Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Adam here, with americanmuscle.com. Today, I'm bringing you a detailed overview and installation of the Roush Cold Air Intake Kit, fitting all 2015 and newer 2.7 Liter EcoBoost F-150s. In this video, I'll be going over the functionality and benefits you can expect from swapping out your factory air box for a Roush kit we have here, as well as all the materials and construction that tie into it. I'll top the video off with the installation, which I'll let you know upfront here, is gonna be one of the easiest things you can do to your engine of course, so it will get a one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. The Roush Cold Air Intake Kit will be for any 2015, or newer, 2.7 Liter EcoBoost F-150 owner who might be looking to swap out the factory air box for a new and improved aftermarket air box from a very well-known brand in the aftermarket world, while also picking up a couple of horsepower and improved throttle response, all while staying 50-state legal, as well as not requiring custom tune. So the first thing I wanna touch on is the no-tune-required option. Since your 2.7 liter does utilize a speed density instead of a mass airflow, the changes to the computer happen on the fly, whereas the mass airflow would require a custom tune. And since you don't have to pick up a custom tune, that saves you a couple of hundred bucks in the process, so it does make this a direct bolt-on mod. So bolt it right on to the engine, you'll see performance differences immediately, something that you can bolt up and just go. And since it is 50-state legal, I do want to point out this is great for the guys out there in California, or emission restrictive states, looking to pick up an intake to pass their inspection. I do want to point out the 2.7 and 3.5 engines are the only options out there that are 50-state legal, so if you're running a 5.0 or anything bigger, you might want to check out some of the other options, because these will not pass. Jumping over to the really important stuff here, the materials and construction, now, as you can see, this Roush filter is going to be a huge upgrade over the factory option. Roush has manufactured this in a very specific way, giving it a multi-cotton gauze, superior filtration system here with a wire mesh in front just to keep out all the dirt and particles that we don't want getting into the engine bay. In addition to that, this is something that will be washable and reusable, so all you have to do is pop it off when it's filthy or when it's clogged up, wash it out, re-oil it, pop it right back on. Saves you money in the long run as well, because you won't have to constantly replace the filter every couple of thousand miles. In addition to this 6-inch filter I just mentioned before, this is gonna include injection-molded polypropylene materials for the tubing and air box, all withstanding heat and staying durable over time, so it is something that is also gonna be an upgrade over the factory materials. Because of the materials, that all factors into the performance benefits from swapping this out with you factory option. Now, swapping this out, you'll see improvements as far as throttle response is concerned, getting off the line just a little bit quicker with acceleration. You might hear a little bit more aggressive engine sound, but I do want to point out it's not gonna make the world of difference when it comes to horsepower and torque gains. Expect single-digit gains at best, even if you decide to pick up a custom tune, which can help maximize that potential. As far as the pricing goes, expect to be spending just shy of a $300 mark, something, in my opinion, that falls right in the middle of the pack as far as 2.7 and even the 3.5 EcoBoost are concerned. There are a lot of options out there as far as cold air intake replacements, but, in my opinion, the Roush option is gonna be one of the better ones as far as materials and construction, right up there next to the Airaid an

All-Round Intake for Power and Sound. Made for the 2.7L EcoBoost engine found in your 2015-2017 F-150, this Roush Cold Air Intake provides a deep, strong snarl of intake sound along with a useful helping of boosted torque and horsepower. With a big inlet and air box, large high-flow filter, and restriction-free tubing, this part spins up an extra +10.4 horses and +8.5 ft-lps of torque to make your pickup tougher, rougher, and readier. Bearing the famous Roush logo, which instantly calls up all the excitement of the racetrack, this CAI is CARB-compliant and 50-state legal, so you can even take it cruising in California!

Tune (Often) Required. With no requirement to tune your truck’s engine or recalibrate the PCM, the Roush Cold Air Intake is a snap to install and doesn’t affect your truck’s warranty. The stock tune works fine with the Roush Cold Air Intake provided that you use the insert and the stock 85mm MAF. However, if you elect to install a large aftermarket 105mm MAF in the built-in housing, a tune will be required to make the CAI function.

Easy to Clean Dry Filter. Running for approximately 100,000 miles before the first cleaning is needed, the filter element of the Roush Cold Air Intake is washable and reusable. This is a dry filter that does not need oiling. The element’s durability is increased by the use of two layers of wire mesh, an inner and an outer layer, in its construction. This mesh helps the filter keep its shape even after repeated washing.

Complete Air Box and Polyethylene Tubing. Fabricated out of strong, advanced polyethylene compound for the most part, the Roush Cold Air Intake is tough but lightweight. The full air box is injection molded while a roto-molding process is used to create the intake tube with its free-flowing mandrel bends. Both sections are black and have a textured surface for aesthetic reasons. The part features steel clamps and EPDM rubber couplers that can flex as the engine moves during hard driving.

Housing Made for 105mm MAF, with 85mm Option. The MAF housing of the Roush Cold Air Intake is designed to accept an extra-large 105mm aftermarket MAF, matched to the high air flow of the intake tube and filter. However, if you prefer to use the intake without needing to tune the engine, you can place the included insert in the housing, allowing use of the factory 85mm MAF.

Installs Directly in Place of Stock Intake. Installing the Roush Cold Air Intake is a bolt-on procedure that uses hand tools and requires no special skills. No cutting or drilling is needed to fit this component to your truck’s engine. The CAI comes with a package of hardware and clamps, all that is necessary to install the component.

Warranted for 3 Months. Roush covers their Performance Cold Air Intake Kit with a 90 day limited manufacturer’s warranty.

Compliant with CARB, 50 State Legal. CARB compliant, the Roush Performance Cold Air Intake has the CARB EO Number  #D-418-30. This means that it is legal for the streets, roads, and highways in all 50 states of the United States, in addition to track and off-road use. The intake is supplied with a CARB compliance sticker. In order to be legally driven or inspected in California or in other CARB regulated areas, this sticker must be displayed on or near the cold air intake.

Application. This Roush Performance Cold Air Intake Kit is specially designed to fit the 2015 to 2017 F-150s equipped with the 2.7L EcoBoost engine.

Will changing over to the Roush intake effect the warranty?

SandyD

  • According to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a vehicle manufacturer cannot void the warranty of your vehicle due to an aftermarket part unless they can prove that the aftermarket part was the cause of or contributed to the failure of the vehicle (15 U.S.C. 2302 (C)). This means that a vehicle's warranty cannot be "voided;" the dealer can only deny a claim if the stock part failed due to damage or unreasonable use. If you plan to install this Roush Cold Air Intake, we would still recommend reaching out to the dealership in which the vehicle was purchased, as they may have specified a particular component to void warranty.

For one I love this intake but it has caused a engine code stating that my crank case breather system is disconnected. Dealership is saying it's the intake. Any fixs for this? I know afe has the tube you put down in to restrict the air flow back into the crank to cure the issue with there. Does roush have the same thing?

    Great design

The 2015-17 f150 Roush CAI is a better design than than the previous model for the 2012-14 F150. This CAI comes with a complete air box and the air filter is a lot bigger. You will only see minor performance increase. Like most CAI for the F150s, it doesn't require a tune. If you want to get the most out of any CAI I recommend that you do get a tune.

Great Sound and Performance, fit and finish OK

This intake gives the truck a great sound and I would easily believe Roush's claim for hp and torque improvements. That said, the fit and finish did not meet my expectations, lots of plastic flashing and prevalent seam lines from manufacturing make the kit feel cheap and the air box does not fit tightly around the dirty air scoop/ram air inlet or the clean air tube so it ultimately will pull in a little hot air from the engine bay. Still the performance and sound outweigh those minor grievances

It fit like a factory part. So I'd give it a 5 for fit and finish. I felt no seat of the pants improvement and really no sound improvement either. I wish I'd have gone with the AFE stage2 unit.

    Surely Worth The Purchase

I would definitely recommend this CAI for anyone owning a 3.5 EB. Installation was fairly easy with no hiccups the way along. At startup you can obviously hear the difference when you push the accelerator with the hood open. In cab you can hear the air filtering more through the tubing and more turbo sound as well; pretty unique sound. With windows open you can hear the turbos clear as day. Do note that I have the Roush Cat-back exhaust which complements one another. You can feel the extra power at the wheels with a clean throttle response compared to stock; it's not HUGE but really noticeable.

    Added performance

Adding the Roush intake to the existing Roush exhaust has made some more HP and gains on throttle response and overall performance. I'm impressed by the overall gains from the intake and I also like the look and style of it. It's the largest intake that I've seen in a vehicle, but it goes very well with the amount of open space in the new 2016 F-150's engine bay.
