Review & Install Video

Hey, everybody, I'm Justin with, and this is gonna be my detailed review and install of the Rough Country Hidden Winch Mounting Plate, available for your 2009 to 2014 F-150, excluding all 3.5 EcoBoost trucks and all Raptors. Now, in this detailed breakdown, I plan on talking about some of the benefits of running a hidden winch mount like this option here from Rough Country. We'll break down some of the specs and materials, and then finally we'll cover some of the juicier bits of the installation. We're not running down a step-by-step, but what I can tell you is, expect a moderate amount of work here with this winch plate. There is some work in some tight areas in addition to some light trimming of the plastic surrounding where this guy would actually live, and if you are gonna be installing a winch at the same time here as the plate, then factor in some light wiring as well. Either way, I'm going two out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, and we will have some more detail on that later on. In my opinion, the Rough Country Winch Plate here will be for the naturally aspirated V6 and 5-liter truck owners out there looking to get a winch on to their rig but would prefer to do so in a stealthy way as this plate will hide that winch behind the front bumper. Secondly here, this is gonna be your most affordable way to get a winch onto your rig as those other options include the aftermarket steel bumpers, which typically run upwards of 1,000 to 2,000 bucks. Last but not least, Rough Country claims that their winch plate will support most aftermarket winches up to 12,000 pounds and this does include those 9,500-pounders as well. So, if you're the type of truck owner who spends a lot of time off-road, on the trails, in the mud, on the beach, whatever, you've probably determined it's time to add a winch. Listen, man, these things are lifesavers and can inevitably help you or a buddy out when you do get jammed up in a tight spot or stuck off road. So, when it comes time to physically get that winch onto your rig again, you're gonna have a couple of options here. Go with the Rough Country style mount, again, it's gonna hide that winch behind the front bumper, and it will no doubt be the most affordable way to do so. Your other option we already talked about it, right? You're gonna add one of the steel aftermarket bumpers which can give you the winch capabilities. It's also gonna help you put a little bit more protection off road. So, it just really boils down to what you're looking for and how much you wanna spend. Speaking of dough, this thing's very affordable. Again, only 200 bucks is what you're looking at here. Obviously, you have to factor in the aftermarket winch as well. The steel bumpers again, we talked about them, right? A 1,000 to 2,000 bucks easily, and that's not even including the winch. So, if you're looking to keep things relatively budget-friendly, this is obviously the way to go. And on top of saving money, some owners might just prefer the look of the factory bumper with the fair leads sticking out, the tow rope, all that cool stuff. As opposed to, or over, those aftermarket bumpers which definitely give the truck a more modified look, kind of that Baja look, which isn't a bad thing per se, but it just might not be for everyone. Let's break down the construction a little bit more and as you can see things are pretty simple with the Rough Country option. You're looking at quarter-inch steel plating throughout. This thing is burly. It's solid. It's heavy, you know it's made to take some abuse. It's actually gonna mount to the frame horns here on the front of your truck which is nice because you don't have to drill into the frame or do anything crazy like that, but you still maintain the use of those factory front tow hooks which is something that I really enjoy. Now, once installed, the winch plate here along with the winch which obviously isn't included with this kit, will be living between

Hidden Winch Mount. Give your Ford truck an impressive yet sleek recovery system with Rough Country's Hidden Winch Mount for the 2009-2014 F-150. This subtle yet innovative design capitalizes on the ample space behind the front bumper to mount a standard sized winch up to 12,000 lb. (sold separately) while keeping everything neat and tidy. Awesome, Great Design

Nice sturdy product, it was like Ford and Rough Country got together and made this fit like a glove. I used it to mount the Badland 12000 lb winch, again, great fit!

Ask a Question

Can this be modified to fit a 2015?

  • We have not tested this on the the 2015 F150, and are not aware of modification that can be done to make this fit a 2015.

I have Iron Cross Automotive HD bumpers on my truck. Can I mount my winch to this instead of to the bumper?

  • This mounting plate is designed to be used with the factory bumper and would not be a direct fit for aftermarket bumpers. This may be used with some aftermarket bumpers however they may require custom modification for proper fitment.

Will this work with a vr12000 winch?

  • The WARN VR12000 winch has a 10" x 4.5" bolt pattern, which is the same one this Rough Country Hidden Winch Mounting Plate has. So that winch would bolt to this plate, it just may require additional trimming to get the winch to fit under the front bumper.

I have a '14 3.5l EcoBoost, however have a Fullrace Intercooler utilizing EBOV, inverted from the stock location. Was the intercooler the only inhibiting factor to the EcoBoost winch mount exclusion?

  • Even with the intercooler relocated, some modification may still be required to make the Rough Country Hidden Winch Mounting Plate work on an Ecoboost. The part mounts to the frame horns, so that would most likely be the same, but there may be differences in the bumper cover that prevent this from being mounted.

It mentions that this will not work with a body lift but will it work with your rough country 2 inch front and rear lift kit? If so, will it still work if the rear has an extra inch block so I can keep the factory rake? Thanks AM

  • As long as you have a suspension lift and not a body lift of any sort, you will be fine.

    Installed with the Barricade bumper.

I installed this when the barricade bumper installed. I had to go to the hardware store for some extra bolts, nuts, and washers. I had to modify the fairlead mount plate a little bit to fit with the barricade bumper. I also bought another fairlead plate. I advising that this could possibly damage the bumper if proper winching ways are implemented. This could also void any warranty I have with the bumper, winch, and/or winch plate. I wasn't able to find any information about what the lateral forces the fairlead would encounter. There will be alittle bit of an offset of fairleads but again as long as you winch yourself straight out there shouldnt be a problem. Again be aware of the damage that could happen. Defiantly satisfied with out it turned out and I'm not worried about anything happening to my bumper but there are always a ton a variables when winching. I have a Smittybilt 10k installed on the winch mount plate. The bumper and winch mount plate are mounted to the frame separate from each other. If you want to know more about winching, theres a youtube video of some Australian guys that explain alot and its very helpful information (sorry I cant remember the name of the video).
