Review & Install Video

Hey, Justin from AmericanMuscle.com and today I’m going to be taking a closer look at this convertible styling bar from MMD for all 2005 and up convertible Mustangs. This very budget friendly styling bar from industry leading MMD is a perfect option for someone who wants just a simple bar without all the bells and whistles of more expensive options. Now what you can expect from this bar is strong tubular steel construction wrapped in a dark charcoal vinyl material, which besides being weather resistant, really matches that OEM interior perfectly. Now besides matching your car’s interior very well this bar also fits perfectly on your ride, even with the top up. Getting the bar installed should only take you a couple of hours, just because you have to slightly disassemble your rear interior. While it’s nothing more than popping out a couple of tabs or moving a couple of 10mm bolts, you will need to drill a 2” hole through this upper trim panel, just so the styling bar can go through it, so make sure to have a 2” hole saw on hand before you get started, and be sure to take your time. I have seen many ‘vert owners on this site pair this styling bar up with MMD’s wind deflector for a very functional and stylish package. So if you’re looking for a great entry level styling bar that serves its purpose of looking good, for a price that’s hard to beat, then you’ll definitely want to check out this bar from MMD.

Custom Styling. A Modern Muscle Design Styling Bar will add great custom styling to your 2005 to 2014 convertible S197 Mustang. The MMD Convertible Styling Bar was designed to complement the lines of the S197 perfectly and fits neatly under the factory rag top in nasty weather.

Superior Quality. Constructed from strong tubular steel the MMD Styling Bar is wrapped in a durable weather resistant dark charcoal urethane vinyl and features the same grain texture as the Ford OE interior for a perfect match.

Application. The Modern Muscle Design Styling Bar fits perfectly on all 2005 to 2014 convertible S197 Mustangs, including the V6, GT, and 11-12 Shelby models.

Technical Note: This Styling Bar does not provide roll over protection, and does not have an integrated third brake light.

will the MMD styling bar fit with Cervin's speedster covers

  • Cervini's has styling bars on their models with the speedster covers as well. I dont think you'd have an issue.

  • The MMD Convertible Styling Bar is simply for appearance. It will not assist in the stability of the car in the case of an accident.

Would I be able to use this as a harness bar? It's been hard to find one that will work with the convertible top and the 5 point harness that I wish to install requires one

Noah

  • We do not recommend using any styling bar as a means to attach harnesses. This can be extremely dangerous. If you are having trouble finding one, I suggest seeing if a shop can custom make one for you.

How long does it take to install this and I have the black leather interior and wondering how well the color will match? Thanx!

  • The MMD Convertible Styling Bar - Charcoal (05-14 GT, V6, GT500) will take about 4 hours with someone who has light to moderate mechanical skill. As far as the color this will be a dark charcoal grained texture.

had the style bar installed however it does not sit flat like the ones pictured. the front of the bar sits on the cover nearest the door and goes upward from there. Thought maybe it was install backwards reversed it and still no joy. George W. Rausch

Rearview visibility issues? Our '14 black 'Stang is my wife's pride and joy. Her only hesitation about this bar is the possibility that it will obstruct her rearview vision. Have there been any comments or complaints about obstructed vision?

    Poor fit.

Was meticulous when installing. Read the reviews and heeded all the tips. Even made own template for drilling of interior panels etc. OK, now for the placement of bar into fittings w/all interior panels reinstalled. Everything is going perfectly, But, UGH! Once bar is slid all the way down, there's a huge gap approximately 1/3 of the way around, on each side, where bar meets the interior panel. Can even see the inner pipe of the bar on drivers side. Super disappointed.

    Looks great after some work

I the template did not line up right when I did the install and the holes were off. Also the bar need some coxing to get it fit into place. However, after getting it installed it looks great.

You get what you pay for

While it is really easy to install ,The bar has a 1/4 gap on the rear side of both sides of the bar. The frame attachments are straight but the steel bar inside the foam is not. Can bend only so much, still a gap. Might try to make a rubber spacer but should not have too. Not sure if all of these bars are like this or just mine, but if you look close at pictures on A.M. you can see a gap. Also after putting on the frame part, put the plastic part of body from car over it in place and mark hole to drill. You do not need as big of a hole as in directions, you can trim a little at a time with a razor, side 1 big hole side 2 perfect. the holes are not visible either way.

    Does not fit flush !

The install was super simple and took less than an hour. The gap is large between the bar and the car, but nothing black caulking won't solve. The template for cutting the large hole was way off on my 2014 Mustang, AM needs to look at this problem. Otherwise I like the look.

Like it, but doesn't fit like a glove..

I ordered this item and installed it and noticed a small mark on it and that it didn't fit perfect. AM was quick to replace it, but the new one still wasn't a flush fit...but overall I still like the item

    disappointed in my styling bar

Very easy to install,it only took 90 minutes to install, but only after 2 weeks the finishing seal below is off and hanging. The joint was badly glued and in addition it is too short and impossible to re-install. The bar doesn't fit perfectly on one side, there's a quarter inch gap between the bottom of the bar and the panel. Dispite all these problems,I love the look it gives.

    Fit great -- Appearance average

The install and fit were easier than expected. The appearance of the product was less than desirable. The underlying material used to contour the bar was not uniform -- looks as if someone applied the material to the steel bar by hand and eye and then covered it with the vinyl. It has a lumpy look close up.

This product was easy to install.

I installed the product on my 2013 Mustand in less than an hour using some short cuts I read about on this site. First I took a long time to review the instructions and got all my tools together before starting. The seat bottom popped out in less than a minute, seat back took a few minutes to pop out after taking out the two bolts. Panels pulled apart quickly, (take your time and go slowly, not forcing anything). Took out the seat belt bolts and placed styling bar holders in place with one of the removed screws. Holes drilled quickly (I used a punch before drilling). Retaining bolts went in quickly. Now, I placed paint on the top of the bar holder and placed the panel on top to get a mark for drilling. I also used a 1 and 5/8 hole saw for a smaller hole and it worked well. Did have a friend help me with placement of styling Bar . All went well and it looks great.

    Stack Racing Bar

I pre-ordered this for Father's day, thinking it would take a little bit of time to arrive, it came within 2 days. WOW. The installation instructions guided me to a very easy install. I ordered the non wired one, who needs a 4th brake light anyway. I do wish I could use it to have a dome light in the back, though. Only issue I had was with the template to cut the trim panels, it didn't line up for me so I didn't use the template.

    Better than advertised

I was apprehensive about adding the styling bar to my 2007 GT. First, would I have the mechanical ability to install the bar without ruining my convertible? Second, do I really need to spend another $269.00 for the part? The answer to the first question was a resounding "yes". Other than dropping a bolt into the frame and having to purchase a replacement, the installation was as easy as it could be. (A suggestion for drilling through the backseat trim panels: I coated the top of the mounting bracket using a Sharpie, positioned the backseat trim panel in it's proper place, pressed down, pulled the panel back off, and on the non-showing side was a mark of a half of the circle. I then drilled the hole out from the non-showing side. Both sides were perfectly aligned.) Second, $269.00 was well worth the money. My extremely cool looking grabber orange GT looks even more cool (and I did not think that was possible.) I should have added the styling bar to my Mustang a year ago. As an added bonus, I ordered the bar on Friday night, and received it on Monday without paying additional shipping. Thanks American Muscle.
