Review & Install Video

Hey everybody, I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com and this is my detailed review and dynotest of the JLT Cold Air Intake and VMP Tune combo, available for your '11 to '14 Coyote powered Mustang GT. So the JLT VMP combo is gonna be for the S197 owners out there looking to start modding with one of the top rated intakes here on the site, along with jumping into a premium custom tune option thanks to VMP. With this being said, it's also gonna be for the owners looking for the biggest gains possible using a combination like this, as opposed to just going with a cold air intake by itself. And speaking of those gains, let's talk about the numbers you guys might be able to expect using this combination on your own ride at home. Now, we already established our baseline run earlier today using our automatic 2011 GT behind me. We then went to work installing the JLT cold air and uploading the VMP tune, reran the car on 93 octane and here are the results. Baseline run using our automatic 2011 GT gave us 342 horsepower and 323 pound feet of torque at the rear wheels. With the JLT cold air and VMP tune combination, the car is now making 366 horsepower and 358 pound feet of torque. That's good for a peak gain of 24 horsepower over those baseline numbers and gains as much as 30 horsepower and 40 pound feet of torque underneath the curve. Now, guys, the big story with the JLT VMP combo here is the huge amount of torque underneath the curve that you're picking up with this combination. I mean the thing's picking up 40 pound feet of torque pretty much throughout the entire power band, so that's the numbers you're gonna feel, that's what's really gonna put you back in your seat with this thing, and along with a high-end horsepower of the JLT VMP combo, the car is gonna feel like a totally different animal. So now that you know a little bit more about the numbers, let's break down the components with this combo. All right, guys, let's first start with the JLT, then I'll get into the VMP custom tune along with the X4 tuning device. Now JLT, definitely one of the most trusted and recognizable names in the aftermarket intake world for your late model Mustang, and the 40 plus five star reviews on the site here are gonna reflect that. Now this is a tune only intake, guys, meaning you can't just bolt this thing up and go without the use of a custom tune, and that's mainly due to the fact that the JLT utilizes a very large mass airflow housing, 107 millimeters to be exact, currently the largest on the market for your stock intake manifold equipped GT. Now this is traditionally gonna make a little bit more power than those non-tune required intakes that do utilize a smaller mass airflow housing. Now I've been on record saying how much I really do enjoy the simplistic nature of the JLT, this thing is all business. They're not gonna use any flashy finishes or gimmicks to separate their intake from the others. Now one thing I really do enjoy about the JLT is that they incorporate the mass airflow housing into the actual intake tube here itself, and this is just gonna make for a much cleaner appearance overall. Now some other options on the site are gonna utilize an aluminum mass airflow housing joined together with the intake tube using some couplers, and there's really nothing wrong with that from the performance standpoint, but it just doesn't look as clean, in my opinion. Now in addition to the intake tube and mass airflow housing, the rest should look pretty familiar in the world of aftermarket intakes. Reusable oiled S&B high flow filter here. Guys, this thing is washable, reusable, it's gonna save you some money in the long run. They're also including this molded ABS heat shield, open element style, and it's gonna tap in nicely to your factory cold air ducting. In addition to that, guys, they are also including all the hardware and couplers needed to wrap this thing up. Now one thing I do want to point out, JLT actually throws in this foam plug insert to be used with the '13 and '14 GTs, basically to plug the hole in your hood vents or the heat extractors, and you are definitely gonna want to use this, guys, because otherwise water will get through those and then drip onto your filter here, causing some interment and issues. So big thumbs up for JLT for including that with their package. Now with all these extras and with the largest mass airflow housing on the market, I do want to point out the JLT is still reasonably priced and actually a little bit more affordable than most of the other options here on the site. Now that's pretty much gonna cover most of the basics with the JLT cold air. Let's quickly talk about the VMP custom tune and the X4 device. Now the VMP tune will definitely be one of your more premium tuning options available here at AM, and it's gonna offer the power increases as we already witnessed with our dyno results but with a focus on refine drivability and also improved reliability, and that's gonna be the big separating factor when choosing VMP over some of your other options here on the site or elsewhere. Now you are going to be receiving three tunes written by VMP ordered through us here at AmericanMuscle.com, a low, medium and high octane tune depending on what kind of fuel you have in your area, along with one single data log revision if needed. Now those tunes will be emailed directly to you from VMP for easy upload onto the X4 flashing device that you're going to be receiving from us here at AM. Now this thing is the tried and true workhorse of the aftermarket tuning world, and by far and away is the most popular device here on the site. This thing is pretty user-friendly in my experience and is packed with a bunch of useful features in addition to being able to handle most of the tuning duties. First and foremost, the X4 is gonna be used as a monitoring device, basically reading a bunch of your car's OBD-II data in real time, displaying it on the full color backlit LCD screen, all of which can be datalogged with a simple touch of a button. Now this is pretty much all of your OBD-II parameters, right? So you're getting your air-fuel ratio, intake air temperature, ignition timing, voltage, cool and [SP] temperature, things like that, and you can display up to eight of these values at one time on the screen here with the X4, display it in a vertical layout, or you can always turn the thing sideways for a horizontal or landscape mode. The X4 can hold up to 10 tunes at one time and can be used as your diagnostic tool, basically reading and clearing those diagnostic trouble codes or "Check Engine" lights whenever you need. Now this thing can also backup your factory PCM. So basically what that means is whenever you wish to return to stock, the X4 can handle that for you at any time. You are going to be looking at a two part install here, guys. Now as for the intake first, basic hand tools including a socket set, a few screwdrivers, a pair of pliers and a torques tool to remove the mass airflow sensor from your factory intake. All in all, about 20 to 30 minutes on the JLT. Moving on to the tune, well that's even easier, guys. A total plug and play deal here. Locate your car's OBD-II port, on the S197 it's located on the lower left-hand portion of the dash, plug this thing in and wait for it to power on. At that point, navigate to the "Program Vehicle" tab, choose the tune you wish to upload and then follow the onscreen instructions and you should be good to go. Now this is a very simple package to install, guys, so for that I'll call it an easy one out of three wrenches on my overall scale of difficulty. Anybody should be able to knock this one out in the garage or driveway. As for my final thoughts on this package, guys, well here's what I think. The JLT is a top-rated intake on the site and it's easy to see why, and when paired with a quality tune option like the VMP here, the improvements in both power and drivability are going to be really tough to beat given the price point. So be sure to learn more about this package and more ways to add power to your S197 here at AmericanMuscle.com.

I have a 2014 GT, with no engine mods as of yet. I have a couple of questions. By using this tuner, will I have to run 93 octane all the time? By loading the tunes made for my car, will this eliminate the throttle lag?

Ron11

  • Hello! With this VMP X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner w/ 3 Custom Tunes you don't have to necessarily run the 93 Octane tune. They are custom tunes so you can have them custom made for your intended use and they should be able to reduce throttle lag. However I do recommend the BAMA X4 tuner over this one, as BAMA is our in house tuning department. Also with the BAMA X4 you receive Free Tunes for Life!

  • This JLT Performance Cold Air Intake is designed to fit the factory 80mm throttle bodies for 2011-2014 Mustang GT's. The coupler is capable of stretching a little bit and should fit on a 84.5mm throttle body.

Review from JLT Performance Cold Air Intake (11-14 GT)

Easy mod. Excellent gains you can hear and feel

I was previously running my 2012 GT with a Custom Bama Race Tune. My only other performance mod was an axle back Flowmaster Super 40 series exhaust. When I installed this JLT intake and loaded the new custom Bama Race Tune, I could instantly hear the difference when I started the car. Once I got this thing out on the freeway and on some open back roads, I could feel the gains. I have not dyno'd yet but I will assure you the 20 to 30 HP gain is pretty accurate. A friend told me a CAI will also change the sound of the exhaust, which I was wanting to replace, anyways. After opening my Mustang up to full throttle a few times, I'm starting to change my mind on that. The custom tune I was running provided gains that were noticeable. Now, the JLT intake paired with a new custom tune makes this car drive and sound like a beast. Also, the installation was absolutely as simple as could be. I've never installed a CAI before or done much of anything on a car except oil changes and tire rotations. It took me 30 minutes maybe. Loading the new Bama Race Tune took longer than installing the intake. The install video on the American Muscle site, along with the included instructions, tells you everything you need to know.

    Great product

This product installed great into my car. I took out the factory equipment and everything lined up and fot great. The only thing you have to do is if you have an automatic you need to drill a hole in the pipe to add a place for one of the tubes to click into. I noticed power gains right away you just need to tune it before you drive it.

A must mod for your stang!!

This is the second JLT I've owned on my mustangs. Literally took me 15 mins to put on and fit was great. Cleans up the engine bay so much by getting rid of the stock airbox and sound tube. Had it dynoed and tuned right after with the GT500 axleback exhaust and resonators cutoff car made 408 to the ground. Like the title says a MUST mod for your mustang!!

Good power Easy install UNSTOPPABLE SQUEAL

I bough this with alot of other bolt ons for my 2011 mustang GT/CS. After initial install i noticed a squeal noise coming from under the hood and thought well maybe i just didnt tighten something completly or the filter was at a wierd angle. after hours of messing with it uninstalling and even removing the boss intake manifold and reinstall to find the problem i was to no avail. I searched forums and found a trend of people who noticed the same symptom and there only remedy was a new CAI. If you are one of the lucky ones maybe yours wont make such a noise im am currently in the process of hoping AM will allow me to 1 for 1 swap for a steeda wich will make me need to pay a little more and re tune but hopefully all will go well and that noise will go away!

Review from JLT Performance Cold Air Intake (11-14 GT)

Not what I was hoping for...ū

I gained just 15hp with this CAI and a Bama tune. The support guys tried to be helpful and suggested I pull a complete report. Pulling those reports is a giant pain! Then after hours of submitting reports and them reviewing my tune they might either find a problem and give me a few more HP or might tell me oh well. It's just not worth the hassle. Add to that, as it turns out, I'm not a fan of the awful sucking sounds this and most other CAI's make. I want to hear my exhaust not my intake. I hoped this one would sound good, it didn't, but I've gotten used to it after 9 months. Another downside for me if the car goes back to the dealer for service you really need to go back to a stock tune. This CAI can't be run without a tune. Next week I have to go to the dealer for service, for which they need to flash something to my car, so I am now forced to uninstall this and reinstall my OEM airbox. As a result my CAI probably won't be going back on. All that said the install and removal is simple. Took me just 15 mins to go back to stock. With the tune now gone I see just how great my Bama tune was. With their easy to use tunes for life I'm going to ask them to make me a new one without the CAI. Great support from AM and a good product from JLT, it's just not for me.

    Best bang for my buck

My husband asked for this for Father's day. It took him no time to put it in. After ordering an updated tune from Lund, he was off. No really noticeable difference in horsepower that we can tell, it is already close to 500hp, but can tell a little difference. My husband is happy, so I am happy.

JLT CAI Works great and LOVE the Sound

The first this I need to say is get your tune before you put this on. I put the JLT on one Saturday and couldn't drive my car till Monday because I had to wait until I got the tune. The CAI Really sounds great. Not much power gain from the feel of it but the Sound made it worth it to me. Install is very easy an anyone who can drive will be able to put one on.

The Biggest bang for your stang!!!

Like most of you reading this I didn't know which Cold Air intake to buy for my mustang. I wanted something that would add power, look good, and not be to bad on my wallet. I'm so glad I got this product. It actually added more horsepower then it said it would with a tune. And its a pretty fair deal considering you can buy another cold air intake for the same price but not get the same performance. Quick story my friend who also has a 5.0 same mods as me but different Intake wanted to have a friendly race on a back road needless to say he bought a JLT intake the next day.!

Tuner is great, tune is average

The x4 is a great tuner no doubt. Data logging is much more difficult than the ngauge though. As far as the tune? I'll say it's about average. I've had Lund, MPT, Bama and now VMP. You only get one datalog revised tune where as Lund will work with you till it's perfect regardless of how many datalogs you do. I'd put VMP one above bama as far as quality.

    WOW!

It took me about an hour to install this simply because it was raining on and off. If I did it again in nice weather I could easily do it in 30 minutes or less. The noise this thing produces is intoxicating! Adds a nice growl to the exhaust and a sucking noise when you get on the throttle. It looks pretty good under the hood but the performance and sound gains are by far the best part! I have a Pypes Axleback which I thought sounded amazing before this but not she just howls when I open it up. Great product!

Easiest way to make quick gains!

This is a tune only cold air intake! The tubing is huge so you have to pair with a tuner. I paired my intake with a wireless Bama tuner and the results are amazing! The sound alone is almost worth the purchase. This really turns the car into a living, breathing monster, and that's with a stock exhaust. Performance wise I noticed the most horsepower gains in the car's power band, without a huge noticeable difference in torque. I know the torque is there but you just don't notice it like the horsepower. The car just pulls so much harder around 4000-6000 rpm's. The fit is good, I did have some issue trying to get the filter itself to sit on the tubing where it was supposed to be. That's probably more my mechanical prowess though. All in all one of the best things you can do for your car! Must have!
