Review & Installation Video

Hey, Justin here with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my brief look into the SR Performance cold air intake kit fitting the 3.6 and 3.9L motor found in all 99-04 V6 Mustangs. This budget friendly intake sports a very popular design when it comes to the Ne

Improves Horsepower. This SR Performance V6 Mustang Cold Air Intake kit completely replaces the restrictive factory air box and paper filter element in your 1999-2004 3.8L and 3.9L V6 Mustang with a high flow filter assembly for a noticeable increase in horsepower and throttle response while filtering out harmful power robbing dust particles. This V6 CAI pulls cooler denser air from inside the inner fender well to make more power that you can feel.

Reusable Filter. Included in this kit is a SR Performance High Flow reusable air filter. So there is no need to go out and buy a new filter every few thousand miles. Just clean the filter, re-oil it, save money and go!

Powder Coated Finish. The SR Performance Cold Air Intake will not only improve horsepower and acceleration, but it will also improve your Mustang's under hood appearance with a flat black powder coated finish. Now you can have the best of both worlds - performance and style.

Simple Install. The SR Performance Cold Air Intake is relatively easy to install with only basic hand tools needed. No extra modifications are required for the installation. See the video below for an overview of the installation process.

Application. The SR Performance Cold Air Intake is designed to fit the 1999-2004 3.8L and 3.9L V6 Mustangs.

Technical Note. The Mass Airflow Housing and Sensor are not included. This kit is designed to reuse the factory unit.

Do i need to buy an in line mass air? The air intake I have on my 2004 3.9 litter, has air temp, and mass air, built into the filter box.How can I use a cold air intake? Is their one that comes with it,or a mod I can do to use the one I have? If I could have part number, that would be a big help.

LeadFoot101

  • You will simply reuse your IAT sensor and your Mass Air Flow Sensor. You can open the casing to get your original MAF sensor out and the IAT sensor simply pulls out of the original intake. The video found on the Installation Tab can show you exactly what I mean. I'd highly recommend taking a look at it. If you still have any questions or concerns, give our Experts a call. They would be happy to help you!

SR or K&N Filter? I have this intake and was just wondering if a K&N filter would be better or not? Not the whole intake, just the filter.

nick2412

  • K&N is a trusted name and SR is on the up and coming. As far as just the filter, i dont beleive you would notice a difference and in my opinion would just save the cash for a different mod.

Which is a better cold air intake, the SR Performance Intake or the AirRaid Cold Air Intake?

CRob1

  • they both are good and have the ups and downs. The SR is fenderwell mounted which means cooler denser air from there but the aluminum pipe gets hot but not too hot like chrome just warm. The AirRaid is a plastic tube which means no heat but the filter is engine mounted which means engine heat hits it first. My opinion SR is better

    Great Product!

Install was pretty straight forward. It took about an hour to do. The coupler that goes on to the MAF is a little small. With a little work, it fits right on. I got a couple of additional items to finish the project just right. The existing vacuum hose wasn't long enough to fit on the intake completely so i got a new one. Plus it was older and cracking anyway. My V6 doesn't have the sensor for the extra opening so I used a 1/4" vacuum plug and put it in the hole. After installing it, its sounds and feels awesome. Great buy.

    Awesome v6 intake

Took longer than expected because it fits tight on the strut tower finder, not sure I'd be able to put a throttle body spacer because I don't think the intake would fit. But the way it's set up it sounds amazing when you push the gas and I can really feel the HP gain.

    Cold Air Intake

Got these in June and had some issues with shipping. But American Muscle worked with the shipping company they used and sped up the process of getting me my cold air intake. Once I got it, it only took about an hour to put on (45 minutes trying to put on the filter, which was smaller than the tube). Once together, I immediately felt and heard a difference in performance. I love the new sound! I'm thrilled with this product! Just take your time and use pictures online to piece it together rather than taking a stab in the dark.

    Wow

Well what can i say this is an awsome intake but there's a couple things you'll need, k well the clamps they send are good but so stiff you can barley tighten them and the cuffling for the top of the intake is to small i barely got it to fit i had to heat it up and stretch it, but once its on there it's amazing you'll feel the difference and here it it sounds awsome just regular driving.

    great product

install was easy i did however had to stretch out the larger cup to fit properly, not a difficult thing to do, just heat it up with a heat gun. the performance gain is very noticeable. my acceleration is much quicker then with the stock air intake and i love the whistle it makes. overall i would highly recommend this product for you mustang.

Boy o boy, this intake man!...

Before anything else i just have to say that this intake is such a beast, the power is felt instantly and the noise that the intake makes when i switch gears sound like i have a supercharger. It took a week to get here and when i try to install it i was disappointed that the pipe that goes bolted on the mass air sensor was bend on the part were the bolt goes, i was able to bend it by overtightened the bolt but since my mass air sensor is made out of plastic i hope it doesn't crack. Also American Muscle, you might want to make the plastic couplers a little bit bigger, at least the one that connects the mass air sensor to the other pipe that goes to the engine. I wish i could have time to return it but since i had to work over the weekend i just cut the larger coupler, some people said their put their couplers in hot water but it didn't work for me, the clamps were a pain too but over all a great intake that looks good when you open the hood but too much hassle to install it.

    • Response from AmericanMuscle

I'm sorry the piping you received was defective. It definitely shouldn't have been bent and over-tightening could possibly cause a problem down the road. Please give us a call and we can get a replacement out to you right away.

    Sounds freaking amazing

I put this on about three months ago and I have to say it might be the best performance part I've ordered so far. In the car at around 3000 rpms, the engine sounds like a 2012 V8 exhaust. It's definitely, louder, faster, and younger again. I swear I've saved at least $300 on gas since I put this on. Although, it doesn't quite fit the way it should to the fender. Order it now. You won't regret it.

    I Can Breath

Was worth some of the hassle in installing. Hose fittings are not the size of fittings on tube and Had to cut about an inch off the throttle body tube to be able to fit together. After all this the low end response is awesome and really makes the Flowmasters Growl Look at old system and wonder how did it breath before. Throttle seems quicker to respond. Would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

    very nice

this is a great first step to getting more power out of your v6. I installed this on my 03 and it gave me more power and it sounds great! my stock exhaust is deeper and you can hear it sucking in air when you put your foot down. the install was not too bad. some of the clamps could have been bigger but they worked, and the fender shield was a pain to get in place but overall not too hard

    stack racing cold air intake

was a little tougher than I first thought the throttle body boot is really tight I put it in real hot water to soften it up and it went on ok. other than that was pretty straight forward I reccomend you watch the video a couple of times just to make you have the assembly procedure fixed in your mind then give it a go.Am pretty pleased with the difference it has made the car in my opinion is much faster on acceleration and sounds pretty mean too al in all a good product. .........sparky

    Not to bad

I bought this to replace the stock intake, the first product that was sent to me was a return...It had none on the actual parts needed, needless to say i called and they sent me a brand new intake. I felt that it was somewhat complicated to install, it seemed like hoses that go over the throttle body and intake didn't fit 100% but i got it on there. Also i did have to go out to the hardware store and buy a new upper intake hose since the one that was sent didn't fit. After the install it give a great sound and looks good.
