S550 Mustang Hood Options Explained

Shop S550 Hoods

The already aggressive lines of the S550 bring out the Mustang's character. Changing out the hood to help augment that look can capture the wild nature of your ride.

While the 2015+ Mustang experienced a total redesign, one of the most striking aspects of the redesign was its hood. This guide will go over the different options you have to replace the stock S550 Mustang hood.

The Stock S550 Mustang Hood

The stock S550 Mustang hood was a polarizing part of the redesign; some automotive enthusiasts loved it while others hated it. The 2015 Mustang hood carried on the tradition of the of the functional hood vents pioneered on the 2011-2014 S197 Mustang. The stock hood is made from steel which does help to contribute to the weight of the Mustang. The location of the weight pushes the weight bias over the front wheels making it “nose heavy,” but in the grand scheme of things is not excessively heavy.

The S550 hood features aggressive lines as well as a raised up hood line in the middle, giving it a modern muscle look. However, there are multiple options to improve the stock hood or replace it such as:

  • Aftermarket Mustang hoods
  • Aftermarket Mustang hood vents
  • Aftermarket Mustang hood scoops

S550 Mustang Hood Scoops

One of the easiest ways to modify the look of your 2015 Mustang is by adding a hood scoop. Hood scoops are generally fairly easy to apply and only require a bit of 3M automotive tape and a few measurements to make sure everything is centered. Mustang hood scoops typically feature a faux air scoop that is more for style than it is for function. While you can cut into the hood to make it a more functional design, it is not recommended.

S550 Mustang Hood Vents

While the 2015 Mustang comes with hood vents from the factory that work as functional heat extractors, you can modify them for improved appearance and function. There is a multitude of aftermarket options available to improve the look of the 2015 Mustang’s hood vents, one of which is aftermarket turn signal indicators.

Made popular by the California Special Mustang, you can replace your hood vents with functional turn signal indicators that flash when you put your turn signal on. However, if you want to keep the engine bay cool then you may want to keep the hood extractors/vents clear and use a stylized hood vent.

If you are not happy with the look of your S550’s hood, you can replace it with an aftermarket one that will add a more aggressive look. Aftermarket Mustang hoods are constructed from fiber glass and sometimes they are even made from carbon fiber. Both of which drastically reduce weight from the stock steel hood.

Aftermarket S550 Mustang hoods almost always feature a design which funnels in cooler atmospheric air or extracts hot engine bay air. Both of which:

  • Improve cooling
  • Reduce engine temperatures
  • Add to the functionality

Aftermarket Mustang hoods are fairly easy to install as they bolt right into where the stock hood came off. The hardest part of adding them is replacing the windshield washer squitters. Almost all options come pre-painted, however you can buy them unpainted and find a shop or paint them yourself.

Replacing the Factory Prop Rod: Mustang Hood Struts

Regardless of what you decide to do with your Mustang’s hood, replacing the factory prop rod with a set of hood struts is a crucial mod for any pony car owner. Hood struts make working on your Mustang so much easier while also cleaning up the appearance for car shows.
