Does this Axleback system and the Borla ATAK Axleback have a similar volume or is one significantly louder than the other?

  • This exhaust and the Borla ATAK exhaust will have similar sounds as mentioned with our loudness meter on the axle-back exhaust page. However in direct comparison, the ATAK exhaust will be slightly louder as the muffler chamber is smaller in size and shape than that of the FR500S axle-back exhaust.

do these have the ford logo on them and are allowed in all 50 states

  • The Ford Performance FR500S Axle-Back Exhaust (05-09 GT, GT500) will not have the Ford logo on them. This is however CARB legal for all 50 states. However if you have questions about restrictions, contact your state DMV for further information.

The best exhaust ever devised for the Bullitt!

This exhaust complements the stock Bullitt H-pipe perfectly for an aggressive sound that won't kill your ears on the highway. Once the engine warms up, it's almost as quiet as stock at idle, but when you open the throttle, it screams to life. The sound is absolutely perfect to my ears. It makes the Bullitt sound like an old 60's Mustang. It's raspy and raw, but still civilized. Installation was simple. I'm not a small guy, but even I was able to change the exhaust without even jacking up the car. That's right, no jack required. Don't get me wrong, it would have given me more room to work to use a jack, but it can be done without one in under an hour. The finish is OEM Ford Racing quality which is to say very high. The tips are the same as the stock Bullitt so you can't even tell it has been modified unless you look at the resonating chamber. This likely won't get you any extra power, but the sound blows me away. This is exactly what the Bullitt needed from the factory.

Loud when you want, quiet when you want, no drone!

Just put these axle-backs on my 2007 GT (V8, manual) which is otherwise completely stock. Normally, I don’t recommend Ford after-market products as other companies just seem to do it better, but I have to admit the folks at Ford-Racing got it right this time. I was looking for the perfect combination of loud, but refined sound and tolerable everyday driving (without the neighbors hating me) and this hits the spot! I tried SLP Loudmouths and they were just annoyingly loud (might as well just cut off your exhaust with a chainsaw and let it rip). The sound was raspy, extremely noisy and had an annoying drone. I also tried the Borla Touring exhaust which by comparison was very quiet (no louder than stock) and also had a very noticeable drone. I have heard that the Borla ATAK and S-Type also have drone, and I’m here to say that the Touring also has drone. What I thought originally was a beefed up exhaust turned out to be a quiet rear with a buzzing cabin especially around 1,700-2,500 rpm. I was surprised because Borlas cost a lot of money. This review of course is just comparing all of these axle backs to stock with no other modifications done. Maybe if you add in a different H-pipe/x-pipe or headers it might sound different but just stock Borla axle backs drone a lot. Now there came the Ford Racing FR500S axle-backs. When you start them up they are loud. They will wake the neighbors up, HOWEVER, by comparison, when I cold-started my stock-muffler mustang it was loud and woke the neighbors up so you should not use that to make a decision because they are all loud at the start. After the FR500s’s run a while you start to hear their true beauty. A beautiful refined V8 rumble, slightly louder than stock but deep and throaty. Now, when you hit the gas up to 2,000 they are still quiet with just a very nice throaty v8 rumble (AND ZERO DRONE). Go past 2,000 and these things open up. It’s literally like they have a side vent or something. All of a sudden she comes alive and lets out this deep throaty roar. It’s a sound that says “I am a V8, don’t mess with me” but it doesn’t say “I’m a 17 year old trying to show off”. On WOT (wide open throttle) it’s just an awesome deep, throaty growl that will give you a lot of attention but you can always tone it down by keeping around the 2,000’s. Finally, all across the board NO DRONE!!!! ABSOLUTELY NONE!!!! I can’t believe it! I mean it is literally quiet in the cabin and the noise you hear is coming from the tips of the exhaust like it should. SO, in summary, I use this car for daily driving. I don’t have the luxury of having a weekend car. I wanted something I could push the pedal with and have people look at me, but also something that if a cop is driving behind me or I want to listen to music or talk in the car I could also do that. In the morning, I start the car in 2nd gear and roll out quietly and then let it warm up and she quiets down. Perfect daily driver that says I’m a mustang and no drone at all! Hope this helps. I spent A LOT of time watching videos online and went through these carefully selected exhausts so I am writing this honestly because I know how frustrating it is to get that perfect sound.

    What an improvement

Just purchased my 08 GT500 and this was my first upgrade. I was apprehensive about going with these axle-backs but I'm so glad I bought them. No drone whatsoever and they aren't too loud at idle but when you give them some RPMs they really open up and sound incredible. Excellent product

    Great Sound!

Installed in about 25-30 mins. Fit perfect. Sounds excellent, although not as loud as other reviews had led me to believe. Perfect exhaust for daily driver, with stock H-pipe. Expensive but overall I'm very satisfied. Exactly what I was looking for. Dosent offend the neighbors at 2am either.

The perfect mufflers for my Shelby

After researching many mufflers I decided on the KR's (FR500S). Installation was straight forward and fairly easy. The driver's side rear hanger was a little more difficult than the passenger, but the install only took about an hour with a socket set. The tips on the mufflers are beautiful and the sound is exactly what I was looking for!! After hearing many mufflers on GT500s, I must admit that these sound the best to me. The fact that they are from Ford Racing is another plus.

    Awesome Sound!

This is a great product for sure. I installed them quickly and was very impressed by the sound and performance of the car. It is loud when you want it loud and zero drone when cruising at a normal RPM speed. I would recommend this product for any GT500 it really brings the car to life!!

Installed on a 2006 GT. Actual install took me about 1 1/2. My car only has 22K, so nothing was really bound up badly. The instructions posted on the AM product page were extremely useful! Followed them exactly and they were a great help. Only difference is the illustrated car is a bit different: the 06 only has two bolts on both center hangers (instructions had 3 on driver's side for an 08). Everything lined up pretty well. Sound difference was immediately noticeable from stock. Much deeper and pronounced. Car always sounded good at throttle, so even better now. And most importantly, NO DRONE. Had it out tooling at 60-70mph and no drone, just a nice low V8 sound. I spent the extra money to get a good exhaust and I'm glad I did. I titled this "M-5230-S" b/c that is the stock number on the box. From what I understand M-5230-S, FR500S, and "KR" mufflers are all the same. From what I've read, these are made by Borla but they had additional tuning done by Ford Racing, so not exactly the same. Very happy.

    Sounds Great!

There's not much to say that hasn't already been said about these axle backs. Previous posts are correct in that it's harder to get the old ones off due to their size. Still super easy to install, they and fit perfectly. They sound amazing. There's a really nice growl on startup, they quiet down on idle (but louder than my stock GTB's), and at about 2500rpm, they really come alive. I had already installed the FRPP shorty headers with the FRPP cut & clamp x-pipe, and I couldn't be happier with this combination.

Super fast shipping, I ordered Sunday night and had it Tuesday afternoon. My car car sounds 100% better over stock. Unbolting the hangers made it alot easier to do the swap. I recommended this exhaust to anyone who wants that muscle car sound but doesn't want to go over the top. Thanks again AM!!

    The perfect sound

I had a 2005 Mustang GT a couple years ago with Flowmasters on it, and while the sound was good, they droned terribly around 2200-2500 rpm. I did not want this issue with the 2008 GT I have now, so I did some research based on the internet and reviews here, and it paid off. The exhaust note is perfect, just the sound I was looking for. It has a similar sound to my previous Flowmasters after I had some JBA headers put on. So if you want a more complete exhaust re-worked sound by getting just 1 item, these mufflers are the way to go. Yes, they are a bit pricey, but the sound is worth it, and the best part is that they do not drone, at least nothing like the Flowmasters did. The Flows had a deep, headache inducing drone (especially once I redid the headers and mid-pipe) but this is non-existent with the FR500S. There is the other, more expensive Ford Racing mufflers, but I believe the only difference is the powder coating on the can and pipe connecting to the rest of the muffler, otherwise, I do not see a difference. Overall though the sound is a deep aggressive tone, especially at start up and stepping on the gas. When you are cruising and idling, the sound quiets down (after the initial fast-idling of startup) to a nice deep burble. Overall, I recommend them. After a long search for the right old-school but race car sound, the search has ended.

    True Muscle Car Sound

Very easy to install. When starting up the car for the first time after installing it surpassed my expectations! Not overly loud but throaty growl that grabs attention. Worth the little extra $, no drone and the tips look awsome sticking out the back.

WOW! This exhaust is EXACTLY what I was looking for! The note on it is amazing! There is absolutely NO DRONE what so ever. Cruising at 70-80 you can't even tell it's an aftermarket exhaust. Open your windows or get on it and it's a whole new ballgame. I'm getting complements everywhere I go on the look and sound of this Axleback. The first start with this on, I fell in love all over again with my car. Installation I thought I would be able to bang out in a half hour but it ended up taking a hour and a half. Getting the old mufflers off was the hardest part. Then these bad boys fit right in perfectly. There are no directions but its pretty self explanatory. All in all this is definitely the best sounding exhaust I have ever heard by far an I can cruise on the highway without even noticing a difference from the factory mufflers. Thank you American Muscle, Borla & Ford for delivering such an amazing product!

    excellent !!!

I just put these on my 09 GT, had bullitt axlebacks on which sound great under acceleration but I wanted more sound just cruising. I also tried the pype bombs which were just way too loud, way to much drone at highway speeds, and got followed for awhile by the Sherrif. The FR500S system is just right, I recommend it- and fit and finish are top notch-

    exhaust in Canada

got these shipped and picked up at a UPS depot on the border. I got them installed at shop....good thing as there was some torch work to get the stock stuff off. They fit great, are of excellent construction and sound fantastic. Great throaty sound on acceleration, but about the same as stock inside the car at cruising speed on the highway...no drone or resonance

Super fast delivery within 5 days of ordering and installed in just an hour, the tips lined up perfectly no adjustments needed. I installed them on my 2006 Mustang V6 that previously had the FRPP dual exhaust with GTB mufflers, they are much much louder at WOT and passed 1500rpm, but under 1500 and idle they are very quiet and burble like an old muscle car would. My car is a daily driver but they are not loud or obnoxious at all at 60mph cruise or driving normally around town. my final verdict: the best mufflers EVER!!!
