    Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Stephanie with here with my review and Dyno test of the JLT cold air intake available for your 2012 and 2013 Boss 302. The JLT cold air is going to be for the Boss 302 owners out there or even the '11 to '14 GT owners who've installed a Boss intake manifold who are looking for a top rated quality intake that will provide some solid gains in both power and sound compared to the factory air box and will look good under the hood while doing so. I should point out that the JLT is a tune required intake, so you can't just bolt this thing up to your Boss or GT without a custom tune. I'll explain why in a minute. First, let's get to some Dyno numbers. We already established a baseline run earlier today using the '13 Boss behind me. We then went to work installing the JLT along with a custom tune as required, reran the car, and here are those numbers. Our baseline run with our 2013 Boss gave us numbers of 387 horsepower and 333 foot-pounds of torque at the rear wheels. With the JLT intake and the 93 octane VMP tune the car made 398 horsepower and 337 foot-pounds of torque, making for a peak gain of 11 horsepower and 4 foot-pounds of torque. By opening up some air flow in those upper RPMs we ended up seeing 15 horsepower at 7400 RPMs and 10 foot-pounds of torque at 7000 RPMs. Keep in mind that we did pair the intake with a tune. A lot of these gains can definitely be attributed to that tune. As far as curve gains, you can see right here that there isn't a whole lot going on in the graph. The factory intake is actually really efficient. Like I said, not a ton of curve gains, but all of the gains are going to be in the upper RPMs where the stock air box starts to become restrictive. With the numbers out of the way, let's dive into the JLT. In my opinion JLT is one of the most trusted and recognizable names in the cold air market for the late model Mustang. The numerous five star reviews on the site reflect that. As I mentioned earlier, the JLT is a tune required intake. That's due to the large 107 MAF air flow housing, currently the largest available on the site for the S197 Boss intake manifold. The larger MAF housing and intake tube should allow your Boss or GT to breathe easier and will traditionally make a little more power when compared to a no tune required intake because of the larger MAF housing and intake tube. JLT keeps more of a simplistic design with this intake. The intake is all business. They don't use any flashy finishes or any gimmicks to separate their products from the others. One thing I do like about the JLT design is that they incorporate the MAF housing into the tube itself which just looks cleaner in my opinion. Some other options use a separate metal MAF housing along with a plastic tube. There's nothing wrong with that from a performance standpoint, but it just doesn't look as nice to me. In addition to the tube and MAF housing, the rest should look pretty familiar in the world of aftermarket intakes - reusable high flow S&B oiled filter, an open element style heat shield which does tap into the factory cold air duct which is a nice touch, and finally all of the hardware and couplers to wrap everything up. The JLT will obviously work with a factory throttle body without issue, but it should also work with any aftermarket 85 millimeter or 90 millimeter throttle body without an issue as well. Another nice thing to point out is that the JLT includes a foam plug to insert into the portion of your GT's hood vent to prevent water from getting into your filter. Believe me, it's something that you're going to want to use as the filter does sit right below the lower portion of the hood vent on the driver side. Thumbs up to JLT for including this. Even with these extras and the solid construction and the largest on the market MAF, the JLT is still coming in at a very reasonable price point coming in right around the $300 price mark. A brief rundown of the install. Basic hand tools here, guys, including a socket set, a few screwdrivers, a pair of pliers and a Torx tool for the MAF sensor is really all you need to remove the factory intake and get the new JLT into place. I will say assembling the intake first outside of the car will make life a little bit easier along with installing the heat shield first. This is overall basic stuff that any novice should be able to tackle with ease. All in all this is going to be a 1 out of 3 wrenches on the scale and, guys, maybe about 30 minutes to an hour depending on your experience. As far as my recap, here's what I think. The JLT is one of the top rated intakes on the site and it's easy to see why. When paired with the required custom tune option, the power improvements are going to be tough to beat given the price point. Be sure to learn more about ways to add power to your Boss right here at

Custom Bama Tunes specific to your vehicle. When you order a tuner from AmericanMuscle, you aren't just getting a tuner - you are getting the tuner and 3 dyno-tested custom Bama tunes:

    • Street (87-93 octane) - The Street tune is designed as a daily driver program that focuses in on increasing mid-range power. It does give up a few HP at higher RPMs, but that's why there is a Performance file. Automatic vehicles are further enhanced by making adjustments to the transmission's shift points and firmness.
    • Performance (87-93 octane) - The Performance program is designed to add power at 3000 RPMs and higher, focusing more on the top end horsepower and all out performance driving. Timing, fuel and throttle response settings are slightly more aggressive than the street tune. This is a great track tune but also works well for daily drivers that are looking for a little more "get up and go" than the street tune. The automatic transmission settings are the same as in the street tune.
    • Race (91 - 93 octane) - The Race tune will ensure the largest increase in vehicle performance. Using the highest grade of fuel available in your area is mandatory. This file is designed for "Race only Use" as the timing, fuel, and throttle response settings are very aggressive. in fact, the adjustments are so aggressive, that we do not recommend it for daily driving as it may cause your vehicle to try to jump out from a stop and easily spin the tires. Finally, with the automatics, we implement entirely new shift points and firmness settings to further enhance the all-out performance of the vehicle.

Nitrous (91-unleaded race gas) - Our nitrous option can be added to any of our previously mentioned tune options, but only for 91-octane unleaded fuel.

Easy to load; easy to restore. Not only are the custom tunes easy to load on your vehicle, it is just as easy to restore your factory settings. When you load your custom tune on the vehicle, the tuner automatically stores your vehicle's factory settings. To return the vehicle to its factory settings, just plug the tuner back in, select the option to restore the factory settings, and you're done.

Install Note: When installing the filter on the air tube, please be sure not to slide the air filter down too far on the tube as it may cause surging issues.

    • With any of the tuners we are able to turn off the CEL for deleting the cats but this can cause issues with getting through your emissions testing.

I have a 2013 Boss 302 with the red TracKey. I really like the TracKey functions especially the lopey idle. How will this tuner work for me? Will I still be able to keep the lopey idle and make gains like the GTs do? Does Bama already have Boss 302 specific tunes created and verified on the dyno? Are there any specific Boss 302 parts you would recommend with this tuner? Would a different tuner be better for my application? Currently the Boss 302 is stock. Thank you!

    • You can definitely use the Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner with your 2013 BOSS 302 with the TracKey! BAMA can generate tunes for your application without changing any setting with your TracKey including the loopy idle. If you decide to go with a tuner, custom tunes can be generated but you would have to use your regular key when utilizing the tune. If you'd like to use the Red TracKey, you would need to flash your computer back to factory settings and then use the TracKey to be able to use that function. There are no specific items but we would suggest performance parts like a Cold Air Intake or an exhaust to boost your performance.

I have a 85mm BBK throttle body with my boss 302 manifold. What makes this intake different from the regular JLT intake? And will this one fit my Throttle body

    • The JLT Performance Cold Air Intake for the Boss intake has the couplers designed specifically to fit the Boss Intake's revised throttle body angle. The coupler is designed to accommodate larger aftermarket throttle bodies, as well as the OEM throttle body.

Review from Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner w/ 2 Custom Tunes (11-14 GT; 12-13 BOSS 302)

      Free tunes for life?

Within the description on your site for this tuner, it say to contact Bama for the free tunes for life when I want to have another tune created. I did contact Bama and they told me I have to find a local dyno shop that does tuning and go there for my tune? Your site says all you have to do is contact Bama and they'll create the tune and email to me. So.....what is the process?? I am a bit disappointed that I was told to find my own shop. Are they contracted by Bama to create my new tune(s) at no cost?? I'd like someone from AM to respond and explain the process.

Review from Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner w/ 2 Custom Tunes (11-14 GT; 12-13 BOSS 302)

      Exceeded all expectations

I put in an Airaid CAI 2 years ago but didn't do any tuning; at the time I didn't have the interest. Plus, I didn't want to lay out that much money at once. However, recently the tuning bug hit me and I've been itching to tune my GT. I was all set to order the X3 but I saw the X4 had just been released and I figured for the couple extra bucks, there was no question to get the X4. The screen is very nice and crisp to look at. It is plenty bright whether you are in the dark or in direct sunlight. The wireless feature is quite handy as a lot of times, the USB cable isn't right there when you need it. The interface is very user-friendly and intuitive. I was sure to update the unit's firmware right away as that was recommended upon first opening the box and examining the contents. As for the tunes, I am floored by the amount the GT has woken up. I loaded the 93 Performance tune and just night and day difference over stock. I immediately noticed just pulling out of my street! Once I got on the highway, well all bets were off and in a split second I was over 80mph. Even my fiance was impressed by the difference! Once again, AM was great in answering my email questions and getting my X4 to me fast and Bama did an awesome job with my tunes. Thanks so much and I will no doubt be recommending and praising both of you.

      Threw away $400

First off let me say the techs who tried to help me were great. The tuner itself is fine but the Bama tunes are hit or miss and are cookie cutter tunes written on a test mule and may not work on your particular car. I went back and forth for close to four months with bama performance trying to get the tunes to work with my 2013 GT with no luck. I ended up having to go to injected engineering in kennesaw GA to get my car straighten out from the mess the bama tune did on my ecu. I ended up spending a full day of missed work and $800 on a custom dyno tune fixing what a $400 tuner caused to my car. Lots of guys claim they had good results with this tuner but I didn't and have heard a lot of others having issues as well. It may work for you but realize there's a good chance it may not and you will be stuck with a $400 paper weight like me.

      This Tuner Is Amazing

At first i was very unsure of getting a tuner 1. because my car doesn't even have 5 thousand miles and 2. because well would it really help my performance that much for the price? after some time I caved and ordered it. A birthday present to myself. best decision I could have made. took maybe 15 minutes to do everything. took it out right after, i noticed a difference immediately. Then when I took it out on a back road to see what changed through the power band it was night and day. getting this product is worth every penny!

This tuner is awesome. The size is perfect for mounting in your vechile for data logging and monitoring. I paired the tuner with BBK long tube headers, BBK offroad x-pipe, Roush axlebacks, and Steeda CAI. The seat of the pants feeling is awesome. Tuner is worth every penny and I highly recommend it. A+ for ease of use and a thumbs up for Bama's awesome tunes!

      What are you waiting for?

I have a 13 GT convertible with automatic transmission. It is completely stock. When I got it, I loved the power but when very underwhelmed by the soft shifting. I figured I'd try a tune, even though my car isn't modded, to hopefully firm up the shifts. I ordered the X4 and two tubes on Tuesday night, and received the tuner with tunes installed on Friday. The tuner itself is small and light. As long as you have a wifi connection, you can update it without plugging it into your computer. This was very convenient. Loading the tunes into your car is easy, too. Simply plug the X4 into your OBDII port and follow the onscreen instructions. It took about 15 minutes total. Running the 93 Race tune, I was immediately impressed by the much improved throttle response and significantly firmer shifts. Now, with the stock pirellis and 3.15 gears I spin the tires all the way through first gear even without opening it up all the way. If you're on the fence about this, take it from me. You won't be disappointed.

      SCT X4 Programmer

I was looking to add some extra muscle to my GT and bought the X4 as soon as it became available. I had read all the reviews I could find and even talked to the folks at SCT. The new X4 is by far the best programmer to date. Its ease of use and the new wifi capability made installing firmware updates a breeze. It can also be mounted in the car and coupled with the data logging ability, provides a easy to see read out. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a small, light, and powerful programmer.

      Good Tuner, Great Support!

Received my X4 fast due to quick shipping from American Muscle. The tunes were just as I had ordered but my speedometer was off by 10mph. An email to Bama Performance/American Muscle had a new tune out to me the same day to correct the problem, which turned out to be on my end and not the tune. I purchased my '14 GT used with 5k miles on it and have never seen a sticker or build sheet for it but it turns out that it was ordered with 3.73 gears instead of the factory default 3.31's. If anyone else has a problem with their speedometer on a 13/14 model, inside the driver's door, you will find a two-letter axle code: BB - 3.73 ratio CC - 2.73 ratio DD - 3.55 ratio GG - 3.31 ratio YY - 3.15 ratio Thanks again to American Muscle for sending me a tune that allowed me to find my issue!

Load the Bama Custom Tunes and you will definitely feel the difference on the butt dyno. I know the 91R Cam tune really let my car Giddy Up Go and the idle just sounds like good old American Muscle .This tuner will really wake your pony up and let it out of the stable, it's a great place to start if you want to get a little more out of your mustang for a decent price and let's face it you pretty much need one of these for most major bolt ons so why not start here .

Review from JLT Performance Cold Air Intake (11-14 GT w/ BOSS Intake; 12-13 BOSS 302)

      Great product! Easy to install

I bought this intake along with the Boss 302 manifold for my 2012 GT, the fit perfectly together. Installation was a breeze with step by step instructions. It only took an afternoon to install both. With a Bama tune this setup completely woke my car up! It's a whole new feel and there is no loss of power in the low rpms. This is a great starting point for adding big power upgrades later. I would definitely recommend this to anybody.

      Great product

Took me around 30 mins to get it on, very easy installation. i got a tune from SCT/Bama at the same time so i cant say how this preformed alone but my car does respond and hit harder all around.

Review from JLT Performance Cold Air Intake (11-14 GT w/ BOSS Intake; 12-13 BOSS 302)

      Great sound

It was between the JLT and the Steeda for me since both offer the most gains. I've ran steeda before and it really is amazing, but I knew I wanted to buy the Boss 302 intake manifold, so I went with this (Steeda offers fitment for the boss 302 manifold but you would have to contact them directly). YES you do need this CAI if you are going to install the boss 302 manifold. I had called before and they told me I needed the other JLT CAI for the GT and the coupler is too small to fit so I had to wait another week for install. Just fwi... Between the two prices for the V8, I'm giving it to JLT for the best bang for buck. LOVE the whistle it makes, easy fitment, NO issues. Wish they offered different colored cones but that's not an issue. Install took 5 minutes tops. I think they claim to have a 20 hp gain but I don't think so (maybe with a dyno.). I would say with a bama tune, you're looking at an extra 7-8 horses. STILL noticeable gains, and great price.

Review from Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner w/ 2 Custom Tunes (11-14 GT; 12-13 BOSS 302)

      Super Fast!

Once I had the tuner out of the box I had my car re-tuned within 10min. Bama takes several questions about your car and creates a custom tune just for your car.

Review from Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner w/ 2 Custom Tunes (11-14 GT; 12-13 BOSS 302)

I really didn't want to be that guy because I love this site, it's more of an issue with Bama support rather than AM, and I thought how could I go wrong with all of these great reviews. However, I uploaded my 93 performance tune on my 14 GT and ever since then, I have been having minor problems, which I expected to an extent, as a tune is very detailed and specific to each car. I can notice the increase in HP and TQ. As far as throttle response and power distribution throughout the RPMs, it varies. When I am at idle and press the gas to give it a little rev, it is a hit or miss whether it will actually rev as expected or nearly bog out. Same goes for when I press in the clutch at any speed and hit the gas to rev match, it might rev as expected or bog out and cause a huge engine brake from downshifting without matching the revs. That is the biggest problem. While in a gear and staying in it, the throttle response is certainly better than stock. When I contacted Bama support, I received a quick reply on a Saturday(awesome I thought) with instructions on how to data log, which I understood had to be done and I completed and sent the following Monday. However, since then I have been trying to send the file, and ready to do whatever I need to do to resolve these issues. Unfortunately, I am only receiving 1 maybe 2 responses a DAY trying to transmit this data log, confirm they received, get updates, feedback, etc., which is very frustrating for car guys just trying to fix the issues ASAP. I hope Bama will be able to fix these issues so i can change this review, but until then I have to say, I am disappointed as this is one of my first performance mods I have purchased for my GT.

      It's Alive!!!!

Completely awakens the beast! Throttle response is 10x better and a significant power increase you can feel through entire rpm band! I pared it with an airaid CAI and couldn't be happier!! Still haven't tried the race tune but I'm told most ppl use it for daily driving, and that's where the most significant power gains are at..
