Review & Install Video

Hey everybody. I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my detailed review of the Kooks Off-Road Long Tube Headers 1-7/8 inch in diameter available for your 2015 and up Mustang GT. Top quality materials here, guys, 304-grade stainless steel, impeccable welds, all made in the USA. There's really not a lot to nitpick there. This particular long tube is of the off-road variety meaning it's not going to have any cats which is typically going to deliver the biggest power in sound gains. They do include the cat-less portion of the downpipe or the factory connect here and what that means is this is going to hook up to your factory cat-back exhaust system or even your aftermarket exhaust system as long as it hooks up like a factory style. Now in browsing long tubes here at AM, you are going to stumble across a few different options and, honestly, they are all quality. Kooks. Stainless Works, American Racing, you're really not going to be making a bad choice no matter what you go with. Pricing wise, they're going to all fall somewhere between the $1000 to $2000 range, and the Kooks are going to land smack dab in the middle of that. Now let's face it guys, long tubes, they're not exactly a small investment but the results are worth it. Expect anywhere from 15 to 25-wheel horsepower depending on your tune in addition to that awesome change in your exhaust tone. Now, this is a 1-7/8-inch header here guys, and I think you're going to find this is the most commonly offered size for the long tube headers for your S550 Coyote-powered GT. I should point out, however, that Kooks does offer a slightly smaller runner in the 1-3/4-inch version of this header and we can discuss the differences in sizes till we're blue in the face, but here's what I'm going to tell you. Take my recommendation and go with the 1-7/8-inch header here. It's going to be just fine for your naturally aspirated light bolt on application. But if and when the urge comes for more power, and believe me, it oftentimes does whether it's through boost or otherwise, you're going to have plenty of header to grow into. All right guys, so let's pick this thing up. I'll actually walk you through it a little bit and show you what you're going to be working with here with the Kooks long tube. Let's start, first off, three-inch merge collector, but what you can't see is the scavenger spike that's located inside of this. It's Kooks' patented system. They claim it's going to help increase exhaust scavenging improving your exhaust flow in the process and improving your performance. Now one big thing I really like to point out here with the Kooks long tube is that all the primaries here one piece, mandrel bent from basically the flange all the way down to the collector. Now that's really huge because a lot of times on lesser brands, lesser quality headers, they'll use a bunch of small pieces of runner welded together to make these bends, but they can often crack because welds are sub-par. Not the case here with the Kooks. As you might expect, all the welds are completely beautiful and they even go as far as smoothing them out here on the flange side at the head just to help reduce any exhaust turbulence. Another thing that gets a big thumbs up for me, guys, is what Kooks includes in the package. We're looking at top of the line cosmetic exhaust gaskets, stage eight locking header bolts, and factory style O2 extensions. Again, stuff that you might not expect, but it is nice to see when you're forking out top dollar for a set of headers. As for the install, well again, guys, not going to sugar coat this one. It's a full three out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter. We called it a full day here on the site and that sounds about accurate. It might even stretch into two days if you want to leave yourself a weekend, probably the safe bet. You can do it on a jack stand but, believe me, doing it on a lift is going to make life a whole lot easier. And at the end of the day, if all this sounds like a big no thank you, spend the money, have them installed by your local shop. You can thank me later. I really have nothing negative to say about the Kooks long tube headers in the off-road variety. The quality is completely top-notch. Materials, welds, everything is completely on point. Guys, if you want to read up on some more customer reviews, feel free to do so here on the site. I'm Justin, thanks for watching. And for all things Mustang, keep it here at AmericanMuscle.com.

More Horsepower and Torque. A set of Kooks Long Tube Off-Road Headers will greatly improve the performance of your 2015-2017 GT Mustang. Kooks Headers feature an integrated venturi style collector that increases exhaust scavenging and reduces turbulence. As a result, it will improve your S550's exhaust flow over the restrictive stock manifolds, boosting your Pony's horsepower and torque numbers.

Quality Construction. Kooks Long Tube Exhaust Headers are manufactured from 1-7/8" mandrel bent 304 stainless steel tubing that merges into 3" collectors with scavenger spikes for superior airflow. These headers feature a leak-free ball and socket design for optimal performance and a better than OEM fit.

Recommended Upgrade. To realize the full power potential that these Long Tube Off-Road Headers have to offer, AmericanMuscle recommends a Bama custom tune with a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for proper operation.

Application. These Kooks 1-7/8 in Long Tube Off-Road Headers are specifically designed to fit the 2015-2017 5.0L GT Mustangs and is a direct bolt on to the stock exhaust system.

Technical Note. Not legal for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles; intended for off road use only. These Headers are intended for left hand drive applications only.

I’m staying naturally aspirated and plan on getting custom Flowmaster Super 10 turndowns. Is this too much header, would I be better off going with the 1 3/4” headers?

  • The Kooks 1-7/8 in. Long Tube Off-Road Headers work well on engines with a good amount of modifications. For a N/A car, we typically like to see the car equipped with a Cold Air Intake, Tune, Throttle Body, and Intake manifold if using 1 7/8" headers, and without all of those mods, we prefer to see the 1 3/4" to help promote low rpm power and throttle response.

Does this pair up with a borla s type catback 2.5” resinator delete with x pipe without adapters or modifications???

  • The Kooks 1-7/8 in. Long Tube Off-Road Headers will bolt right up to the Borla Stinger S-Type 2.5 in. Cat-Back Exhaust without any adapters or modifications, both the Cat-back system and headers are meant for stock applications and would pair together perfectly.

    Expected nothing less

Made with extreme precision and tight tolerances. Almost like pieces of art. Kit came with all nuts, bolts, locks, clamps, cometic gaskets, and an extension for front 02 sensor (passenger’s side). Ended up using OEM gaskets (only 16,000 miles on mine) and hardware, as recommended by some others who have put sets on multiple 15-17’s. Had an issue with my top 2, rear most studs on the driver’s side. They would not allow the header flange to draw close to the exhaust ports on the heads without damaging the primaries. Checked to make sure the studs were seated and still wouldn’t clear primaries. Guess they were too long for those spots; buddy has installed 2 sets and never had this issue???? Not Kook’s fault, as they supply Stage 8 hardware. Ended up using 2 of those, with supplied locks, for the trouble spots. Also, had to use clamps and adapters from my 3” Corsa Cat Back to make the connection to the Kooks headers. Not a “direct” connect like American Racing Headers. You have to use your Corsa 2.5”-3” adapters and the sliding clamps from stock exhaust to make it all work. Or purchase Kook’s Full 3” adapters Product ID : 11513010, for $62.57 each. Installation took 2 slowly paced days on a 4 post lift. Probably could have got it done in one 12-14 hour day if we didn’t take breaks and stop for lunch and dinner. There are videos on YouTube showing it done on jack stands, but I’m so glad we had a lift. Removed the battery box and air box, BUT DID NOT REMOVE the motor mounts. Removed motor mount brackets ONLY (the ones attached to the engine block) and had no clearance issues whatsoever. Don’t waste your money on the Milwaukee cordless ratchet you see in install videos...bought one and it didn’t save me any time. Flex, ratcheting wrenches, lots of extensions and stubby ratcheting wrenches. Good Luck! Thanks American Muscle for the incredibly fast 2 day shipping on these awesome headers.

    2017 GT Mustang

I was looking around for a few months before deciding to picked these Kooks Headers up. I wouldn’t go with any other pair If headers. These come with new gaskets, O2 sensor extension and header bolts. The quaintly of construction is out of this world! I am very happy with this purchase and would not go with any other brand. I paired this up with Corsa Extreme 3” Mufflers, and Helix Xpipe. These will fit together without buying anything else with no problems. I spent a full weekend on floor jacks doing this setup with some friends in the driveway. The stock stuff little rough getting off but if you take your time and do it right will have no problems as well as having all the tools. I recommend this product to anyone who is wanting to upgrade there 2015-2017 GT Mustang. The power with even a bama tune is out of this world! The power gains is amazing paired with the JLT CAI as well. I smoke tires 1-2 and beginning of 3rd gear on 305’s Nitto G2 tires. Once tires are warmed up though it grabs pretty well for Street tires. Don’t even hesitate if you have the money to get this setup I have paired with Corsa Extreme catback exhaust. It’s so loud and gives that deep raspy growl instead of that deep rumble. It sounds really exotic and turns heads everywhere u drive! I get compliments everywhere I go and the car runs super healthy! I put these on with only 5,600miles on the car and this thing smokes newer corvettes that are stock anyways. Highly recommended and also there is not to much drone in the car but who cares when ur deleting cats and going with Corsa Extreme mufflers to make this car scream!

    Get ready to turn heads

After putting these OR headers in my mustang its breathing a lot better now. Highly recommended you tune your car afterwards so you're not running rich since you're taking in more air. These headers have been turning heads left and right ever since slapping these on so if you're not looking for attention I wouldn't get these. Absolutely love the sound now paired up with a corsa extreme cat back.

    Great sound

Every thing was in the package. Looks good sounds good. Very hard to install if your doing it yourself. I did it by myself on jack stands in a garage. Make sure you have plenty of different length wrenchs to get in all the tight spots. I recommend you have a shop install them if you have the extra cash to save yourself a headache. Very happy with the product !!

    Kooks quality

Not having performed the install myself I will only comment as to this products quality. Although my trusted mechanic did comment all went relatively well. Anyone who has been around and handled headers even briefly can immediately tell upon sight alone AM has chosen this product wisely.

    HOLY BOMB TUBES BATMAN!

These headers are loud! I have them paired with the MBRP street cat back. The only part i do not like is how the little 80 degree connecting pipe necks down to 2.5". With the kooks catback it has the 3" pipe on the X or H pipe. I know it has minimal effects on the power but come on kooks.. I payed almost $1600 on the headers. Over all i am very happy with the setup. Brandon Dederita tuner specialist there at AM added a ghost cam to the tune and it sounds fantastic. I onstalled these on jackstands over the corse of two days. I will never do that again. I am sore in places that I didnt know muscles existed.

Product is very good quality and fitment is spot on, install took about 10 hours, We put them on at home with no lift and just a jack, very tight to get to in some spots with the tight engine bay, but we managed. It is well worth it, sounds amazing paired with corsa extreme catback exhaust, I am waiting on my intake and tune to be installed so hopefully will have noticeable power increase.
