    Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Stephanie with americanmuscle.com here with my review and Dyno test of the JLT cold air intake available for your 2012 and 2013 Boss 302. The JLT cold air is going to be for the Boss 302 owners out there or even the '11 to '14 GT owners who've installed a Boss intake manifold who are looking for a top rated quality intake that will provide some solid gains in both power and sound compared to the factory air box and will look good under the hood while doing so. I should point out that the JLT is a tune required intake, so you can't just bolt this thing up to your Boss or GT without a custom tune. I'll explain why in a minute. First, let's get to some Dyno numbers. We already established a baseline run earlier today using the '13 Boss behind me. We then went to work installing the JLT along with a custom tune as required, reran the car, and here are those numbers. Our baseline run with our 2013 Boss gave us numbers of 387 horsepower and 333 foot-pounds of torque at the rear wheels. With the JLT intake and the 93 octane VMP tune the car made 398 horsepower and 337 foot-pounds of torque, making for a peak gain of 11 horsepower and 4 foot-pounds of torque. By opening up some air flow in those upper RPMs we ended up seeing 15 horsepower at 7400 RPMs and 10 foot-pounds of torque at 7000 RPMs. Keep in mind that we did pair the intake with a tune. A lot of these gains can definitely be attributed to that tune. As far as curve gains, you can see right here that there isn't a whole lot going on in the graph. The factory intake is actually really efficient. Like I said, not a ton of curve gains, but all of the gains are going to be in the upper RPMs where the stock air box starts to become restrictive. With the numbers out of the way, let's dive into the JLT. In my opinion JLT is one of the most trusted and recognizable names in the cold air market for the late model Mustang. The numerous five star reviews on the site reflect that. As I mentioned earlier, the JLT is a tune required intake. That's due to the large 107 MAF air flow housing, currently the largest available on the site for the S197 Boss intake manifold. The larger MAF housing and intake tube should allow your Boss or GT to breathe easier and will traditionally make a little more power when compared to a no tune required intake because of the larger MAF housing and intake tube. JLT keeps more of a simplistic design with this intake. The intake is all business. They don't use any flashy finishes or any gimmicks to separate their products from the others. One thing I do like about the JLT design is that they incorporate the MAF housing into the tube itself which just looks cleaner in my opinion. Some other options use a separate metal MAF housing along with a plastic tube. There's nothing wrong with that from a performance standpoint, but it just doesn't look as nice to me. In addition to the tube and MAF housing, the rest should look pretty familiar in the world of aftermarket intakes - reusable high flow S&B oiled filter, an open element style heat shield which does tap into the factory cold air duct which is a nice touch, and finally all of the hardware and couplers to wrap everything up. The JLT will obviously work with a factory throttle body without issue, but it should also work with any aftermarket 85 millimeter or 90 millimeter throttle body without an issue as well. Another nice thing to point out is that the JLT includes a foam plug to insert into the portion of your GT's hood vent to prevent water from getting into your filter. Believe me, it's something that you're going to want to use as the filter does sit right below the lower portion of the hood vent on the driver side. Thumbs up to JLT for including this. Even with these extras and the solid construction and the largest on the market MAF, the JLT is still coming in at a very reasonable price point coming in right around the $300 price mark. A brief rundown of the install. Basic hand tools here, guys, including a socket set, a few screwdrivers, a pair of pliers and a Torx tool for the MAF sensor is really all you need to remove the factory intake and get the new JLT into place. I will say assembling the intake first outside of the car will make life a little bit easier along with installing the heat shield first. This is overall basic stuff that any novice should be able to tackle with ease. All in all this is going to be a 1 out of 3 wrenches on the scale and, guys, maybe about 30 minutes to an hour depending on your experience. As far as my recap, here's what I think. The JLT is one of the top rated intakes on the site and it's easy to see why. When paired with the required custom tune option, the power improvements are going to be tough to beat given the price point. Be sure to learn more about ways to add power to your Boss right here at americanmuscle.com.

Custom Bama Tunes specific to your vehicle. When you order a tuner from AmericanMuscle, you aren't just getting a tuner - you are getting the tuner and 3 dyno-tested custom Bama tunes:

    • Street (87-93 octane) - The Street tune is designed as a daily driver program that focuses in on increasing mid-range power. It does give up a few HP at higher RPMs, but that's why there is a Performance file. Automatic vehicles are further enhanced by making adjustments to the transmission's shift points and firmness.
    • Performance (87-93 octane) - The Performance program is designed to add power at 3000 RPMs and higher, focusing more on the top end horsepower and all out performance driving. Timing, fuel and throttle response settings are slightly more aggressive than the street tune. This is a great track tune but also works well for daily drivers that are looking for a little more "get up and go" than the street tune. The automatic transmission settings are the same as in the street tune.
    • Race (91 - 93 octane) - The Race tune will ensure the largest increase in vehicle performance. Using the highest grade of fuel available in your area is mandatory. This file is designed for "Race only Use" as the timing, fuel, and throttle response settings are very aggressive. in fact, the adjustments are so aggressive, that we do not recommend it for daily driving as it may cause your vehicle to try to jump out from a stop and easily spin the tires. Finally, with the automatics, we implement entirely new shift points and firmness settings to further enhance the all-out performance of the vehicle.

Nitrous (91-unleaded race gas) - Our nitrous option can be added to any of our previously mentioned tune options, but only for 91-octane unleaded fuel.

Easy to load; easy to restore. Not only are the custom tunes easy to load on your vehicle, it is just as easy to restore your factory settings. When you load your custom tune on the vehicle, the tuner automatically stores your vehicle's factory settings. To return the vehicle to its factory settings, just plug the tuner back in, select the option to restore the factory settings, and you're done.

Install Note: When installing the filter on the air tube, please be sure not to slide the air filter down too far on the tube as it may cause surging issues.

Just installed the JLT CAI on the weekend and loaded the Performance tune. I really like it so far but have a question about the Race tune before I install it. The traction control on the Mustang has saved me a couple of times, especially in the wet - does the Race tune turn off the "electronic nanny"? I actually am glad I have the nanny for day to day driving and don't want it disabled.

    • Your traction control system will still be enabled on the Race tune. We have modified the torque calculation and clutch protection logic as well as a few other changes specific to the race tune to unchain the performance of the car with racing/competition in mind. I would recommend giving it a try and then running the tune you prefer - either your Performance or Race tune.

      Must Have Upgrade

This is the second Bama tuner I have purchased and I'm not disappointed. I've got nearly 100k miles on my 13 GT and I'm just now getting around to a tune. The only aftermarket parts I have are mufflers and different size wheels, so I wasn't expecting a huge power increase. There definitely is a slight increase in power but the way it shifts is GREATLY improved. Throttle response is much better, it downshifts under less aggressive acceleration, upshifts feel much firmer. Bonus is that the speedometer was recalibrated for my new wheels and is now accurate (it's been running 4 too fast for tens of thousands of miles). Looking forward to adding a CAI and intake manifold and getting my new tunes. Lifetime tunes are a great benefit.

Custom tune is a waste of money.

My buddy and I both got 2014 gt mustang and got this Tuner with 2 custom tune. His car stalled so many times and wouldn't pass emissions. He reinstalled original CAI and tune and everything is fine. As for my car, at least once a week I got misfire and wouldn't passed emissions. I called AM and they told me the tune would pass emissions but that is not the case. I had to install stock tune to pass emissions everytime, twice. I finally put stock CAI and tune back permanently. What a headache.

Tuner Works Fine, Custom Tune Does Not.

I had two custom tunes written for my car, one was a 91 tune and the other a 93 tune - written by the folks at BAMA (Other than the ones that came on the advice). The custom tune that was written made the car misfire and feel sloppy at all RPM's, I figured it was my car so I did a fuel pressure check, changed coil packs, plugs, fuel filter - did nothing. I swapped to one of the tunes that comes on the device and my car woke up like nobodies business, I highly recommend the tunes that come on it and skipping getting a custom tune.

Review from Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner w/ 2 Custom Tunes (11-14 GT; 12-13 BOSS 302)

Things have changed since my 92 Mustang.

I've owned many different Mustangs over the last 40 years including a 77 Mustang Cobra that I turned into a wild beast, a 92 Mustang 5.0L LX Coupe that was known for being the fastest street car within a 100 miles of where I live and now I own a "Give Me a Ticket Please", Red, 2013 Mustang Prem. 5.0L with an automatic transmission that I've named Ginger. Now, don't laugh about me getting an automatic, rowing gears isn't as fun at my age as it use to be! Anyway, I just got this car for Father's Day 2018 with only 4299 miles on it. The car was great for just driving around and if you wanted a firmer shift for a little more spirited driving, all you needed to do is put the trans. in Sport Mode, which I found to be quite good. But, as with any real Gearhead, I wanted a bit more of everything all the time. So, I installed a 93 octane Performance Tune from BAMA. The minute I rolled out of the driveway I could feel improvement in the shift firmness and that was just in the standard trans. mode. I actually had a smile come up on my face as I drove up the road by my house. "If this is the Performance Tune", I said to myself, "I can't wait to see what the 93 octane Race Tune will be like". Anyway, after driving a few miles to a nice curvy back road that is a joy to play on, I shifted into Sports Mode and turn off the nannies so I could had full control of the car. All I could say was "OMG, this car feels like a Fire Breathing Dragon wearing horse shoes!". There was never any one change that I ever made that made such a big difference in performance on my 92 LX other than maybe going from 2.73 gears to 4.11s, that you would really notice! The car has now become a whole new beast to get use to over the next several days. Maybe in a week I will drop in the Race Tune for a few days but I'm thinking I wont be able to leave the Race Tune in except when I drive. Right now, I'm really not sure the wife would like driving the car with the Performance Tune installed. But hey, she hasn't driven the car yet, so if she thinks this is normal and decides to just not drive it like she did the 92 Mustang I had back in the day, who am I to argue?
