Review & Install Video
Hey, guys. Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com here with the MMD Ducktail Spoiler for all '99 to 2004 Mustangs, minus you '03 to '04 Cobras that are out there. The rear spoiler does ship unpainted, so it's safe for me to say that it's gonna look much better once it's properly prepped and painted. Obviously, a paint-match spoiler is gonna look a lot more flattering, and I will say that this obviously isn't a fully-prepped piece. There's really no prep work done to this at all, and you can see that there's some imperfections visible, since it isn't prepped. So just don't be surprised if you pull this out of the box, and it doesn't look show ready.
The MMD Ducktail Spoiler has a little bit of a different design than the other aftermarket spoiler options for the '99 to '04 Mustangs. It's taking some styling cues from the infamous '03 to '04 Cobra, so it's gonna be a great option for those of you out there that are looking for that type of style for your Mustang. A lot of the other aftermarket options, when if comes to spoilers and wings, are either pedestal-type, which isn't really a true spoiler, in my opinion, or the real wings. A true spoiler, for me, maintains contact with the decklid all the way around it all the time. So I'd say that the pedestal types resemble more of a wing to me. So I'd say that the Ducktail spoiler is a real spoiler, the only real spoiler that's available on the site.
So the Ducktail style just adds onto the decklid. It's contoured the same way as the decklid but just adds a little beauty to the back to make it stand out some. It reminds me of a wide body kit. It takes a stock body and adds on to it and accentuates it. One of the nice things about this spoiler is that it doesn't cover the third brake light on the top of the decklid. There's an opening in the spoiler that will leave this open and still visible. And, of course, there's an opening for the keyhole in the trunk lid as well.
Another cool thing and something that I like about this spoiler is that it doesn't require any drilling for the install. And it comes with the fill plugs to cover the holes that are left by the factory wing. The design of the spoiler does not cover all the holes that are left by the factory wing. So there are six plugs that are given to fill these holes. Now, the '01 to '04 models, we'll need to use two of these plugs. While the '99 to 2000s, we'll need to use all six of them.
The factory holes are actually a decent concern when you start making changes like this, so it's nice that the fill plugs are included. You don't have to worry about rust or water leaking. As far as materials, this is an ABS material, which is a common material to use for exterior modifications. It's commonly used because it's lightweight and very durable, so it'll hold up through all kinds of weather and still maintain its looks. It's also impact resistant, so you won't have to worry about a fragile piece, and that's always a nice feature for street cars.
When it comes to fitment, this rear spoiler is designed to fit the '99 to 2004 New Edge, so the V6, the GTE, the Bullet, the Mach 1, and the '99 to '01 Cobra. It will not fit the '03 to '04 Cobras. Now, the install is going be a little bit different, depending on where your car falls in the New Edge year range. The '01 to '04 models, we use a combination of both the 3M tape and hardware, using the existing holes left by the factory wing. That's why you only need to use two of the six fill plugs that are given. The spoiler installs using the 3M tape only on the '99 to 2000 models.
As far as price, you're looking at spending about $300 for this spoiler. You also have to keep in mind the cost of paint if you're planning on paint matching this. But the additional cost of paint is going to be a concern across the board with aftermarket spoilers and wings. If this is a bit pricey for you, you can check out some of the other options. When it comes to the install, this is a very easy install. I mentioned this earlier, but the install will change, depending on what year Mustang you have, but not by much. This spoiler installs mostly with double-sided tape, so there's always the rule of making sure the surface is as clean as possible before the install.
Both alcohol prep pads and adhesion promoter are provided, so using both of those things will help create a solid bond for the 3M tape. The install should take less than an hour to complete, and it's gonna be a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. Wrapping things up here, the MMD Ducktail Spoiler is a ducktail-style, rear decklid spoiler that's made from a durable, lightweight ABS plastic, that's both lightweight and hardy. It keeps the factory third brake light. You don't have to drill for the install, and the spoiler comes with fill plugs for the factory wing holes that are not covered or utilized for the new spoiler. You can check it out more online right here at AmericanMuscle.com.
