So if you own an '11 to'14 5-liter powered F-150 and you're looking for, hands down, one of the most affordable dual exit exhaust upgrades but more importantly, you want one of the deepest sounding and, in my opinion, one of the most classic sounding exhausts, then you found it. I'm talking about the MBRP 2-1/2 inch Installer Series dual exhaust system in the rear exit configuration. At around the $500 price point, there will not be an option that is less expensive than this one and if they are, they will generally be a single exit configuration or they'll ditch the resonator entirely or they'll have a more simpler muffler design. Now, as far as volume goes, this thing is pretty healthy. I'd give it a three out of five on my loudness meter although I'm happy to say at this volume and tone, there is little to no drone inside the cab to speak of. Yes, there is some volume inside of there. You can hear that 5-liter motor going to work but you don't get any of those crazy vibrations or resonance noises that you kind of feel in the drums of your ears. So that's nice and that's partly thanks to that rear exit configuration, pushes the sound all the way out the back of the truck. Now if you wanted to get a system that keeps that factory exit configuration but you still want dual pipes, you could go with the side exit but I like this one in the rear exit. It's a little bit more of a classic street rod kind of look and you've got these really awesome three-inch polished tips which are made out of stainless steel by the way so they'll clean up nicely for years to come. All you gotta do is wipe them off and they'll look good. Now as far as quality goes, something this affordable is not necessarily cheap. This system actually installs quite easily. It is a bolt-on application. It is a little bit heavy and time-consuming so I'm gonna give the install a modest two out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter but it's definitely something you can do at home in the driveway with some hand tools, shouldn't take you more than two hours or so and that's honestly if you're taking your time. Now one thing I wanted to point out, this system is made out of aluminized steel which is considered an entry-level steel. However, as long as you keep the undercarriage clean, you shouldn't have to worry about rust or corrosion. Now if you do live on the East Coast or West Coast, you take your truck off-road, you throw it through mud or you get a lot of road salt under there and you don't feel like cleaning it, I would consider a stainless steel setup and MBRP does offer a system similar to this for a couple bucks more so that's just something to keep in mind. But again, if you want a really nice deep, lopey idle, you want a nice throaty roar from idle to redline, you don't want any raspy or crackly notes, and you're just looking for one of the most affordable dual exhaust upgrades, then the Installer Series is gonna be the one you should go with. And if you decide to pull the trigger on this one, you can come back in just a minute. I'm gonna show you guys what tools you need to get the job done and then I'll walk you through that install step by step. All right. To install your MBRP system, at minimum, you'll need a standard drive ratchet, a 13-millimeter socket as well as a half inch and 9/16 deep socket. You'll need a 5/16 Allen head socket or Allen key and a 9/16 wrench. Optional but helpful tools include some spray lubricant, an exhaust hanger puller tool, a dead blow mallet, a pry bar, and a cordless impact. All right. So there are two ways you can remove your factory exhaust. One way is cutting it off piece by piece but if you're a fan of retaining your stock parts like me, I'm gonna show you how to remove it without doing that. You're gonna start in front of the Y-pipe here at the flange. You'll need a 13-millimeter socket. We're gonna pull the two bolts securing the flange and that's gonna disconnect the factory cat-back from the vehicle. Then we have to get it out of our rubber isolators and our exhaust hangers. There are three in total. Pretty straightforward, we're gonna spray those down, push the entire exhaust back, pull it out from underneath the truck. So let's go ahead and pull those bolts from the flange and I'll show you how to get all those rubber isolators loosened up. All right. Next, we're gonna spray up those three rubber isolators that are still holding onto the cat-back. There's one in front of the muffler, one behind it, and one at the tailpipe. Spray all three down with some spray lubricant, soapy water will do if you're in a pinch, and once you've sprayed all those down, you're gonna push the entire exhaust back towards the rear of the vehicle until you free up those three exhaust hangers. The entire exhaust will drop down. You can let the over axle pipe rest on the axle. Just make sure it doesn't come crashing down on your head. It's helpful to have a friend with you if possible. At any rate, once you've got the exhaust freed up, we're gonna pull it out underneath the truck as one piece. All right. We got our factory system removed. We got our new system mocked up and pieced together, that way you could get a good idea of how everything is supposed to fit together and you can see that nice rear exit configuration. Couple of similarities and differences to point out here. We are retaining our factory hanger locations, makes the install very straightforward. We do not have to use our extension pipe because we are working with a 145-inch wheelbase. But if you did have a longer wheelbase, you'd have that extension pipe down here in the middle. So no cutting required, that's nice. A couple of cool things to point out about the MBRP system that's different from the factory system, obviously, we are going from that single exit to that split rear exit. They do include a new hanger that has a speed clip so there's no drilling required. I'll show you guys how to get that installed in just a minute but you can see how much smaller the new MBRP muffler is compared to the factory muffler. Now we are still keeping a resonator on this guy but it's a high-flow resonator. It's going to clean up that sound. It's gonna get rid of all that restriction that the factory system comes with. Now as far as diameter, we have a three-inch factory exit. We're working with a 2-1/2 inch exit here and that keeps the exhaust from sounding too gurgly or droney at idle or at those cruising RPMs. So now that you guys can see some of those cool differences and similarities, let's get the new one bolted on. We're gonna start with our new mid-pipe and I'll show you guys what hardware we need and I'll show you how to get that bolted up in just a second. All right. Now we can throw our muffler in place. In order to secure the muffler to the mid-pipe, you'll need this hanger/ clamp combo and you'll need that same 9/16 socket to tighten this guy down again. We want to tighten this down enough to keep everything in place but we're not gonna drive everything home just yet. And to get this hanger into that rubber isolator, I would heavily recommend spraying it down, makes it a little bit easier on yourself. All right. I'm crouched underneath the axle here because we're installing our over axle pipes. Now before you throw these onto the end of the muffler, make sure you got one of those clamps on the end there and again, you'll need that same 9/16 socket to tighten all that stuff down. All right. With our over axle pipe in place, we're gonna throw our tailpipe on. Want to make sure you spray down that rubber isolator when you get this hanger in there. Also, make sure you have one of those clamps on the end of the tailpipe so you could secure it to the over axle pipe. All right. Our tailpipe is in place, now we can throw on our exhaust tip. This uses an Allen head bolt so you'll need a 5/16 Allen socket or an Allen key. Once you tighten this down, we're gonna go ahead for our tailpipes on to the passenger side. All right. Before we install our driver side tailpipe, we have to install new exhaust hanger. You're going to throw the speed clip into the square hole and round hole which is located next to the bracket for all the lines going to the axle. All right. Once you got that speed clip in there, you wanna throw your hanger up as such with the bolt facing into the speed clip and you want the orientation of the exhaust hanger to be facing towards the rear of the truck. Then once you get that bolt in place, you'll be using a half inch socket to tighten this down. All right. With our exhaust hanger in place, we could throw our new tailpipe up. You wanna get the hanger into the rubber isolator at the same time as you're threading this onto the over axle pipe. You also want to make sure you have one of those clamps on this so you can secure everything after you get this secured. All right. With our hanger in place, we could throw on our tailpipe. Make sure you have a clamp on the tailpipe when you throw it on so you can tighten it down. Once we have that in place, we'll install our exhaust tip. All right. Both of our exhaust tips are in place and they're pretty much flush with each other on either side. But as you could tell, our tailpipes are obviously not lined up because we didn't tighten them down all the way yet. So, double check your clearances. If your truck is in the air and your axle is not under load like ours is, you might have some concerns about fitment. That's okay. You might see your leaf springs contacting the tailpipes. You might see some lines on the axle contacting the passenger or driver's side. Not a problem. Once the axle is under load, you'll have plenty of clearance. Just verify you can get both tailpipes and exhaust tips squared up with the bumper then we'll drive everything home with our 9/16 and our 13-millimeter sockets. So once you got both tailpipes lined up and tightened down and you've driven home all the other clamps, that'll wrap up the install. That also wraps up my review of the MBRP 2-1/2 inch Installer Series dual exhaust system in the rear exit configuration fitting your '11 to '14 5-liter powered F-150. I'm Travis, thanks for watching and for all things F-150, keep it right here at americantrucks.com.
