Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

The SR Performance Shifter Base and Handle Gasket is available for any '82 to '04 V8, '93 to '01 Cobra, or '94 to '04 V6 Mustang with a T5 or T45 or a TR 3650 transmission. If you're looking to swap shifters, it's always a good idea to pick up a new gasket to replace the old worn-out ones to make sure you're covering all your bases for this perfect setup. This is a better option than other silicone or gasket makers because it is way more reliable. Installation is extremely simple and it works for almost any shifter out there with the three transmissions I just mentioned, so expect 1 out of 3 wrenches on our difficulty meter. Swapping shifters is great, especially when you're installing a short throw. But when it comes to taking apart your stock shifter, you'll 9 times out of 10 run into a crappier, ripped up shifter gasket that could be decades old, in which case you'll absolutely need a replacement and some of the alternative silicones or even gasket maker kits can leave unwanted noise and vibration because they are not the ideal solution. They're super temporary. Now this gives you a reliable silicone material, cut for your transmission to eliminate the risk of not applying enough Gasket Maker or RTV properly, and it more importantly eliminates that noise and vibration. It's 1/16ths of an inch thick and the kit here includes both the base gasket and for the handle and it's just under 20 bucks. In my opinion, this is well worth it. You could hit your local auto parts store and quickly pick up a quicker solution, like an RTV or whatever they have available, and you could be spending the same amount for something that won't last as long or be as good of a fix. The installation is beyond simple. I'm for sure giving it 1 out of 3 wrenches on our difficulty meter because it should be to get done in about 20 minutes or so in the driveway at home. When you're swapping your shifters or if you're just replacing a stock gasket and throwing the factory one back on, all you'll need to do is unscrew the shift knob and pop off the plastic trim to gain access to the shifter components. Once the boot comes off, use a ratchet and socket set to remove the old two bolts holding the shifter handle on. Then remove the four bolts holding the base to the transmission. From here, you can scrape off any remaining gasket pieces from the base. Be careful not to have debris fall into the trans, you want to make sure you're catching all that. From here, you can just lay the base gasket from the SR Performance into place, and pop the new or older shifter back on, and bolt it back down. The other gasket goes between the handle and the base where the original two bolts that you removed first popped off. Pop the bolts back on, then the boot, then the trim, then the shift knob, and you're good to go. Just to wrap things up here, if you're the owner of, like I said, an '82 to '04 V8, '93 to '01 Cobra, or a '94 to '04 V6 with either a T5, T45, or TR3650 transmission, you might want to check out the SR Performance Shifter Base and Handle Gasket Kit, which is available right here at americanmuscle.com

No More Mess. If you're installing a new shifter in your T5/T45 or TR3650 transmission but don't like the idea of using RTV silicone or gasket maker, invest in a new shifter base & handle gasket set and choose the no-mess, no-fuss installation instead. You'll reduce the chances of having a stuck bolt or and eliminate the possibility of getting silicone into your transmission by buying this gasket set. It's a smart investment to protect your transmission and it makes shifter install easy.

Eliminates Noise & Vibration. If you use silicone to install your shifter, you can get unnecessary noise and vibration. Using a complete gasket set will reduce the amount of vibrations coming through your transmission into your shifter. Plus, it can eliminate the possibility of metal-on-metal contact if you don't get a complete, thick, evenly distributed layer of silicone. And let's face it - who has time for that?

Easier Removal. Using a shifter base and handle gasket is a smart choice when you have to service your transmission, too. Trying to get your shifter off to get into your turret is a headache if it's on there with silicone. With a gasket, it's easy to remove and even reuse when re-installing your shifter.

Application. This SR Performance Shifter Base & Handle Gaskets are designed for use on all T5/T45 and TR3650 transmissions, including 1982-2004 V8, 1993-2001 Cobra and 1994-2004 V6 Mustangs.

Ask a Question

Can I use this gasket with the stock shifter? If so, will it leak since the stock shifter base is much thinner than, for example, a steeda base? Thank you for your time.

  • The SR Performance Shifter Base & Handle Gasket will work with the stock shifter. As long as the shifter base is true, it should not leak.

    Do not recommend

I do not recommend this gasket set, it did not fit properly as everytime I tightend down on the shifter base the gasket seem to squeeze out on each side. I pulled it off and used RTV silicone as I did not want to take any chances on it leaking. Wasted $11.00

    no good

I bought these in combination with a short throw shifter and put it all together in about two hours. It wasn't hard to install, but the darn thing has been leaking trans fluid ever since. I established the gasket did not properly mate the shifter with the base of the trans. I used RTV silicone as well to keep it from leaking, but that didn't work. It still leaks. I'm gonna tear it apart and redo it with a gasket I'll get form Advanced. AM did their job, but the part didn't do it. I'll always buy from AM, just not this gasket again. Thank you AM for great order handling and shipping. I don't blame you one bit!

    Does not fit!!!

This gasket is no good. It does not line up with holes on tranny and when tightened it squeezes out the side. Will be replacing with gasket in a tube . DO NOT WASTE $17!! On a good note shipping was fast as normal through AM.

Wow! As good as advertised. Total job took 30 minutes. I also purchased the gasket. Made for clean job. Tight shifter. Can't miss a gear now, it won't let you. I highly recommend this shifter.

    Disappointed in this gasket

After my initial installation of this gasket, I would have rated it with five stars however after driving the car I am rating it with one star. The gasket fit the bolt pattern well but after tightening the bolts, it pushed the gasket out with approx. 1/8" visible along each side. It should be noted that this was not the result of over tightening the bolts. The gasket ended up leaking from the front edge so I replaced it with high temp RTV which is working perfectly. With as many problems as are reported here, it makes me wonder why the manufacturer does not use a standard gasket material.

A must when replacing the stock shifter

When replacing the stock shifter, or any shifter for that matter. It is well worth it to replace the worn gasket with this piece to help keep the noise coming from the shifter area down a bit. It does help reduce the noise and keep it a bit quieter in the cabin.

    Not the best gasket

When i put the shifter base gasket on and tightened it down the gasket just smashed out the edges, i didnt even crank down yet. The material its made out of is poor. after having a leak trying to use this, i ripped it off and used a silicone gasket instead. Much better results

    Must Have

When I originally put my new shifter in I used a RTV sealant as the casket. I'm sure it worked nice but I just didn't feel like it was doing the job as effectively as a gasket would. I am so happy of my decision to make this purchase. Not only was it much easier to install this but it also had a necessary part that I didn't even think of...it had a gasket that goes where the shifter handle connects to the shifter base. Very happy with this purchase!

    Cheap, easy security.

This gasket set fit perfectly and worked great for my Steeda Tri-Ax shifter. I feel it helped eliminate some noise and created a good seal on the base of the shifter. Easier than silicone.

Shifter Base Handle Gasket - T5/T45

I try not to give negative reviews, but this product did not impress me. My wife got me an SR Shifter and this gasket for Christmas. I really like the shifter but I did not use the gasket. It did not fit on my 1999 GT vert. If I line up the left side, the right side would hang over and not line up. Only about a 1\16" would sit on the mounting area of the trans, the rest would hang over. Used Permatex. All is good. Going to return it.

    Speed Safety

Opting to purchase the Shifter Base and Handle Gasket seriously saved time and effort on installing my shifter! By not having to apply a sealant made the install almost effortless, and the piece of mind alone that I have from not worrying about having accidentally dropped some into the transmission is worth every penny!!!

    Not worth it.

I bought this at the same time that I bought my Mgw shifter. I was hoping it would be a easier, less messy substitute in place of the silicone. It was so hard to keep in place when putting my new shifter on that i just gave up on it. I ended up using the silicone instead and that was much easier.
