Review & Install Video
Hey, everybody, I'm Justin with americanmuscle.com, and this is my quick review of the smoked LED third brake light option from Putco, available for your 2015 and newer F-150. In this video, I'm gonna talk about the design and construction of the Putco light itself, what you can expect in regards to total light output, and I'm also going to give you a quick walk-through of the install of the light here which really isn't that bad, guys. Total plug and play job. Expect a very simple one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, and we'll have more on that later.
Now, the Putco smoked LED third brake light option is going to be for the truck owners out there who is looking to make a big departure from the factory third brake light in both appearance and functionality and will also be a key part in upgrading all of your truck's exterior lighting to the more modern LED. Now, this is going to be a very modern light in regards to overall style and outward appearance as you can see but does pack some modern tech with those LEDs, of course. And best part is, it's going to be completely plug and play.
Let's start with off with the construction of the Putco light. And as you can see, again, guys, it took a very modern approach when it comes to designing and styling this light. You're looking at an ABS plastic housing here. A row of high-intensity red LEDs are gonna make up the center portion and these guys are going to be handling your braking duties. Now, these LEDs are obviously gonna be much brighter than the factory incandescent lighting in your factory third brake light. And this is something you really want when you're talking about a third brake light, right? Because it's only going to increase your visibility, both day and night, and this is going to increase your safety while on the road.
Flanking the brake light portion of the Putco light, you're going to find four individual bright white LEDs. And these guys are actually going to illuminate the bed and all of its cargo. And again, are gonna do a great job. And I think this is one of the biggest plusses when going with the Putco light in general. The total light output is really just gonna blow you away. From the brake lights to the bed and cargo lights, much better than the factory lighting in general. A portion of that can be attributed to the fact that Putco utilizes what they call a deep LED set up with this particular light. And basically all that means, guys, is they're gonna set the diode back into the housing a little bit further, and that's gonna give you a little bit more light output thanks to the reflectivity in addition to making for a very unique look.
And speaking of looks, this is Putco's smoked option, of course, here on the table. But you can also grab this light in a clear or chrome option as well. Both available, or all three available here at AM. Whatever option you do decide to grab, guys, they're all gonna come equipped with Putco's ion chrome coating which is actually a coating they apply to the interior lens here. And again, just gonna help increase the total light output overall, thanks to the increased reflectivity along with those deep LEDs. Now, I do want to quickly come back to the smoked option here again with me on the table. And honestly, guys, when I first saw this thing, I actually thought it was the clear version. It just doesn't resemble a smoked light to me. Now, some of you guys might be okay with that but some of you guys might prefer the more dark or aggressive smoked light. And if that's what you're after, then you might wanna check out a different light.
As far as price, guys, well this is definitely gonna be one of the more premium third brake light options available here at AM, landing you right in the mid-100 dollar price point. Which is going to be, again, a little expensive for some of you guys out there. But keep in mind you are getting probably one of the better built third brake light options in the category along with Putco's one year warranty.
As far as the install again, guys, you're looking at a very straightforward job. Total plug and play stuff here. So first, go ahead and remove that factory third brake light using a screwdriver to remove the two screws holding it in place. Unplug that light and remove it from the truck. Plug in the Putco light and then re-install in reverse order and that's pretty much it, guys. Again, a very soft one out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter. And maybe 30 minutes from start to finish to get the light in place.
Wrapping this one up here, guys. Ford did a great job of adding exterior LED lighting to the truck for the most part. But they did leave a few key areas out, the third brake light being one of them. By adding Putco's option here, you are getting the benefits of that modern LED lighting and functionality, while adding a very modern and aggressive light at the same time. So be sure to check out a Putco third brake light option for your truck right here at americanmuscle.com.
