Review & Install Video
Hey, everybody, I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com here with my detailed review of the Recon LED Tail Lights, available for your '09 to '14 F-150 and Raptor, in your choice of either a red lens, smoked red lens, clear lens, or a smoked clear lens. You should be checking out the Recon LED Tail Light options if you want to totally transform the rear appearance of your truck using one of four different plug and play options, again, from Recon.
Now, these lights will appeal to a number of different people all for different reasons. The smoked clear option would definitely be a great choice for someone who enjoys more of a customized look. Or on the other hand, you can go for a red option, which will be for someone who wants to maintain a little bit of that OE or factory look, but would also like to add the benefits of LED lighting.
Recon is one of the most popular names when it comes to aftermarket lighting for your truck, Jeep, or SUV.
Now, even though Recon is a relatively new company in the big picture here, they've quickly become a fan favorite with many owners who aren't satisfied with the factory lighting and want some auxiliary lighting here that's going to separate his or her rig from the rest. And that really does sum up what Recon has done with these particular tail lights for your F-150. No matter what option you go with, you're going to be getting a huge departure from the factory tail lights on your '09 to '14 truck.
Now, even though you do have four different options to choose from when it comes to these particular tail lights, I think you're going to find they all share the same overall build and general design when it does come to the electronics in the housing.
These are Recon's LED Tail Lights. You're going to find two banks of 12 LEDs or diodes, making for 24 total lights or diodes. Now, these LEDs are going to be a huge upgrade over the factory incandescent bulb and are really going to shine through even the dark smoke lenses we have here, which is very important to not hurt your visibility.
Besides being much brighter than your factory bulbs, those LEDs are also going to last roughly 40 to 50 times longer than the incandescent bulbs, or roughly 50,000 hours, before you have to worry about anything burning out or failing.
Moving away from the lighting, let's talk about the basic design of the housing. Because even though there are, again, four different options here, they're all going to share the basic same design when it does come to the housing. And as you can see, guys, huge departure from your factory tail lights in just about every way, very modern, very angular-looking light, and you are going to have the reverse light, which does live right in the middle of these two banks of LEDs.
Now, speaking of that reverse light, guys, I do want to point out that Recon makes you reuse your factory incandescent reverse bulb here. But if you did want to switch that over to an LED, you totally could. It would help make the look more consistent. You just have to find yourself a 912 or T15 style reverse bulb to get everything to work properly.
Let's talk about those different lens options again because you do have four to choose from, ranging from mild to wild and everything in between.
Now, let's first talk about the red option here, which I don't have with me on the table. But this is going to be the best bet to go with, if we do want to keep things more of an OE or factory look, but you do want to take advantage of the modern LED lighting.
Now, in addition to that factory-styled OE red lens here, Recon is also giving you two smoked options with their LED tail light, a smoked red lens and also a smoked clear lens, and that's the option I have with me here on the table. Now, both are going to provide that dark stealthy appearance that a lot of us truck owners are after, but still going to provide plenty of light output, thanks to those LEDs.
Finally, guys, there's the wild option, and that's Recon's full clear tail light. Now, this thing is definitely going to be for the truck owners out there who prefer to be a little bit different and definitely want to separate his or her truck from the rest.
No matter what light option you go with, all four options will be priced exactly the same in the high $300 range, which does put these things in the premium category when it does come to aftermarket lighting. However, the Recon quality is definitely up there, probably one of the nicer lights I've seen for the F-150, and would far surpass anything you might find on your favorite option site.
No matter what option you do decide to go with, you'll be happy to know that they all four install very easily, thanks to this simple plug and play design. You're going to want to first remove the two eight-millimeter bolt securing your factory tail light to your truck, get that out of the way. Then transfer that reverse bulb over to the new Recon, and then plug your tail light and brake light harness from your F-150 directly into the Recon tail light. Simply reinstall in reverse order, and you should be good to go in less than an hour from start to finish.
Guys, this is a very soft one out of three wrenches on my overall difficulty meter. Again, basic hand tools here, no cutting, no wiring needed, simple plug and play design.
Wrapping up, the Recon LED Tail Lights, guys, are built very well. The modern LEDs will increase your visibility while on the road, helping your safety of course in the process. And with the four different lens options, they should appeal to a wide variety of owners.
So be sure to check out a set for your '09 to '14 F-150 and Raptor, right here at AmericanMuscle.com.
