    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Mike Wilson here from Bama custom tuning and AmericanMuscle.com, today we’re going to be talking about the Boss 302 intake manifold for the 2011/2012 Mustang GT. With the return of the boss to the Mustang lineup, GT owners now have access to some of the parts that make the boss 302 the most powerful and naturally aspirated Mustang ever. The boss intake is designed with short runners, which increases airflow, horse power and torque at high engine RPM. It’s made of a lightweight composite material, has a smooth black finish, and a modern boss 302 logo to help enhance the under hood appearance of your Mustang. It comes with everything you need to install it, the bolts, the gaskets, everything needed to make it a smooth and easy installation. The boss 302 intake manifold is a tune required part, so for that, we’re going to use a SCT SF3 flash device, with a 93 octane Bama race tune. Now we’re going to make a stock dyno run so we can get a baseline of horse power and torque. The car made 391 horse power, and 366 ft/lbs of torque. Now that we’ve got our baseline horse power and torque numbers, we’re going to install the manifold, which can be done at home in under an hours time using simple hand tools. Now that we’ve installed the boss 302 intake manifold, along with one of our 93 octane custom Bama race tunes, we’re going to make another dyno run and see what our horse power and torque gains are. The car put down 404 horse power and 355 ft/lbs of torque, while picking up 61 horse power and 43 ft/lbs of torque above 7000RPM, while minimizing our losses throughout the mid range. The boss 302 intake manifold is simple to install with hand tools you have at home in under an hours time, and you can pick up 61 horse power and 43 ft/lbs of torque.

Gain Serious HP and TQ. Bolt on up to 61 RWHP and 43 ft.-lbs. of torque to your 2011-2014 5.0 GT Mustang with a Ford Racing BOSS 302 Manifold. We dyno-tested this manifold in-house on our stock 2011 GT with nothing more than a JLT Cold Air Intake, so you can be confident you'll see some real performance gains from this manifold. This manifold is the perfect starting point for your list of power mods, especially if you plan on going forced induction.

More Air for More Top End Power. Your GT's stock intake manifold is designed to perform well at the low end, but it chokes off airflow at the top. This Ford Racing BOSS 302 "runner in the box" Intake Manifold features a short runner design for optimum flow at higher rpm's. This Manifold is ideal for peak engine power and sets the stage for future power mods.

Ready for Forced Induction. Tested for up to 2 bars of pressure, this BOSS 302 Intake Manifold is perfect for your upgraded heads, supercharger, and or cam'ed 4 valve motor. With this type of pressure rating, it can handle the increased air flow and deliver consistent power time and time again.

Calibration Required. Because the BOSS 302 Intake Manifold provides additional power through a different intake design (compared to the stock GT), reprograming of the vehicles computer (ECU) is required for operation. By reprogramming your Mustang's ECU, you will be able to realize the full power potential that this Intake Manifold has to offer.

Race-Quality Construction. Made of a high tech, lightweight composite and finished in stealth black, this manifold lives up to the BOSS 302 name, helping your Pony breathe better while improving under-hood appearance. The Intake Manifold features the modern BOSS 302 logo as well as an optional Ford Racing emblem (not pre-installed).

Bolt-on Installation. The BOSS 302 Intake Manifold was designed to bolt directly onto the heads of your 5.0L Coyote engine. No custom machining or fabrication is necessary for installation. This Manifold is compatible with your GT's stock fuel rails making for an easy swap.

Additional Hardware. If you plan to run your new Ford Racing BOSS 302 Intake Manifold with your GT's stock air box or an aftermarket Cold Air Intake, you will need to purchase the BOSS 302 Intake Manifold Installation Kit which includes all the additional parts necessary for proper installation. Please see options listed above.

BOSS 302 Strut Tower Brace. Seeing that stock and aftermarket strut tower braces designed for the GT will not clear the BOSS Manifold, it's recommended to upgrade to a genuine BOSS strut tower brace. A strut tower brace will help reduce unwanted suspension flex while greatly improving the handling of your Coyote powered GT. Please see options listed above.

Not CARB Certified. This Ford Racing BOSS 302 Intake Manifold is not CARB certified, therefore it is not legal for use in California or any other state adopting California emission standards when installed on a GT model. Not legal for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles; intended for off road use only.

Application. This Ford Racing BOSS 302 Intake Manifold is designed to be a direct fit service replacement for the 2012-2013 BOSS 302 Mustangs, but can also be installed on 2011-2014 GT Mustangs equipped with the Coyote 5.0L 4-Valve Engine. Intake gaskets are included.

Technical Note. When installing this Intake Manifold on a GT, some aftermarket Cold Air Intakes may require modification to the coupler or inlet tube for proper fitment. JLT and C&L Brand Cold Air Intakes will bolt-on with no additional modifications. Also, the BOSS Inlet Tube does not have provisions for an aspirator tube hook up that is common on automatic transmission equipped vehicles.

In the video it shows a baseline of 391 hp and 366 tq and after the bolt on and program it shows 404 hp and 351 tq. Where is the 61 hp and 43 tq gain???? It looks like 13 hp gain and 15 tq loss to me....... I am looking to pick up a 2012 Gt and would love to gain 61 hp from a bolt on, but don't see the gains here. Please let me know if I'm missing something...

        • I posted the same question before i saw this post, i was never really very good in Math but cmon. they show the video and your right its only 13 hp gain and loss on tg no thanks for $500

Should I get the installation kit? I have a Airaid CAI and the SCT tuner on my automatic 2012 GT, Im planning on also buying the BBK TB not sure yet if 90mm is what I need or 85mm, anyway there are reviewers saying that there is a valve that is no longer needed after the boss 302 is installed and since I don't have the stock CAI all I need is 2ft of fuel line... I want to do this right the first time -no way around- but I don't need half of the kit, why not to have what is only needed for my situation available for sale? I'm sure that a LOT of stangers have aftermarket CAI anyway... I'll be getting x pipes and long tube headers, also three fiber hood and a bunch of other stuff, all AM for sure!!!

        • I got the same setup in my 2011 GT( AirRaid CAI & SCT tumer) I also have a Ford Racing X-pipe and Flowmasters. I did not install a throttle body spacer or a larger throttle body. The Boss 302 intake manifold was alot easier than I anticipated. It is not nessesary to purchase the additional installaion kit. You will need to buy and use the extra 2ft.of fuel line and 2 hose clamps. I fabricated a simlpe aluminum bracket to mount that questionable purge valve. It's Awesome. I Love it!

Will this product fit the stock GT throttle body? or is a bigger one required?

        • The Ford Performance BOSS 302 Intake Manifold (11-14 GT) will require a bigger throttle body than the stock GT throttle body. The BOSS 302 Intake Manifold is designed to channel more air directly into the engine. In this case, I would recommend upgrading your throttle body to either the BBK 85mm Throttle Body (11-14 GT) item #56145 (www.americanmuscle.com/bbk-85mm-throttlebody-112gt.html) or the Ford Performance 90mm Throttle Body (11-14 GT) item #50326 (www.americanmuscle.com/frpp-90mm-tbody-1112gt.html).

So I've done a little research and read that the boss manifold really shines in the higher RPM range and peaks somewhere between 7200-7500 RPM for shift points but noticed when I got my specific bama tune for this new part after installation that the rev limiter was still at 7000 so I'm kind of confused. Shouldn't it be higher?

        • I noticed the same thing when I got my tune. Called Bama and they explained 7000 RPM was like a baseline they use and I could go into that button on the tuner and adjust it higher when I load the tune on the car. The guy I spoke with at Bama recommended I raise it no higher than around 7500 RPM because this about where the peak horse power is found (if you're talking a stock Coyote engine with just bolt on's). The Boss 302 Mustang can rev as high as 7750 RPM but its internals are beefier to withstand the increased RPMs. So going much higher than 7500 RPM is a waste, and much higher than that, you begin to endanger some of the engine components.

With the Boss 302 Intake Manifold installed what is the best throttle body to go with?

        • The throttle body that I would suggest would work the best with the Ford Performance BOSS 302 Intake Manifold (11-14 GT) is the BBK 85mm Throttle Body (11-14 GT) item #56145 (www.americanmuscle.com/bbk-85mm-throttlebody-112gt.html). The BBK 85mm Throttle Body is a great upgrade that is able to give you a RWHP of 10-15. Also, no additional tunes would be required when installing the BBK 85mm Throttle Body.

Is this design only for the high-end gains? Looks like it actually has a mild loss at the lower RPM ranges. Is there any real benefit to the 'daily driver' that just toys around now and again on the highway other than at the 6k+ rpm range? 2 answers

Will this intake manifold require another retune even tho I'm already running a 93 tune for my headers, high flow cats, Xpipe and airaid intake? Also will my airaid intake still fit properly since this manifold is a bit higher than factory. 1 answer

work with 3.31 gears? Okay ive heard so much mixed reviews on this part because of the "low-end torque loss" or whatever and one thing I noticed was it was recommended that for manual 5.0s that you have 3.73s. well I have 3.31s. would this intake not be good for me in this case? ive also seen a lot of controversy that 3.31s stay in the power band longer so it works just as good versus shifting more to just get o the power band quicker? need someone with real world 3.31 experience to help me on this one please! lol 2 answers

I've been fortunate enough so far to do all the tuning for my own mods (3.73 gears, wheel upsizing and JLT CAI) but I don't recall seeing a pre-loaded tune for new intakes or throttle bodies. 2 answers

            Boss 302!!!

Installed the manifold about a year ago now and I have loved everything about it. Yes you lose some low end torque but the mid-high gains are great. Also a very noticeable difference with how my exhaust sounded after the install. O/r X pipe and roush axlebacks. Easy install with the install kit as well, glad I went with the manifold!

            It’s worth it, I think!

For me, I could tell her performance gain. In conjunction with the cold air intake, have BBK 85mm throttlebody and a tune in via my SCT tuner (Which I don’t recommend). This gave me the performance game that I was hoping for. The only reason I gave it a three star rating for fit is because you must buy the accessory kit, which is not clearly notated in the install instructions which adds an additional $100.00 to this process.

            Great mod!

Let me start off by saying that I have read all of these reviews ten fold prior to purchasing this item. I had also watched many youtube videos and dyno numbers with this intake. I wanted to purchase it, but many individuals complained about the loss of torque. And the fact that the horsepower gain is at the peak over 7k. The manifold is probably my most favorite mod that I have yet put on the car. For cosmetic purposes, it looks seriously awesome underneath my hood. Secondly, the car pulls and breaths so much better than the stock intake. Make sure that when tuning the car that the rpm limit is set to at least 7500 since anything over 6500 it really shines. The car always felt weak at top end power levels. With this intake manifold, the mustang has as good top end power as a vette! But seriously though I have to say that the car feels stronger and sounds way more aggressive. I felt like you had to push the gas pedal a bit more at the very start. But after the car had learned the tune and allowed the monitors to be ready. The car felt way better and from that point I feel no difference from before. I have to say that if you are worried about purchasing this manifold due to torque loss, dont! The torque loss isn't noticeable, but the power is!! Especially that you are allowed to rev past 7k! One major con I have is that many people said you dont need the install kit if you have a cold air intake. In fact, you do need it for the purge valve bracket and additional cables etc. Although, I was able to do it differently and did not need to splice any wires or need the bracket. I do recommend that you get the install kit. Also, I had problems with the cold air intake since the throttle body is much farther out and had clearance issues. I know this review is long, but I wanted to let everyone know. If you are thinking of buying this intake just go for it. You will not be disappointed and there is a reason why its a hot item with over 100 positive reviews.
