with a stealthy matte black powder coated finish. Now you can have the best of both worlds: performance and style.

Simple Install. The SR Performance Cold Air Intake kit is relatively easy to install with only basic hand tools needed. No extra modifications are required for the installation. See the video below for a basic overview of the installation process.

Application. This SR Performance Cold Air Intake System is specifically designed to fit the 1996 to 2004 GT  Mustangs equipped with the 4.6L engine and does not require re-tuning the vehicles computer for operation. Does not fit Bullitt models.

Technical Note. The Mass Airflow Housing and Sensor are not included. This kit is designed to reuse the factory unit.

Was worried at first because I was fitting my v6 mustang to a GT Mass air flow sensor. No issues. Lots more power. You notice the difference and gave it a more aggressive sound. Thanks....

This intake is great especially for the price! The black looks great under my hood. Fits nice and tight with no air leaks. I had a Jlt pvc design that came with my Stang and never liked the bulky pipes ...

it looks like this filter has a closed top filter and the chrome one is a open top filter is there any performance difference between the filters because of that slight difference

JoshuaC

What is this made of? Because I wouldn't want this to rust after three years like the BBK CAI does.

Adam

  • The SR Performance Black Cold Air Intake is wrinkle coated aluminum. It has a powder coating that should prevent rust as long as it up kept.

This intake is great especially for the price! The black looks great under my hood. Fits nice and tight with no air leaks. I had a Jlt pvc design that came with my Stang and never liked the bulky pipes that seemed to come loose often and wasnt thrilled about the mass air flow sensor being in the fender. Now the sensor is were it should be, I noticed more power over the jlt and my high and hanging idle problems are GONE!

    Good power slight fit issue

I order my intake and I came in in just a couple of day like it said it would waited on my plenum and throttle body to arrive got it all here and installed have great power gains. I just had small issue with the intake where the IAC did not want to clear so it sits right on my oil filler neck it's not a big deal but it is a little annoying

    Saw a little performance increase

Before I installed this intake I was running a consistent 14.2 in the quarter mile. After installation I was a consistent 14.07 with a best time of 13.90 in the quarter. Definitely a good bang for the buck install. But I was a little disappointed that they did not include enough hose clamps. I had to pull one off of the factory intake. Also since this is a universal intake that also fits the V6 motors I was disappointed that they did not include the plug for the intake air temperature sensor hole since the V8 does not use this. Even though the CAI did not come with some things and I had to either reuse or buy some additional parts I am still pleased with the overall quality and performance. I would recommend this to anyone, but would also bring it to their attention that you may have to make a trip to the parts store.

Cheap Mod With A Clean Look

I bought this Cold Air Intake for my race car (2001 GT Coupe). The instructions were very detailed. The fitment was not exactly a "drop in" as the tubes rub on the strut tower. The air box plate had to be bent to have close to a proper fit. I did not notice any performance gains. Overall, the mod gave the engine bay a cleaner look than stock. If you are looking for actual performance gains and ease of fitment, I would recommend spending the money and purchasing a product of better quality.

    02 Matte Black GT

Love the product and was torn between this and a short ram intake. After a couple of days of research, I decided to go with this product and it helped a good bit with a small problem I was having due to my 78mm BBK throttle body. I had no response in 5th gear and now I'm good to go. Your company is always on point with shipping and always get the best products for the money. Thanks AM

    Cali Legal-NOT!

I put this on my 99 GT/Auto with a Bama tuner and I gotta tell ya, I was impressed, the install was a little tuff until i realized you have to stuff the filter elbow deep into the fender well, then it a ll made sense. But worth every bit of the money invested. The only draw back is I didn't realize and AM don't tell you if you don't ask (wich i didn't until after I had it on the car) IT IS NOT CALIFORNIA LEGAL! And because I've installed it, it's mine now. Oh well, good thing I kept the stock air box cause this CAI is worth the effort of changing it out next smog check.

    Fair product

I used this on my 96 gt. The only complaints I have , no instructions in the box, the pipe had a few scratches out of the box, and the air filter is wrong for the pipe not a foot fitment at all. Clamps could have been a little better. Overall a good product still using on my car until I make a few upgrades to my car.

    Looks good.

I installed this intake with a little finesse. Managed to scuff some paint off the pipe where it enters the fender, so be careful during install. It certainly makes a lot more noise from the front of the car than before, but I didn't notice much of a performance difference. My car is black, and I was glad to find an intake in black for an affordable price. It looks good.

I bought this one because I wanted a black one. The cai set up is easy to install added a nice look to the engine bay. The one thing I did not like about it was it had a hole and grommet for an air sensor that where for pre 2002 mustangs. Which I had to find a way to plug it.

    I can feel the difference

Shipped in two days. Went in easily enough. Only two issues were that I had to use one of my own hoses to make it fit, and it came a little different than displayed. In the display it has it coming out of the throttle body and curving in to the panel so that the filter sits horizontally. However, the one I received had an extra 90 degree welded on, so rather than sitting horizontally, my filter is sitting vertically in my fender. Had to use a pneumatic drill on the clamp to make sure it stayed. Other than that it works great. Can feel the difference in horsepower and throttle response, especially in the higher rpms.

    Good deal

I chose this CAI because it has the filter in the fender, its not chrome, and the price was tough to beat. Delivery was typical for American Muscle; packaged so it didn't get damaged in shipping and fast--in other words, excellent. Installation was straight forward with the exception of some slight clearance problems with my strut tower brace. This caused a bit of adjusting and making a rubber pad to protect and quiet the spot where the intake tube and the brace contacted each other. The paint finish on the CAI looks good but is very poor quality. Even the hose clamps scratched the finish and the slightest contact with anything scratche the paint off. I'll be repainting mine with better paint or have it powder coated for looks and durability. All-in-all, I would say this is a good product.

    Pretty Good deal

Decent product. I don't see any major downside between this CAI and the other ones from BBk and the like. Paint does scratch easily so be careful when installing it. I had to reuse one of my old hose clamps so don't throw them away until the job is done.

    Stack Racing CAI

I went with this CAI because i liked the idea of taking the air from outside the engine compartment. I had a K&N CAI on my old Mustang and perfomance wise they are definitly the same. Install was a little trickier than i thought it would be but still only took 45min. Also the air filter is smaller than i thought it would be so i will probably try to find a larger one that will still fit into the wheel well. This is an excellent product none the less and would put it on any future mustang. P.S. from 6000-6500 RPM it absolutely WAILS like a banshee.
