Hey everybody, I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com and this is my detailed review and dynotest of the JLT Cold Air Intake and VMP Tune combo, available for your '11 to '14 Coyote powered Mustang GT. So the JLT VMP combo is gonna be for the S197 owners out there looking to start modding with one of the top rated intakes here on the site, along with jumping into a premium custom tune option thanks to VMP. With this being said, it's also gonna be for the owners looking for the biggest gains possible using a combination like this, as opposed to just going with a cold air intake by itself. And speaking of those gains, let's talk about the numbers you guys might be able to expect using this combination on your own ride at home.
Now, we already established our baseline run earlier today using our automatic 2011 GT behind me. We then went to work installing the JLT cold air and uploading the VMP tune, reran the car on 93 octane and here are the results. Baseline run using our automatic 2011 GT gave us 342 horsepower and 323 pound feet of torque at the rear wheels. With the JLT cold air and VMP tune combination, the car is now making 366 horsepower and 358 pound feet of torque. That's good for a peak gain of 24 horsepower over those baseline numbers and gains as much as 30 horsepower and 40 pound feet of torque underneath the curve. Now, guys, the big story with the JLT VMP combo here is the huge amount of torque underneath the curve that you're picking up with this combination. I mean the thing's picking up 40 pound feet of torque pretty much throughout the entire power band, so that's the numbers you're gonna feel, that's what's really gonna put you back in your seat with this thing, and along with a high-end horsepower of the JLT VMP combo, the car is gonna feel like a totally different animal.
So now that you know a little bit more about the numbers, let's break down the components with this combo. All right, guys, let's first start with the JLT, then I'll get into the VMP custom tune along with the X4 tuning device. Now JLT, definitely one of the most trusted and recognizable names in the aftermarket intake world for your late model Mustang, and the 40 plus five star reviews on the site here are gonna reflect that. Now this is a tune only intake, guys, meaning you can't just bolt this thing up and go without the use of a custom tune, and that's mainly due to the fact that the JLT utilizes a very large mass airflow housing, 107 millimeters to be exact, currently the largest on the market for your stock intake manifold equipped GT. Now this is traditionally gonna make a little bit more power than those non-tune required intakes that do utilize a smaller mass airflow housing.
Now I've been on record saying how much I really do enjoy the simplistic nature of the JLT, this thing is all business. They're not gonna use any flashy finishes or gimmicks to separate their intake from the others. Now one thing I really do enjoy about the JLT is that they incorporate the mass airflow housing into the actual intake tube here itself, and this is just gonna make for a much cleaner appearance overall. Now some other options on the site are gonna utilize an aluminum mass airflow housing joined together with the intake tube using some couplers, and there's really nothing wrong with that from the performance standpoint, but it just doesn't look as clean, in my opinion.
Now in addition to the intake tube and mass airflow housing, the rest should look pretty familiar in the world of aftermarket intakes. Reusable oiled S&B high flow filter here. Guys, this thing is washable, reusable, it's gonna save you some money in the long run. They're also including this molded ABS heat shield, open element style, and it's gonna tap in nicely to your factory cold air ducting. In addition to that, guys, they are also including all the hardware and couplers needed to wrap this thing up. Now one thing I do want to point out, JLT actually throws in this foam plug insert to be used with the '13 and '14 GTs, basically to plug the hole in your hood vents or the heat extractors, and you are definitely gonna want to use this, guys, because otherwise water will get through those and then drip onto your filter here, causing some interment and issues. So big thumbs up for JLT for including that with their package.
Now with all these extras and with the largest mass airflow housing on the market, I do want to point out the JLT is still reasonably priced and actually a little bit more affordable than most of the other options here on the site. Now that's pretty much gonna cover most of the basics with the JLT cold air. Let's quickly talk about the VMP custom tune and the X4 device.
Now the VMP tune will definitely be one of your more premium tuning options available here at AM, and it's gonna offer the power increases as we already witnessed with our dyno results but with a focus on refine drivability and also improved reliability, and that's gonna be the big separating factor when choosing VMP over some of your other options here on the site or elsewhere. Now you are going to be receiving three tunes written by VMP ordered through us here at AmericanMuscle.com, a low, medium and high octane tune depending on what kind of fuel you have in your area, along with one single data log revision if needed.
Now those tunes will be emailed directly to you from VMP for easy upload onto the X4 flashing device that you're going to be receiving from us here at AM. Now this thing is the tried and true workhorse of the aftermarket tuning world, and by far and away is the most popular device here on the site. This thing is pretty user-friendly in my experience and is packed with a bunch of useful features in addition to being able to handle most of the tuning duties.
First and foremost, the X4 is gonna be used as a monitoring device, basically reading a bunch of your car's OBD-II data in real time, displaying it on the full color backlit LCD screen, all of which can be datalogged with a simple touch of a button. Now this is pretty much all of your OBD-II parameters, right? So you're getting your air-fuel ratio, intake air temperature, ignition timing, voltage, cool and [SP] temperature, things like that, and you can display up to eight of these values at one time on the screen here with the X4, display it in a vertical layout, or you can always turn the thing sideways for a horizontal or landscape mode.
The X4 can hold up to 10 tunes at one time and can be used as your diagnostic tool, basically reading and clearing those diagnostic trouble codes or "Check Engine" lights whenever you need. Now this thing can also backup your factory PCM. So basically what that means is whenever you wish to return to stock, the X4 can handle that for you at any time.
You are going to be looking at a two part install here, guys. Now as for the intake first, basic hand tools including a socket set, a few screwdrivers, a pair of pliers and a torques tool to remove the mass airflow sensor from your factory intake. All in all, about 20 to 30 minutes on the JLT. Moving on to the tune, well that's even easier, guys. A total plug and play deal here. Locate your car's OBD-II port, on the S197 it's located on the lower left-hand portion of the dash, plug this thing in and wait for it to power on. At that point, navigate to the "Program Vehicle" tab, choose the tune you wish to upload and then follow the onscreen instructions and you should be good to go. Now this is a very simple package to install, guys, so for that I'll call it an easy one out of three wrenches on my overall scale of difficulty. Anybody should be able to knock this one out in the garage or driveway.
As for my final thoughts on this package, guys, well here's what I think. The JLT is a top-rated intake on the site and it's easy to see why, and when paired with a quality tune option like the VMP here, the improvements in both power and drivability are going to be really tough to beat given the price point.
