Review & Install Video

Hey this is Justin with, and today we’re going to be breaking down the Tokico HP Series shocks and struts, available for all 99-04 Mustangs. Tokico made its presence known in the aftermarket suspension world over 50 years ago and then solidified their name by basically inventing the modern twin tube shock absorber back in the 70s. The HP Series is a great entry level aftermarket shock and strut and continues to be a popular choice with many car owners, and is still a top rated customer item here on the site. These shocks are going to be perfect for someone who’s either planning on lowering their car soon, or has already done so, or just needs to replace a worn out of blown factory shock. When you put aftermarket lowering springs on your factory suspension, it will put a ton of added stress on those factory units, oftentimes leading to a bouncy ride, which can often lead to blown shocks or struts. Besides being able to handle the added stresses of a lowered car with ease, these aftermarket shocks and struts will also greatly improve your cars performance as well, they’re going to eliminate body roll in corners, they’re actually going to prevent dive in while breaking, and squat during acceleration, helping you eliminate that annoying wheel hop. Installing a new set of shocks and struts is probably something which sounds a little harder than it actually is, however if you have a good set of hand tools, basic floor jack, and jack stands, and some confidence, you should be able to tackle each corner in about 30 minutes. If you’re purchasing a set of aftermarket lowering springs along with these Tokicos, then I would strongly recommend getting your car realigned when you get the install all wrapped up. Depending on how low you go, you might want to invest in a set of Camber plates as well, just so you can properly dial in your alignment without chewing up your tires. While the HP series may not offer a dampening adjustment like some more costly options, there’s no doubt they are a great entry level aftermarket shock and strut, that can handle pretty much anything you throw at them, and will help your Mustang ride like new again.

Ideal Replacement. If your SN95 Pony is bottoming out on the smallest speed bumps or potholes, consider upgrading your worn out factory struts with Tokico HP Series Struts.

Daily Driver Friendly. Tokico HP Series Struts offer superior performance and traction without taking away from the comfort of your ride. Even lowered Mustangs on rough roads or potholes won't be a problem with Tokico HP Series Struts.

Improves Handling. Struts are a critical part of your suspension and help provide traction when you're accelerating or cornering. Tokico HP Series Struts are specially designed to help keep your tires planted under all conditions while keeping your ride comfortable.

Superior Quality. Tokico products have been the choice of OE manufacturers for decades for their superior quality, durability, and performance. Tokico's precision manufacturing process and dedication to producing premium quality parts make them a perfect choice for your Mustang.

Application. This Tokico HP Series Front Strut is designed for use on the 1994 to 2004 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, GT, Bullitt, Mach 1, and SVT Cobra models. Sold individually.

Great Struts

Wow these struts made a huge difference. I also put new ball joints and new caster/camber plates on my 94 stang with 244,000 miles and she rides like a new one. Highly suggest these sturts

I had used stock shocks/struts on my lowered car before installing these and it would be bouncy , now with these its like gliding in more bounce.

I'm not bouncing but slamming. I have a second hand 02 Mustang GT 4.6. A previous owner already installed Eibach springs to lower the stang but left it with factor shocks and it's now at 160k miles. It looks great but rides horribly and I just can't stand the slam I experience every time I roll over a speed bump or pothole. I read how everyone talks about how these and other shocks reduce the bounce after lowering, but as I said, it's more like a slam. I've already bought an extra set of front rims after hitting one too hard. It's a killer and I dare not hit another beyond .5 miles an hour. New shocks going to solve that? Or is the more wrong than 2002 OEM shocks?

  • With 160k miles on the factory shocks, you are well overdue for replacements. I have these Tokico HP series struts and shocks, and now my 2k GT rides like a new car, it corners flat, and there is no more slamming the pavement on speed bumps. I changed my shocks/struts at 145k and now wonder why I waited so long. These will remedy your issue, without a doubt.

When installed, how much lower will my mustang be? Do these struts fit on a 96 gt convertible?

  • This front strut will fit your 1996 GT Convertible without a problem, but these struts will not lower your car. They are a great complement to a set of lower springs though offering increased handling and a comfortable ride at the same time!

    Best bang for the buck

Bought these with the rear shocks to replace my worn out stockers. They are paired with the Eibach Pro Kit. I don't have a heart attack now approaching pot holes and larger road bumps. These dampers absorb them with eez. The ride is stiffer but in a good way. Handling is 100 times better. Also cured the tail wag I was getting. Highly recommend.

    Big Difference

I and some of my friends installed these struts in a short time, and they were a big improvement over the aging stocks. Ride quality is great, and the car doesn't bounce after speed bumps anymore!

Tokico HP Front Struts & Rear Shocks.

I bought this set of shocks for my 007 GT last year. After installing a new set of tires. I wanted to drive it for at least 5000 miles before I gave this review. They installed just like any other set of shocks. Then I took her to get an alignment. Throughout the year rain and shine they have performed exceptional. Ride is solid, firm but not harsh. Very good control. And does not fade on hot days. I know these are the best handling street shocks for the money. Excellent.....Thanks guys.

    Not that great.

I bought a set front/back and after installing it, I noticed that it raised my car a little bit, so that's the first problem I encountered. Second, the ride became bouncy/bumpy/jiggly or whatever you wanna call it, it's very sensitive to bumps. Third, I feel like I'm driving a boat on the freeway around 75/80mph, it's wobbly. The only thing it does is it keeps my chin spoiler from rubbing the ground. But again, this is just my review from personal experience, yours may be different.

Not too hard to change from old to new if you have new bushings and use an impact gun and sockets, 21mm & 24mm.

    Awesome Product

Bought a set of Tokico HP shocks and struts. The shipping only took a couple of days from PA to NH. Install was a breeze. Even before putting in the C springs in my 01 V6 I noticed a huge difference in ride quality. There was no more bouncing after hitting a bump. Rock solid! Combined with the C springs it rides like a completely different (and much better) car.

I bought both the shocks and struts.sooo much better then the stock ones if your looking for something that will take a lot of the bounce out of your car ,this is it.I almost gave it a 4 just cuz it was a little more of a pain to install then they said but not to bad.For the price its a must have for replacing the stock ones.

    97 Cobra

Replaced my stock struts with these w/ camber plates. Much improvement and no longer feel the bumps. My 97 Cobra is lowered 2", so I feel everything but these made a difference. About to purchase shocks for the rear and entire bushing replacement. She will be like new, only better!

    nice hold for a while

This is a good quality product easy to install if u know your car. The bad thing is that if your car has been lowered ( eibach) springs and u drive more than 142 miles a day freeway they are not worth it . Go with coil overs .

    Great, but Expensive

Improvement to ride over factory shock absorbers does not warrant the price of admission. However, these shocks are excellent replacements when the factory shocks are worn and/or miled out. Highway driving is a delight again, and installation was simple. Got to love the simplistic front suspension set up for the Mustangs prior to 2005.

    Tokico HP Struts

One of the best investments I've done so far to my stang. My old factory struts were completely shot and made the car extremely bouncy (car is lowered 2" so it's already bouncy from the springs). Installation from start to finish took around an hour and a half. Once on, the ride and handling improved tremendously. Corners like a dream. Would definitely recommened these struts to anyone looking to replace their old factory ones. Not so expensive and it gets more then just the job done.
