Review & Install Video
The Recon Projector Headlights with smoked lenses are available for any 2009-2014 F-150 owner that's looking for a way to swap out the stock headlights for a set that completely changes up the look on the front end with a dual halo styling. These are a direct fit replacement that comes with everything you need including upgraded bulbs. There's a little bit of wiring involved but it's still so straightforward that I'm giving it one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter and I'll talk more about it later on.
Now, I'll be the first to admit that the halo styling, let alone a dual halo styling, won't be for everybody. The factory headlights look good, but if you're looking to stray away from the norm and get something that's totally gonna change your front end look, this is a unique and pretty inexpensive way to do so. The two halos are side by side, featuring a daytime running light LED light-ring for a pure white light along with five accent lights underlining the halos. These are built to work in conjunction with your factory harness to come on during your daytime as well as with the rest of your headlights functions at night.
As the title suggests, these are a smoked version of the Recon Projectors. Basically what that means is the interior housing is completely black and the lens on the outside is darkened. Some guys out there may have a concern that the smoked lens will sacrifice some light output. With this kit, it's not necessarily the case. Of course, anytime you darken a lens, it will take away some of the light. But with the upgraded bulbs in the kit and the high-powered LED halos, they shine right through and still provides sufficient amounts of light for good visibility.
Now you can even check out some of the customer reviews who have testified to their visibility aspects. Now, if you wanted to upgrade even further, you could pick up a set of xenon bulbs to get the most out of your lights, but obviously, that's up to you and not really required.
The kit is made from all OEM-quality materials so you don't have to worry about a cheaply made housing or poorly put together wiring harness. It comes with four H1 bulbs, two for high and two for low beams, so you won't be needing your factory bulbs anymore.
The wiring isn't too hard, but it still takes the most time out of the install. The aggressive look these guys give off definitely is a unique one. So, if that's what you're looking for, you can pick up the pair for just about 550 bucks on the site. If you wanna check out the customer reviews, they're also available on the product page to help you make your decision. There's also a clear lens option available if you're not really feeling the smoked. Keep in mind, however, these only work for F-150s that did not come with projectors or HIDs from the factory.
The installation again is a no-brainer, really simple stuff that shouldn't take longer than about an hour or so from start to finish. You want to have a simple ratchet and socket set on-deck as well as some electrical tape or the quick-splice connectors to get this job done. Overall, I'm still giving it one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter.
What you'll need to do is pop open your hood, pull off the pushpins holding your top radiator shroud in place, then remove it from the truck. Use your ratchet and socket set to unbolt your factory headlights from under the hood and slowly remove them from the truck. You wanna make sure you safely unplug and remove all wiring harness connections and twist out all the bulbs before you pull them out of the truck so you don't yank them out. Set your stock lights aside. Put the new Recons in the plates on the truck and use your quick-splice connectors or your electrical tape to wire in your positive and negative wires. The black or ground wire from the new Recon headlights will splice into the black on the parking light switch. Now the red or positive wire on the new headlights splices into the purple wire on the same switch. Test out the lights before you finish up and if everything works, you can bolt down the housing and you're good to go.
Just to wrap this one up, if you're the owner of a 2009-2014 F-150, without factory HIDs, you might wanna check out the Recon Projector Headlights with Smoked Lenses available, right here at americantrucks.com.
