Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, everyone. I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com. And I'm gonna be taking a closer look at a very affordable coil-over kit from SR Performance fitting your '79 to '04 solid rear axle Mustang. These coil-overs from SR will be an alternative to those other big brand name products on the market but won't come with that big brand name price tag. Now, whether it's suspension components like these coil-overs here or other modifications, SR Performance will perform without breaking the bank. I'm sure a lot of you guys watching this video are already familiar with what a set of aftermarket coil-overs can do, but if not, here's what you need to know. A set of coil-overs like the SR option here basically combines two vital parts of your Mustang's suspension, the springs and dampers, into one easy to install, relatively affordable package that most importantly gives you the ability to address your rod height whenever you want. Now, this is something that isn't exactly possible with a traditional set of springs, shocks, and struts. Besides that height adjustability, these coil-overs from SR Performance will no doubt improve your ride quality and handling performance by replacing the old and more than likely worn out stuff in your Fox body or SM.95. The coil-over kit itself includes both the coil-overs for the front setup here, already preassembled, spring and strut, basically meaning you won't have to mess with any spring compressors. Just bolt on and go. In addition to the fronts, of course you will receive the rear, which is a brand new shock setup along with the springs and adjustable perch here. Now, this setup will not include brand new caster camber plates, but it is something we highly recommend here at AmericanMuscle.com to really dial in that optimal alignment settings, especially if you plan on going low, which these coil-overs will certainly allow. So if you are interested in checking those out, you can always do so on the product page or by clicking on the link below. Speaking of low, these coil-overs from SR Performance will allow you drop your Fox body or SM.95 up to three inches, which judging by some of the customer submitted images here on the site, is essentially enough to allow you to slam the car to the ground. So be sure to check out some of those images if you get the chance. The process of lowering your ride with these coil-overs is pretty simple. You're gonna use these two spanner wrenches included with the kit to adjust the collars on either the rear or front setups. Basically, take your time and make sure to measure so you get everything nice and equal. Getting to that install one more time, again, since you do not need a spring compressor with these coil-overs here, the install is very straightforward, and I even recommend my novice mechanics out there to give this one a shot. Now it should take you roughly four hours or so from start to finish, so if it does take you a little longer, don't get discouraged. But either way, if you would like to talk to a Mustang expert a little bit more about the coil-overs themselves or about the actual install, feel free to reach out anytime. So if you're looking to replace the 10 to 20 plus year old suspension in your Fox body or SM.95 and you'd like to have the ability to adjust the ride height to your own personal preference, then you won't be disappointed when checking out the very affordable options from SR Performance which you can find right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Performance Handling. Improve your Mustangs handling and give it a suspension worthy of a true track car with an SR Performance V1 Height Adjustable Coilover Kit. A SR Performance V1 Coil Over kit will lower your Mustangs center of gravity to reduce body roll resulting in flat cornering for over all better handling performance.

Adjustable Ride Height. Lower your Mustang's stance 1" to 3" front and rear for improved cornering and a muscular look on the street with this SR Performance V1 Coil Over Kit.

Bolt-on Design. SR Performance designed their Mustang Coil-Over Kit to be an easy, bolt-on conversion with absolutely no cutting or welding required for installation.

Recommended Upgrade. It is highly recommend to replace your factory caster camber plates with a set of SR Performance Coil Over Caster Camber Plates when installing these coil overs on your Mustang in order to get your suspension back into perfect alignment. SR Performance Coil Over Caster Camber Plates are available for the 1979-1993 and 1994-2004 Mustangs, please see drop down option above.

Application. This SR Performance V1 Height Adjustable Coilover Kit is designed for use on the 1979 to 2004 Mustangs, including the LX, V6, GT, Bullitt, Mach 1 and 93-98 SVT Cobra models. Does not fit IRS equipped SVT Cobra models.

Please Note: This SR Performance V1 Coil-Over Kit is not compatible with the standard SR Performance 3-Bolt Caster Camber Plates part # 41293.

Is this package daily driver friendly? My suspension is currently stock, but wearing out. I'd like better handling but don't want a ride that is much harder than stock. How would these work as a daily driver modification? Also, I noticed that the front spring rates are less than half as stiff as any other springs AM offers. What is the reasoning for such low front spring rates?

ab01gt

  • Yes. It will have excellent ride quality and even better handling characteristics. I personally love the kit on my DD and would recommend it to anyone who drives their car to work everyday.

I ordered the coil over kit and then the camber plates. I am having trouble putting the front coil overs on. I am unable to get the bolt on top to secure them. There is still about half an inch left before it even clears. Is there any tips on how to get them on?

Torque98

  • With the SR Performance V1 Height Adjustable Coilover Kit, it could be a little difficult to install, if the perches are adjusted to a high position. We would recommend threading the perch to the lowest setting, and install the coilovers and once they are in, you may then adjust those perches to achieve desired ride height.

should you still replace your front and rear spring isolators? do they even use or need isolators..

Bradley

  • They are no longer needed after installing the coil overs. The rears come with new spacers to take the place of the stock rubber or aftermarket polyurethane isolators and the front spring pocket will be empty. Hope this helps!

I know this sounds weird but I want to lift my mustang about 3 inches. I don't want to go the cheap route and get spring spacers though. I know that coil overs allow you to lower your cars ride height but would I be able to increase the ride height with these as well?

StrangeQube

  • Unfortunately the SR Performance V1 Height Adjustable Coilover Kit is only able to lower the car, cannot lift with these coilovers.

Are the front shocks gas filled? The bracket on the bottom of mine has broken and I need to know if it can be welded or what.

ShawnH

  • The SR Performance V1 Height Adjustable Coilover Kit should not be welded, as this can compromise the integrity of the shock body or strut body, causing serious safety concerns.

    Strongly disappointed in this

After all the time spent putting this in and still hearing noise after 2 alignments I should have taken the time and money to invest in another product instead. And I keep having problems with SR products. Won't be buying SR again.

    Disappointed

Disappointed with this product. Spent two weekends working on it. It needs instructions. Ended up paying for two front end alignments to try and get rid of the springs rubbing up against the inner well. Still rubs will have to get another alignment. I wouldnt have bought this set had i known.

    cheap

I had this professionally installed, but the driver side front spring makes a knocking noise when I turn left similar to the noise it makes when first installed when it's settling. I've taken it back to the installer to have the height adjusted, but there's nothing more that can be done. Just poor quality. The rubber boots to keep dirt out has also been torn up. Also, if you plan on getting wider tires in the back you need to look into getting your fenders rolled. People complaining about the car scraping should know better, of course that's gonna happen, but I'm disappointed that the "springing" noise won't go away on the front driver side. Save up and get the more expensive presumably higher quality option.

WARNING! Read if you have 315s on the rear

These are a great handling improvement over stock, the car is now like driving on rails. However, they are a bit stiff, mine seem to be settling and becoming softer, so I will have to see where that goes. Anyways. I paired these with rear Sumitomo 315/35R17 Tires, on 17x10.5 saleens. This is my warning, I learned that on lower settings, these rub with stock unrolled fenders, But also people in the back seat will cause these to rub even on slightly higher settings. I have not decided whether to lift the rear to an even higher setting and test with people in the car, or to just roll the fenders and get it over with.

    Great product

Installed rear coilovers.theyre great now but had issues with getting car lowered to where i needed it.the problem is this kit has no instructions.its so easy to install but when you need to adjust the height????????????? So let me help someone so they dont deal with trial and error like i did. To lower your vehicle you loosen the adjusting screw counter clockwise.i didnt know this and it took me so much time to get it where i wanted, when it could have saved me hours if they had instructions.overall now its done,my car looks sick!!!!!!!!!! I love this kit

    Great for the money

You always get what you pay for...so if you are going to be racing and going crazy it may be time to think of something else. If you are street driving and want compliments then here you go. I purchased these with the caster camber plates and had an interesting time figuring everything out but for half the price of the other kits I am super happy. With the alignment and discounts I was under a grand out the door. Perfect! Now my car is lower than ever and I get compliments everwhere. Oh I just fyi...get new washers for caster camber plates. And I used red locktite on new nuts on top of struts. Don't waste your time with the nylock ones...there is not enough thread for the nylon to grip anyway. I had mine too low at first and heard a little binding. 1/4 inches higher and all set! Picture of mine is in parking lot after I raised it the 1/4 inch!

    Not impressed.

I ordered these around November and currently have them on my car. I've adjusted them 3 times already and for some odd reason the car returns to a slammed state. I'm not sure how but it seems to keep getting more and more low the more I drive it. I'm not sure if I got a defective batch or the way I tighten them is incorrect but it's very frustrating. I was honestly expecting more from this product.... On the bright side my ride has gotten a little better comparing it to lowering springs.

    Extremely disappointed

Complete waste of time and money. I bought them to have some choice in the ride height. There is no choice, car scrapes everywhere unless adjusted to the highest setting. They pop, klunk, and rattle when turning and going over bumps and generally feel unsafe. I wish I could return them. Out almost $1000 when you count the required caster/camber plates.

    SR performance Coil overs

I ordered these about a year ago, never installed them and I ordered the camber caster plates with them but unfortunately I got the wrong plates. I haven't had a chance to drive with them yet I am very excited to see the stance on my mustang after. Great product especially for the price.

Great Kit, Price, Fitment is good

This kit was the first suspension kit I have ever installed on my Mustang GT or any other car. I spent a considerable amount of time trying to get the Caster Camber plates and the Strut towers to line up and fit through the engine bay hole. You will have to measure each side to ensure the ride height is equal for an alignment. The problem I ran into was that there seemed to be either excess bump stop Rubber pieces or that the cone shaped ones were to tall. I shaved my cone shaped bump stops and it fit after some size decrease. I have it currently installed and raised all the way up. It makes noise on the front end when going over speed bumps do to the tightness of the springs being compressed. When I lower it all the way I hear no noises. I did notice a great performance increase in handling for the every day driver. I love the kit, I just wish the instructions identified what pieces may not be needed or may need modification. This was my first time installing though. I am sure I made rookie delays.

    DON'T BUY Coilovers Snap!

Don't buy these they make the car look great but after 4 months the right front snapped. American Muscle customer service is great and sent me a whole new coil-over, but in 3 weeks the front left snapped as well.

    Get what you pay for

I bought these coilovers with the camber plates the difference you can notice right away you. But the build quality is bad from my experience. I went through some railroad tracks(very bumpy) not even hard going around 40 I heard a metal snap. Didn't think about then as it turned one of the coilovers snapped I had to get my mustang towed. Went to stock suspension. I had to buy camber plates and the camber still won't align right. Safe to say I will buy these coilovers or any SR product ever.

    Disappointed

I took my time installing these. When done, it was too low even though I raised the coil overs to the max. Front was rubbing against the fender and rear was so low the my sway bar was hitting the exhaust. My diff cover with girdle busted the gas vapor hose. Springs are too soft. Thinking of replacing Springs with 275 or 325 in front and installed airshocks in rear. Rear is good now. Total bummer. Next year's project will be to replace it all. Should've stayed with Eibach shocks and coil overs and rear Springs.

Not as adjustable as I would have liked

I bought these coilovers for an adjustable suspension so I could easily transition between street and racing. These made my car extremely LOW and will not adjust much higher. They are advertised as a 1-3 inch range, but I got more like 2.5-3 inches, so a range of maybe half an inch. That means the car is almost un-driveable on the street even when adjusted to the highest setting. I even bottom out pulling into my garage going over a small hump. As to racing performance, they are certainly better than my stock shocks that I replaced, but not as smooth and tight as I would have expected. Love Amercan Muscle and always have a good experience with them, but I would not recommend this product.

    Love the new look!

Really simple install but all of the amazingly tight bolts and springs will slow you down. Love the adjustability, the new look, and the inproved handling. If you are looking to slam your car- my rear height adjustment is maxed out and there is still a 1.5inch wheel gap and the front can still go lower by a lot. But im sure it depends on what wheels you have.
