Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, guys. Adam here with americanmuscle.com. Today, I'm bringing you a quick overview and installation of the Roush cold air intake kit fitting all 2015 and newer 3.5-liter EcoBoost F-150s. So in this video, we'll be going over the functionality and benefits you can expect from the Roush cold air intake kit we have here, as well as all the materials and construction since they kind of go hand in hand. Now, I'll top the video off with the installation, which I'll let you know up front here, will be one of the easier mods you can do to your EcoBoost engine so it will get a very easy one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. The Roush cold air intake kit will be for any 2015 or newer 3.5-liter EcoBoost F-150 owner who might be looking to swap out their factory air box to pick up an upgrade to give you a better air flow, leading to a better throttle response with something that is a very well-known brand, 50-state legal, while all reaping the benefits without a custom tune. Now, everything you see on the table with me today, as well as all the clamps and hardware that will be included in the kit that you don't see here, will all be a higher-quality material and construction as compared to the factory stock air box. Now, with that said, this is going to be a better ABS plastic with a textured finish. The Roush filter is really the star of the show, however, I'll touch on the materials and construction of that later. But it is worlds better than the factory option and it's washable and reusable, huge plus there. Moving on to the air box itself, this is something that will keep all the dust particles out and the heat out, making sure this is pulling in cold air from the outside, and everything else in between is also gonna be a big upgrade. I'll touch on everything a little bit later, but I do want to point out again that this is something that does not require a tune, or a custom tune I should say, in order to work properly. There's a huge bonus there and a big Roush name is definitely something that a lot of people will be after with the aftermarket world to replace a stock option. Speaking of no tune required, since your 3.5-liter EcoBoost utilizes a speed density meter instead of the mass air flow, it can make changes to its computer on the fly, whereas a mass air flow would require a custom tune. And because you don't require a tune, you don't have to worry about spending a couple hundred bucks or a couple hundred extra bucks on top of this in order to make it work properly. In this case, it's a simple, direct the bolt on and go. Now, the last point I want to make on tuning is if you do want to maximize the potential of the cold air intake, a tune is definitely, definitely a good option, not required, however. That's kind of the point I'm trying to make here. So if you have the couple extra bucks and you really want to maximize the potential, go ahead and pick up a tune, but if not, then it's really not something you have to worry about. You will see performance gains and benefits from this particular option. As far as the actual performance gains, you can expect single-digit numbers as far as horsepower and torque is concerned. What you can really expect is a better engine sound, an overall better air flow coming into the manifold, and most importantly, an improved throttle response, something you might be feeling in the pedal there just to give you that little oomph to get through the line. Now again, not something with crazy, world-changing benefits as far as horsepower and torque, but you can expect single-digit gains at best. So one thing I do want to point out here is that it is 50-state legal so it is great for the 3.5-liter EcoBoost owner out there in California or emissions-restrictive states like that. However, if you have any other engine other than the 2.7 or 3.5 EcoBoost, unfortunately, this kit is not going to be 50-state legal, so keep that in mind moving forward. So again, one of the best thing

Pick a Power and Difficulty Level. Among auto enthusiasts, the name of Roush is one redolent of high-octane power and performance – a point amply proven by the Roush Performance Cold Air Intake Kit, in this case designed for the 2015-2017 F-150 fitted with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine. Configurable in several different ways, this CAI sucks in enough cold air to generate either +10 horsepower and +8 torque ft-lbs (with an 85mm MAF) or +15 hp and +18 ft-lbs of torque (with a 105mm MAF). This American-made part also boosts throttle response and fuel economy, as well as giving your engine a stronger induction sound.

Tune Possibly Needed. No tune beyond the factory tune of the ECU (electronic control unit) is required if you decide to install the Roush Performance Cold Air Intake Kit with an 85mm MAF. If, however, you elect to get bigger power gains with a 105mm MAF then you’ll need to retune the engine with aftermarket tune in order to get the intake working properly.

Tough, Reusable Oil-Free Filter. The Roush Performance Cold Air Intake Kit includes an air filter element that is made out of cotton fabric sandwiched around two nesting layers of wire mesh for extra strength. The wire also helps the filter retain its necessary shape after washing. This filter element is reusable – after 100K miles, you can remove it, wash it, dry it, and reinstall it without the need for re-oiling, repeating the washing as necessary.

Built for Reliable Service. Roush’s Performance Cold Air Intake Kit is fronted by an injection molded polyethylene air box, made in the United States like the rest of the part. This air box includes an EPDM foam heat shield seal along the upper edge to provide better contact with the hood. The intake tube is rotationally molded, high density polyethylene secured by stainless steel clamps. The couplers are EPDM rubber to ensure that the intake remains in place through twisting and engine load.

Pick Stock or 105mm MAF. The Roush Performance Cold Air Intake Kit gives you a choice between two sizes of MAF. You can choose to install it configured for a 105mm aftermarket MAF (sold separately) for maximum power gains, or with the 85mm stock MAF, which produces less power but also removes the need for a new tune.

Bolts On with Included Hardware. Bolt-on installation is the method needed to fit the Roush Performance Cold Air Intake Kit to your F-150’s engine. This is accomplished with regular ratchet sets, wrenches, and screwdrivers, along with the kit’s hardware – no drilling or cutting is required.

Limited 90 Day Warranty. The Roush Performance Cold Air Intake Kit is protected by a 90 day limited manufacturer’s warranty against defects.

CARB Legal, 50 State Usable. The Roush Performance Cold Air Intake Kit meets all CARB certification guidelines and carries the CARB EO Number #D-418-30. If living in a CARB regulated area such as California, it is advisable to install the CAI so that the CARB compliance sticker is visible during engine inspection. This CARB exemption enables buying, installing, and driving with the Roush CAI in all 50 US states, making the component street-legal in all locations.

Application. This Roush Performance Cold Air Intake Kit is specially designed to fit the 2015 to 2017 F-150s equipped with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine. It is not compatible on Raptor models.

Will changing over to the Roush intake effect the warranty?

SandyD

  • According to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a vehicle manufacturer cannot void the warranty of your vehicle due to an aftermarket part unless they can prove that the aftermarket part was the cause of or contributed to the failure of the vehicle (15 U.S.C. 2302 (C)). This means that a vehicle's warranty cannot be "voided;" the dealer can only deny a claim if the stock part failed due to damage or unreasonable use. If you plan to install this Roush Cold Air Intake, we would still recommend reaching out to the dealership in which the vehicle was purchased, as they may have specified a particular component to void warranty.

    Great design

The 2015-17 f150 Roush CAI is a better design than than the previous model for the 2012-14 F150. This CAI comes with a complete air box and the air filter is a lot bigger. You will only see minor performance increase. Like most CAI for the F150s, it doesn't require a tune. If you want to get the most out of any CAI I recommend that you do get a tune.

Great Sound and Performance, fit and finish OK

This intake gives the truck a great sound and I would easily believe Roush's claim for hp and torque improvements. That said, the fit and finish did not meet my expectations, lots of plastic flashing and prevalent seam lines from manufacturing make the kit feel cheap and the air box does not fit tightly around the dirty air scoop/ram air inlet or the clean air tube so it ultimately will pull in a little hot air from the engine bay. Still the performance and sound outweigh those minor grievances

It fit like a factory part. So I'd give it a 5 for fit and finish. I felt no seat of the pants improvement and really no sound improvement either. I wish I'd have gone with the AFE stage2 unit.

    Surely Worth The Purchase

I would definitely recommend this CAI for anyone owning a 3.5 EB. Installation was fairly easy with no hiccups the way along. At startup you can obviously hear the difference when you push the accelerator with the hood open. In cab you can hear the air filtering more through the tubing and more turbo sound as well; pretty unique sound. With windows open you can hear the turbos clear as day. Do note that I have the Roush Cat-back exhaust which complements one another. You can feel the extra power at the wheels with a clean throttle response compared to stock; it's not HUGE but really noticeable.

    Added performance

Adding the Roush intake to the existing Roush exhaust has made some more HP and gains on throttle response and overall performance. I'm impressed by the overall gains from the intake and I also like the look and style of it. It's the largest intake that I've seen in a vehicle, but it goes very well with the amount of open space in the new 2016 F-150's engine bay.
