Please read through the instructions carefully before starting this project. Take the time to get all the materials together as well as all the safety equipment.
Tools needed:
- 3/8" ratchet with extension
- 8mm socket
- 10mm socket
- 13mm socket
- Gasket scraper or large, flat-head screwdriver
- 1/2" standard wrench
- Rags
Removal:
- First remove the shift knob and set it aside if you plan on using it again. Be sure to keep the plastic bushing inside the shift knob. You will need it if you plan to reuse the stock knob.
- Using only your hands, gently lift the bezel, but be careful not to damage the wires to the cigarette lighter. Be sure that the clips stay on the tabs on the edge of the bezel and don’t fall onto the inner boot.
- Disconnect the wires to the lighter and set the bezel aside for installation later.
- Using a 10mm socket, remove the two bolts securing the stock shift handle to the stock shifter assembly. With little modification, the stock shifter can be reused with the Pro-5.0 shifter assembly.
- Using an 8mm socket with extension, remove the four screws and inner boot assembly. The fit was tight, so I removed the two screws securing the center console by the shifter and the two in the glove box, and slid the console back for more room.
- Remove any insulation material from both parts. Set the boot assembly and screws aside for later installation.
- Carefully remove the rubber boot from the stock shifter and set it aside for later installation.
- Using a 13mm socket, remove the four bolts and carefully lift the stock shifter assembly from the transmission. This shifter assembly just popped off, but if yours sticks, just re-install the stock shifter handle and use it to work the assembly loose.
- Clean the surface area of the transmission, being careful not to get any trash in the transmission area. There will be a little resistance as the ball of the shifter slides out of the receiver on the transmission.
- Carefully remove the plastic bushing from the bushing at the bottom of the shifter. Clean and set aside for later installation. This one was a little hard to remove, but I was still able to remove it with only my bare hands.
- Inspect the transmission for any trash or debris.
- Carefully press the plastic bushing from the stock shifter onto the end of the Pro-5.0 shifter.
- If purchased, install the gasket on the transmission housing. (Use RTV type gasket material as an alternative sealant material. Be careful not to get any sealant material in the transmission housing.
- Using a 13mm socket, mount the new Pro-5.0 shifter assembly onto the transmission housing, securing it with four bolts provided with the Pro-5.0 shifter kit. (The old bolts will not be used) Make sure that the gasket remains flat and even when tightening the bolts. (If using RTV type sealant, clean any excess material from around the edges)
- Use a ½" open end wrench and the instructions provided with the Pro-5.0 shifter. Set the stops before proceeding to next step.
- Install the stock rubber boot, following the instructions provided with the new Pro-5.0 shifter kit.
- Apply a bead of RTV sealant to the surface area of the inner boot plate.
- Carefully install the inner boot and plate. Secure it with the original four, 8mm screws.
- Reposition the center console and secure with the four screws removed earlier.
- If purchased, place gasket between shifter assembly and shifter. Secure with two bolts provided with the new Pro-5.0 shifter kit.
- Test shift pattern for smooth operation in all gears.
- Re-connect the cigarette lighter wires.
- Carefully install the bezel by pressing firmly to secure in place.
- Install plastic bushing into the shift knob and screw shift knob onto the new Pro-5.0 shift handle.
- GOOD JOB NOW LETS GO TEST IT!!
