Review & Install Video
Hey, guys, Justin from AmericanMuscle.com, here with my detailed review of the Putco Black Platinum Rocker Panels available for your 2015 and up SuperCrew F150.
Guys, this review is gonna cover a few basic topics, basically what these things are made of, what they're gonna do to your styling, how they're gonna impact your budget, and finally, what it takes to get the Putco Rocker Panels installed. You'll be happy to know, guys, these are a 100% peel and stick job. No permanent modification needed. So, a simple one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, with a little bit more detail coming up on that later on.
The Black Platinum Rocker Panels from Putco might appeal to any SuperCrew owner out there looking for a very unique styling mod that will offer the smallest bit of function as well. Now, when installed, these guys will help protect the lower rocker area on your SuperCrew F150 from rocks and other road debris, especially if you're running wider wheels and aftermarket tires with more aggressive offsets. That extra style and functionality won't be for everyone however, because these things are gonna come at a pretty steep cost. But, however, you have to consider these are unlike anything else on the market right now and they will offer a quality build and materials.
So, let's get into them a little further. Anyone who's been in the truck scene for any amount of time is probably pretty familiar with the name Putco. They've been around for a long time, making a wide variety of truck accessories with a heavy focus on chrome, but lately they've been expanding their line-up a little bit more to include some aftermarket lighting, and now their Black Platinum Series which is their new level or line of trim geared towards the high-end truck market.
Now, the Rocker Panels we have in this video are just one of many parts offered from Putco's Black Platinum line-up. They also include fender trim, door sills, tailgate accents and many other products. Now, these things are designed to run the entire length of your truck, so it's very important you order the correct size because they will differ depending on your bed size.
Now let's switch gears and talk about the construction here with this Rocket Panel kit because I definitely think it's gonna be one of the biggest pros when entertaining the Black Platinum Rocker Panels. Putco did go with their 304 grade stainless steel for the basic construction, which is a top quality material and it's gonna be the best material ultimately at reducing corrosion. Putco is so confident in this that they attach a lifetime warranty against any possible defects.
Keeping with the Black Platinum name, Putco applies their UV stable near black coating to these Rocker Panels, which I just think looks really sharp but probably gonna pop a little bit more on the lighter colored trucks, but overall should look pretty good on just about any color rig out there.
Now, I really like what these things do from an appearance standpoint because, in my opinion, it just breaks up the single body color a little bit more and adds a little bit more detail in the process. Now, Putco actually recommends you throw a coat of wax on these things from time to time, just to help maintain that original finish. You're actually getting 12 individual pieces with this kit from Putco, so you're covering a lot of real estate on your truck. Basically from the front of the cab all the way back to the rear bumper. Now, the panels do measure about four and a quarter inches wide and are designed for each vehicle specifically, and it really does show when installed as the panels do fit great.
But now let's address the elephant in the room, and that is the price. At just over $400, this isn't exactly the most affordable aesthetic mod on the site, but again, you are getting a very unique product. It is offering some additional protection and styling, and you are getting some pretty quality materials. With that said, could you achieve similar results with vinyl? Well, probably, guys, but this again is going to be for the premium truck owners out there who appreciate the finer things in life and don't mind spending a little extra for them.
One thing this kit does however have going for it is the ease of install. Like I mentioned at the top of this video, guys, this is a peel and stick job here. So you're looking at a very soft one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter and maybe 30 minutes to an hour to get everything installed. Putco does recommend doing the installation in temperatures above 65 degrees Fahrenheit, and of course making sure the area is nice and clean first before getting started, just to remove any dirt or wax. Now, the panels are labelled for you to help make the install slightly easier, using P or D to label passenger or driver, and the panels are numbered starting from front to back.
Putco does recommend doing a test fit with these panels, just to get a better idea of how they're gonna sit or how they're gonna look when installed. Once you're ready to rock and roll, simply start from front to back, remove the protective backing on the pre-installed 3M automotive tape and adhere carefully to your truck. The Black Platinum Rocker Panels from Putco certainly aren't going to appeal to everyone just on price alone, but if you are looking for a very unique styling mod that will add the smallest amount of protection and just some more bling overall to your new F150, then you might want to check these things out.
