    Review & Install Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m taking a closer look at the Pypes Long tube and shorty X pipe combination, fitting the 4valve 4.6L V8 found in all 2005-2010 Mustang GTs. I’m sure that many of you are aware that running a set of long tubes is going to yield the largest results in terms of both horsepower and torque, when compared to your factory manifolds, or even an aftermarket shorty header. What you may not know is by running a set of long tubes, you’ll almost always have to modify your mid pipe. This system from Pypes takes all the guesswork out of this process, by pairing your long tube headers up with the shorty X pipe, making for a direct bolt on no modification needed install. Taking a closer look at these long tubes from Pypes you’ll first notice they went with a brightly polished, 1 5/8” 304 grade stainless steel constructions, this diameters going to be pretty much the norm as far as aftermarket headers are concerned, with the one lone exception being the max long tube headers, that utilize a slightly larger 1 ¾” tubing. The Pypes also feature great welds throughout, including the inside of the welds here which you’ll find great penetration, and the best part is they’ve all been smoothed out so it’s going to help reduce any excess exhaust turbulence. As for the mid pipe again we’re looking at mandrel bent stainless steel construction throughout, this time utilizing 2 ½” tubing. This is an off road X pipe so it will delete those factory cats, of course doing so will trigger a check engine light, and that’s why we stress either having a tune in place, or planning on purchasing one around the time of the install. This way you can tune for the maximum power gains with the new setup, and of course turn off that check engine light. Besides the obvious gains in power, this kit is going to completely change the sound of your exhaust, there’s really only one way to describe the sound you get from running an aftermarket long tube and X pipe combination, and that is evil, I mean you might run into a little bit more rasp than usual, but it just sounds amazing. Of course throw your favorite catback of choice into the mix, and you have a combination that will surely wake the dead. That leads me to my final point, this system from Pypes will bolt up to any stock or aftermarket Cat-Back exhaust without issue, of course this makes for an easier install but it also makes for endless possibilities to obtain your ideal exhaust setup. We typically call any long tube header install a full day just to be on the safe side. We do have a pretty detailed writeup here on the product page that should walk you through everything very clearly. As always if you should run into any problems or you don’t feel confident enough to tackle this job, don’t hesitate to give your local shop a call. Pypes long tube and shorty X pipe is an affordable quality combination that will not only improve your horsepower and torque, but also your exhaust note, be sure to check it out right here at AmericanMuscle.com

Increase horsepower and torque. The Pypes Long Tube Headers and Off-Road Shorty X-pipe combination for the S197 GT Mustangs will balance out the exhaust gas pressure to greatly improve your exhaust flow over the stock system resulting in more horsepower and torque for better throttle response.

Quality Materials. The Long Tube Headers are constructed from free flowing mandrel-bent 1-5/8" polished 304 stainless steel tubing and the Shorty X-pipe is made from 16 gauge 409 Stainless Steel 2.5" tubing for improved exhaust flow and performance.

Application. The Pypes Long Tube header and matching Shorty X pipe combo kit is designed to fit the 2005-2010 4.6L GT Mustangs. And is intended for off-road use only.

I’ve noticed on the Kooks they have headers for Autos and Stick shift transmissions. I have a stick do I need to be worried about any fitment issues?

    • No, this kit was designed by Pypes to work with both manual and automatic transmissions. You will not have an issue getting this kit installed on your Mustang.

How many HP dose it give my and can I run it with out tune

    • Since this kit includes an off-road x-pipe, a tune will be required to prevent a CEL from being thrown. In regards to the power gains. When combined with a tune, you could be looking at at least 15-20 HP. However, this will depend entirely on the tune.

ground clearance will I lose any ground clearance with this set-up? I'm worried about catching collectors at top of my driveway and speedbumps.

    • Since the Pypes Long Tube Headers w/ Shorty X-pipe (05-10 GT) will be bigger than your factory exhaust it will hang lower. This should not affect your ground clearance at all. The only case you may run into some trouble is if your car is lowered more than 2.5" from the factory height.

I have a ford racing axle back exhaust currently on the car will this fit with this system or will I have to make some bends and welds?

    • Your FR axle-back exhaust doesn't directly bolt up to this Long Tube Header/Mid-pipe combo. The shorty x-pipe in this kit will bolt up to the factory flow tubes that your current mid-pipe is attached to. You can use this Header/X-pipe combo without any issues! Enjoy!!

      Impressive Quality

I installed these on a lift at the shop that I work at. Between working on my car and customer cars that were coming into the shop, the install took an entire day. I inspected the quality of the welds and the parts and I was pleasantly surprised with the over all quality of these headers. For the price I don't think you can justify spending the money for the more expensive headers regardless of where they are made. These also quieted down my car a lot inside the cabin (I had a catless x pipe before installing this and anywhere above 3,000 rpm you couldn't hear the person next to you) they also give some nice pops and burbles under deceleration. Over all I think these were a great buy based on the quality, sound, and most importantly that extra power that you can feel.

      Decent

Get ready, this is about to be a long review. First, I opened the box and they looked great. Welds were decent, and everything seemed in order. On to the Install. Removing the old stuff wasn't so bad. Don't be like me and try to cut corners. Face the facts, you HAVE to remove the motor mounts, starter, dipstick tube, battery, battery tray, steering linkage and airbox (optional). I thought removing the old stuff was the bigger pita, but that was incorrect. After finally getting all the studs out of each head and starting the bottom four bolts on each side, I go to put my shiny new headers on and the holes don't line up. Bummer. I take them down and put my new kooks three valve header gaskets (recommended) up to the flange and the bolt holes on each were off by about a quater inch. Maybe ford changed the head holes in 2007 I don't know, or maybe pypes can't create a template for the correct distance for each hole. I can't believe I'm only the second person to complain about this. Maybe everyone else that writes reviews settles for a shop install. Either way, if you get the same headers i did, be prepared to bore out the holes a bit. Now that the headers will finally fit, I start the bolts and there are a few bolts on each side where only a very short wrench can tighten. This will take you hours. Just be prepared. Also a few helpful tips: don't reuse your old gaskets and DO NOT use the pypes gaskets. They are garbage. Get the kooks 3 valve gaskets. They are sold on this website and thick as freak. The instructions are wrong on the motor mount bolt size. It is 1/2 not 13mm. They are also wrong on which side the extension goes on. It goes on the passenger side, not driver. This will take you way more than 6 hours lol. More like 15 or 16 total. I havent started the car yet so I have no idea how it sounds, I'm adding slp cats to the x pipe now, but I doubt it will disappoint me. This is no cai install, so be prepared. Hope this helps.

      Huge Gains, Great system

I'm loving these headers, I installed them myself and their were fairly straight forward for headers. That being said they were still difficult to install but that comes with the territory. It took me about a full day to install them. Gains wise, My car picked up 50 hp pretty much across the curve, along with that it picked up about 30 ft pounds of torque along the curve. My car had FRPP Cams and FRPP intake manifold before I installed the headers so the gains may be higher with everything working together.

      Loud!

Let me start by saying best mod I have done so far. Wish i did sooner. I had these headers installed by my mechanic. He couldn't get them to bolt up to motor after hour or so. Decided to match up holes to factory manifolds and the hole pattern for headers was off about 3/16". Called AM. They told us to go ahead and dremmel out the holes on left and right side after fastening the middle holes. After 1.5 hrs of modify headers bolted up. Sucks for me since I had to pay mechanic the extra time to make the headers correct. Just be prepared. He said everything else fit perfect. Only wish the sent 2 o2 extensions instead of 1. All in all glad I did this mod.

      A Kooks clone winner!

This will be a long but detailed review. To begin these were installed on my 06 GT. Current list of mods are JLT series 3, GMS 62mm TB, cmdp, Ford Hot Rod cams, 93 race tune. Was running Pypes shorties and o/r x-pipe. The passenger side had warped (3/32) and developed a severe exhaust leak. Always knew long-tubes were the best for total hp gain and this was my excuse to replace the shorties. I had done extensive research on several different brands and found dyno results showing Kooks having the best gain. The Pypes long-tubes are an exact copy and my struggle was choosing between the Kooks quality or the Pypes lower price. I can say that the Pypes quality exceeded my expectations! These are very well built with excellent fit and finish and perfect welds. I installed these at my buddy's shop on his lift. These were more difficult to install than the shorties but fit perfectly with zero clearance issues. I was glad I had a 2nd set off hands to hold them in place while bolting them down. When finished I loaded a new 93 race tune and fired it up. The 1st thing I noticed was the deeper tone, the cams never sounded so good! After doing the idle reset I took a test drive and immediately felt the power gain. Above 3500 rpm all the way to the rev limit it pulled harder than it ever had. I thought the car sounded good before but now it flat out roars! I'm very happy with the results. If you're thinking about buying Pypes long-tubes, I can say that I am very happy I did and would highly recommend these to anyone.

      Loud!!

Ill start off saying this exhaust is extremely loud! I have it paired with 3.73 gears, frpp hot rod cams and JLT intake. I picked up a good amount of torque and power from this setup, but still need to get dynod for numbers. One negative on the system is that its very raspy. It might be because its paired with old flowmaster mufflers. I will be switching them out asap!

      2007 shelby gt headers

was very pleased with the fitment. my experience in past with pypes exhaust hardware required a little fabrication but these did not and was a perfect fit in my 3v. Given these are long tube headers and do require dismounting the engine mounts and lifting the engine up about 3-4 inches and removed starter and etc... but when going in with the headers and mounting them in they were a perfect fit and when job was finished it was a clean fitment install. average time is about 9-9 1/2 hours but I did it with a buddy on jack stands in exactly 7 1/2 hours given being full time mechanics and having necessary tools. and I did notice a performance difference, not only it screams louder and grabs everyone's attention lol but I did notice the car pulls harder once you've reached 4,200 rpms, so definitely noticeable gains above 4g's. I highly recommend a 93 bama tune and youll see even a greater difference both top and bottom end. will definitely leave a smile on your face at start up and cruising around.

      best add on to cams

I added the hot rod cams to my Mustang and then 2 weeks later the long tubes, and now with the combo on the BAMA tune i can beat 5.0's. these headers didn't make the sound to much different but added more pops id call them. Most likely the best mod i put on my Mustang. There was one fitment issue witch is to be expected and that is on the passenger side we had to cut a notch out of the motor mount for the headers to sit more comfortably. As well with the o2 sensor extension, the plug didn't fir with the o2 sensors plug so we had to cut a plastic piece off that. besides those very minor fitment issues a great buy.

      Wicked Exhaust

I had a shop install the headers and "off road" exhaust. This is not an at home project. They had to loosen the mount mounts to get the factory studs out of the heads to replace them the bolts that came with the kit. My car has Pypes mufflers on it. The sound of the engine and exhaust has changed dramatically. The car sounds more tuner like and very loud. I can hear the exhaust strokes in the headers at low RPMs. Under acceleration, it can be heard from blocks away. I suggest a less aggressive muffler. A retune of the ECM is necessary. I do not notice a change in power as I have with mods.
