Review & Install Video

Hey, Stephanie with, here with my review of the SR Performance Aluminum Radiator, available for your manual '79 to '93 five liter Mustang. This rad is probably going to be for almost any car, from a stock or lightly modded daily that may have a leak, to cars that may see some track time and have a higher demand for cooling. So this rad is an upgrade over the factory radiator, for sure, and for a few reasons. I'll start with the fact that it has a two-row core. The two-row core means that it's going to be able to dissipate heat faster and increase cooling efficiency. Next is the welding on this guy. You're looking at hand welds here on the tank and on the fittings, and SR does that to ensure that the rad will be leak-proof. And who doesn't like looking at some nice aluminum welds? Speaking of that, this rad is aluminum and it's actually pretty lightweight, so you can shave off some pounds as you dissipate heat faster. Another thing I really like about this radiator is that it'll work with either your factory fan or an after-market one, if you're looking to upgrade. And even though this rad has that bigger two-row core, which is about two inches thick, it's still a direct fit product, meaning that no alterations are required to install it. For the install, you're probably looking at about two hours since you will have to drain and remove your old rad first, and then drop this new one in. I'll say that it's a two out of three wrenches on the scale, but just because of the drain and refill, and burping process that you may have to go through. And it's not difficult, it's more of a pain than anything else. You'll need to make sure that you have fresh coolant to fill up with and, of course, a nice catch-can to drain into. Lastly, the price. SR Performance is coming in with the lowest price option for your manual five liter out there at just under the $200 mark. And even though this is the most budget friendly, I don't think that SR skimped on the quality here. It would be nice to see a magnetic drain plug here, but you can pick that up on your own, and the functionality is there with this product. And you can easily compare performance of this rad to other more expensive options out there and not be disappointed. If your rad is damaged or leaking, or you just need to upgrade, either way this guy would work for you. I'm Stephanie, and we'll see you next time, right here at

what are the exact dimensions of this radiator: SR Performance Aluminum Radiator - Manual (79-93 5.0L)

  • The SR Performance Aluminum Radiator has overall dimensions of 29.25” x 19” x 2”.

How much lighter is this radiator than a stock radiator?

  • This SR Performance Aluminum Radiator weighs about 18lbs. This radiator would most likely weigh more than the stock radiator because it's completely metal as opposed to having some plastic like the stock one.

Drain petcock size What is the size for the drain petcock on the radiator (threading as well)? This will be necessary to know so i can get an anode kit for this radiator.

  • There is no petcock. Mine arrived with a plug, not a petcock.

I almost hesitated in buy this because of the price. I am glad I did. The quality is real good. It's advertised as a three row but is actually a large two row but cools as good with my electric fan. I almost feel like I stole this radiator. After one month so far no leaks and cools great. Thank you AM!!!

    Great radiator!

Arrived promptly (with 2 day shipping) and easily installed. Took about 30 minutes. Everything bolts right up but you'll have to open the clips off your old radiator a little bit because the aluminum is thicker than the original but a great product and great cooling for the money. Also is a 2 core but they're twice as wide as the regular so it's really equivalent to a 4 core. This thing is great

    Nice enough 2 row radiator

I bought one of these. It is a nicely built aluminum radiator. It is advertised as a 3 row, but the radiator I received was a 2 row. I returned it and AM handled the return very quickly and nicely.

    Good Quality Radiator

The design and such of this radiator looks as good as the one I replaced, which lasted 12 years. So far, cooling is working in AZ we are seeing 113 degrees and my Stang is not overheating. On recommendations from the prior manufacturer, I will add an electrical ground from the radiator to the chassis. Water running through the aluminum will create a charge and without the ground, certain deposits will build up and crack joints.

high quality and rock bottom price

I was a little skeptical about the SR Performance radiator for my 89 Notch, but upon arrival and inspection of said part what I found was amazing to say the least. Thick core and hand welded tanks were done perfectly. No fitment issues or leaks. Radiator is of high HIGH quality. Throw in the fact its made in the USA and we have a winner ladies and gentlemen. I look forward to buying SR Performance products in the future and will not hesitate when doing so.

    Nice radiator for the price

I have not installed this radiator yet, so I can't speak to fitment yet. It took a while to get, as it was on backorder for some time. Quality looks good, and for the price, it seems to be comparable to other, more expensive radiators. Installing this should drop 10-15 pounds of weight from the front of the car.

Best radiator I could find at a reasonable price for my 1985 Mustang

After sending three different radiators back because of cheap construction or very poor fit issues, I found this radiator on-line. It was reasonably priced and appears to be well made. The top and bottom aluminum rails are a little thicker than the original radiator so getting the clips for the plastic fan shroud on at the bottom was problematic while trying not to damage the core but I finally got them on. The biggest issue I had was the fit to the original rubber mounting pads on my Mustang. The square flanges welding to the top and bottom of the radiator were not long enough so the radiator wanted to shift front to back about 1/2 inch especially at the top left side. Plus these flanges had sharp edges that could gouge the rubber. I fixed this issue by using some silicon glue to put short 3/8 inch bolts in the ends of the square flanges (two each on the left side, one each on the right side) and then the radiator fit snugly into the mounts. These mounts fit over the tank joints on the original radiator and the left side tank is wider than the right side tank so the rubber mounts are slightly different on each side. Anyway, once I got that issue sorted out, I feel this is the best radiator available at a reasonable price since no one seems to be making original copper/brass radiators for the older Mustangs and there are very few radiator shops left that rebuild old radiators especially in my rural location.
