Regain Lost Power. Get back the power and torque your belt-driven accessories steal. As hard as it may be to believe, you can regain from 8 to 10 "free" horsepower with Steeda's underdrive pulleys. These pulleys reduce engine parasitic drag from your accessories by about 25% and even improve fuel economy.

Superior Materials. Steeda underdrive pulleys are manufactured from nodular iron, and far exceed the quality of the factory pulleys. The one-piece crankshaft pulley uses a high-tech injection molded bonded rubber damper, making it far more durable than other manufactures "piggyback style" underdrive pulleys.

SFI Approved. Steeda underdrive pulleys are SFI approved for use by all major race sanctioning bodies.

Application. These Steeda Underdrive Pulleys are specifically designed for use on the 1996 to 1999 SVT Cobra and 2001 Bullitt Mustangs equipped with the 4.6L V8.

Note: Coupon codes cannot be applied to this product.

Technical Note. Midway through the production run for the 2001 model year Ford changed the design of the water pump on the 4.6L engine. The older style pump produced from 1996 to mid 2001 had a longer shaft. In January of 2001 the design of the pump was changed to a shorter shaft. This necessitated a change in the design of the pump pulley.

My 2001 Bullitt has a Vortech on it? I've heard you cant run these on 2001 mustangs with a Vortech on them. Is this true?

is the waterpump pulley different size than stock, and spinning the water pump slower than stock? Does this affect cooling?

    • The Steeda Underdrive Pulleys will slightly reduce the water pumps efficiency due to the slower rotational speed. We have not run into overheating issues as a result of running this setup.

      Steeda Underdrive Pulleys

Pretty good for a bolt a little more jam out of my 97 SVT Cobra. Nothing crazy but you do notice a little power gain. All in all happy with the product.

      More HP

This was installed in my son's '99 SVT Cobra. It took us about 3 hours to install. The hardest part was getting the old altenator pulley off. Everything else was straight forward. I would recommend the correct install tools. we had a set from the local parts store. My son says he really feels a difference in 5th gear. He feels it definately added some HP. Pricing is competetive.

C'mon.. it's from Steeda. Why would you even need a review?

I was having my serpentine belt/tensioner replaced and transmission fluid changed, so I figured that to be a good excuse for upgrading the pulleys. I had the shop do it since they were performing the other maintenance. Install time was about 30-45 minutes. In regards to fitment, I was told/shown by my tech that there is maybe only 1/8-1/4" clearance between the larger pulley and steel smog line, so just be aware. Also, these pulleys will work fine with your OEM belt. There is a noticeable performance gain, it's not earth shattering by any means, but you will notice a little extra get up. Some will say that your gas mileage will increase due to running the other accessories slower. That may or may not just be a placebo effect. I'll say that I did notice maybe one or two MPG more, but it's negligible at best. All in all, this is a great product from a top-notch manufacturer. Definitely a relatively cheap way and effective way to increase the power of Cobra.

Best bolt on part I've ever bought.

I actually installed these pulleys on my 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis (4.6), and so far I am very impressed. Off the line and into mid-RPM range, you get a noticeable push. I put took a drive to see how the gas mileage increased. I went from 20 mpg to close to 25 mpg (highway). If you haven't already installed these, you are missing out. Installation is simple, provided you have the necessary tools. I definitely DO NOT recommend going with a cheaper piggyback setup. You get what you pay for, and for your mustang, you should get the best. Steeda or nothing! :)

      Excellent quality pulleys!

These pulleys went on like a dream, the quality was excellent, i had my water pump and alternator pulleys sand blasted and i powdercoated them my self. The crank pulley and balancer is a high quality one piece design. I was a little skeptical as far as what kind of performance gains they would make, but was very impressed at how much i actually felt they woke my cobra right up, and would recommend these to anyone.

      99 Cobra

When you take all the variables into account, this product delivers a noticeable performance gain, while being affordable. The installation was straight-forward however, I would recommend the three-way pulley tool. I got one loaned to me for 28.00 at O'Reilly's ( you get the deposit back ). There is a instant difference that you can feel. It not a supercharger, but considering the price point, you will smile. In particular, the low end revving is better, which we all know is the 4.6L motors weak spot. The quality is there as with all Steeda products.

      Underdrive Pulleys are your Friend!

The Steeda Underdrive Pulleys for my 99 Cobra are awesome! Extremely well made. Installation was mostly a breeze and the instructions were dead on. However, I highly recommend using an impact wrench (as the instructions suggest) to remove your alternator pulley. If you don't have one, remove your alternator and go to a shop and have them remove the pulley and install the new one. I ended up breaking off a few fins on my alternator because I tried to use a screwdriver to keep it from spinning while I used a regular wrench to remove the bolt on the pulley. I ended up ordering a PA Performance replacement alternator, which was probably a good idea since it produces a lot more amps at lower rpms than the stock alternator and it is spinning slower. The only problem I had with any of the parts was with Steeda alternator pulley. It rubbed on the case of the PA Performance Alternator. I ended up using the pulley that came with the alternator and it works fine and is even has a little more underdrive to it, I believe. How is performance now? Some of the forums warned me about problems with my accessories and even my oil pump if I rev'ed over 5500 rpm too often. I haven't had any issues. My Cobra is faster and throttle response is much better. I highly recommended Steeda Underdrive Pulleys!

      Steeda Underdrive Pulley Set

I am not sure of the hp gained after I installed the Steeda pulley set on my 1996 Cobra SVT, but it is definitely quicker off the line. I would highly recommend purchasing the Steeda set versus other brands and adhere strongly to the 1996-1997 114 - 121 ft lb torque value for the crankshaft pulley and 66/37 ft lb torquing series for 1998-2001 model stangs. This is a relatively inexpensive aftermarket upgrade that was easy to install which provides you with outstanding results. The only item most backyard mechanics will not have do perform this project is the Permatex Hi-Temp Black RTV Silicone gasket maker for the crankshaft pulley keyway slot and a three-post pulley puller (which I borrowed from O'Reilly Autoparts. In addition, torque the four water pump pulley bolts between 15 and 21 ft lbs...cris-cross pattern (according to Chilton).
