Review & Install Video
Hey, everybody. I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com. This is my review of the MAC Catback Exhaust System with X-Pipe, available for your Fastback 2015 and up Mustang GT.
All right guys, so who is this system going to be for? Well, it's going to be for the 2015 and up GT owners out there who are in the market for a full cat-back system, would prefer that full stainless construction, and would like to keep things underneath that $1000 mark. At the time, that is going to limit your selections here at AM to the MAC system I have with me here in this video, also their Pro Chamber exhaust, in addition to the Flowmaster systems which do barely sneak in there. And finally the MBRP systems which, at this time, are the most affordable here on the site.
MAC, of course, no stranger to the Mustang world. They actually are one of the few companies that got their start supporting primarily the Mustang. As a matter of fact, their first product they really started producing was a set of equal length long-tube headers for your 5-liter Foxbody way back in the day.
All right guys, I'm a function over form person 99% of the time. With that said, we all know the main purpose of an exhaust system is to remove those exhaust gases and sound good while doing so. As we all heard at the beginning of this video, the MAC certainly delivers in that department. However, I wouldn't be doing my job as a reviewer if I didn't give you a few nitpicks with this system. My biggest nitpick has to be the finish appearance of the MAC system, mainly the mufflers here. The overall quality of the materials, the welds themselves look a little rough, maybe a little unfinished. Not what you might expect when you're dumping $800 or $900 into a cat back. And certainly not something you might expect putting on your $30,000 or $40,000 sports car.
That being said, this is an exhaust system. It is going to live underneath the car. And for the most part you're not going to see this system with the exception of those tips, and it does sound really good. A big part of that is the included X-Pipe here, which typically would give you a little bit more rasp. But along with these Flowpath mufflers here from MAC, it does actually deliver a more deep tone. It still has a solid volume, so for three, maybe even creeping up on a four out of five on my "one to wake the neighbors" scale. It is loud but the total combination here keeps things at a sane level.
Getting into the construction here with the MAC catback, we are again talking about a full stainless steel system, 409 grade to be exact. That does include the two and a half inch mandrel bent tubing and the included X-pipe which we talked about earlier, leading into the Flowpath mufflers here from MAC and out these rather large four inch polished tips. Even though these mufflers do look like a traditional chambered muffler, they're actually a straight through design muffler by nature. So it is going to help you out with a little bit more performance and increase your volume overall.
One of the nice things about this cat-back, or most catbacks for your 2015 and up GT for that matter, is the ease of install. Easy one out of three wrenches here guys on the difficulty meter. Not really hard. No cutting needed whatsoever, direct bolt on install. And you should be making some noise in about an hour or two from start to finish. You can accomplish this using some basic hand tools. I will say an extra set of hands will not hurt with this install as there are a few pieces involved. Again, you are underneath the car, so make sure you support it safely with your jack and jack stands, race ramps or maybe even a lift.
All right guys, so even though I might not be the biggest fan of the looks or build quality of this exhaust system at least on the surface, it certainly delivers where it needs to. And that is, give your S550 a really nice aggressive tone for a price that's far less than some of the other options available here on the site.
