Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Stephanie with americanmuscle.com here with a review of the STEEDA IRS Subframe Braces for 2015 and up Fastback Mustangs. We're gonna talk about a few different topics when it comes to these subframe braces but mostly we're gonna talk about the construction and the functionality of these braces and the install as well. I'll get into more detail later, but I can tell you right now that the install for these braces is easy. You're looking at a one out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter since these are a direct bolt-on item. The STEEDA IRS Subframe Braces are gonna be something that you should check out if you're looking to minimize some of that rear subframe movement and combat some of the wheel-hop that's notorious with the S550s. We all love getting power to the ground and that's kind of hard to do with so much rear subframe movement and wheel-hop, but these braces are designed to eliminate the deflection in the rear subframe that the stock bushings allow for. So just looking at these on the table here, these have a three-point triangular design, with the general idea behind these being stabilization through tying together three chassis points, the lower control arm and tow link mount area, the rear subframe and the frame rail. Now these are three areas that are very strong naturally, so tying them together gives a good base of support for the rear subframe. And keep in mind that the rear subframe is really only four bolts, so that leaves a lot of room for improvement. The other thing that I wanted to point out here is that these braces are going to utilize existing holes. This leads to two good things, one is that you won't have to do any type of modification to get these installed, and they're direct bolt-on upgrade. And two is that since you aren't modifying anything, you're just adding support, you're not going to be adding any NVH to the ride quality of the car. Now these are tubular Chromoly steel, and they're also powder-coated silver, which you're not really going to see unless you're under the car, but the powder-coat does give some corrosion resistance. Keep in mind that while these braces are going to work to reduce wheel hop and keep the rear planted better under load, these are only one component of the IRS and there are a handful of other pieces and options that you can look into depending on what you want to do with your Mustang. What I like about these is that they aren't going to create any additional noise or harshness in the suspension. I'd say that these are a good foundation-building mod in the sense that they help you set your Mustang up for the performance that you expect out of it. As far as price, these braces are right in between $200 and $300, and right now these are the only one of their kind that are available. You don't have another brand that's offering the same type of product so there's nothing to compare it to price-wise, but I will say that this does happen to be one of the less expensive options out there when you look at other options on how to reduce wheel hop. When it comes to the install here, it's really pretty easy. Overall, this is a one-wrench install on our scale and should take about just an hour to complete. The braces are side-specific and can only go one way, but we're basically looking at a few nuts and bolts. You need a few sockets, a ten millimeter Allen key and a torque wrench for sure since all of the bolts will need to be torqued down. Wrapping things up, the STEEDA IRS Subframe Braces are gonna tie in three points of the chassis to help stop rear subframe movement and help put some power to the ground and avoid some wheel hop. They're tubular Chromoly steel and easy to install too. As always, you can check them out more online and see what you think for yourself. And for all things Mustang, keep it right here at americanmuscle.com.

Eliminate IRS Subframe Movement. The Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) of the S550 Mustang is notorious for moving under acceleration, hard braking and even spirited driving, but by installing a set of Steeda IRS Subframe Braces you can eliminate rear sub frame movement and reduce dreaded wheel hop to improve overall handling performance.

Tubular Construction. Steeda designs and manufactures their IRS Subframe Braces in the USA from tubular 4130 chromoly steel in a 3-point triangular design for superior strength and features a durable powdercoated silver metal flake finish for corrosion resistance.

Easy Bolt-on Installation. Steeda's IRS Subframe Braces are designed to be a simple bolt-on upgrade that  utilizes the existing stock mounting points with no welding, cutting or extra modifications required for a straight forward bolt-on install.

Application. These Steeda IRS Subframe Braces are specifically designed for use on 2015-2017 Fastback Mustangs, including the V6, EcoBoost and GT models. Does not fit convertible models.

would an alignment be necessary after this install?

CJG

  • You should not need an alignment after the install of these subframe braces. Though, if you plan to do any other suspension work, an alignment is highly recommended.

    Truly a bolt on upgrade

I repainted mine red to match my theme. I wonder if plastic cap on either end of each brace will allow water/dirt to get into brace over time and degrade it from the inside out because there is no paint in the inside to protect the metal. Initial quality is nice, paint was good too, and part arrived in pristine condition. Install would of been a tad bit easier if bolts were identified other than by mm length in instructions because the Allen bolts are different lengths and the longer bolt goes on the furtherest back hole because it has to engage a factory nut welded on and there shorter bolt isn't long enough to full go through nut. A less mechanically inclined person could easily miss this because bolts are not that different. I haven't driven her hard enough yet to notice a difference, but I know they'll definitely make one!! Thanks Steeda and AM

V6 2016 with installed not track tested

hi all 3 stars on bank for $ and improvement only because winter here and not tested yet. Went in pretty good, but was not real happy with the silver P.C. as I wanted it to be black and blend in. I truck bed coated mine on warm day last month and then poured in some undercoat/chassis coat into them and sealed the plugs in. My V6 manual box likes to wiggle it's rear like a stripper on shore day which is why I wanted these. I will re-report when I can get some road time. ALSO made made many many mods. CAI, (Airade and SCT tuner) BBK Shorty Headers BBK 73mm Throttle Body Magnaflow 10999 cat back (with exhaust wrap from Ford Strut Tower brace (tweened so no washers needed.) them up to headers.) home built radiator rock guard (turned out pretty mine.) undercoating and tinting updated tri-axle speakers (in modified factory bucket) and more.

Steeda subframa vs bmr cradle bushing kit

I purchase steeda irs subfame and bmr irs cradle bushing kit in this same time just find out u are able to use one or the other not both because to install bmr kit u have to remove old bracket from the car and use new one from the kit but if u do that u wont be able to install subframe because on this old bracket u have one of the points u attach the subframe so u have to choose!! and i did pic the subframe because the install is way more easy rear end stronger and the ride comfort don't change i am really happy with this product so to all my mustang family dont do this same mistake and don't order both...lol

    IRS Subframe Brace

Brace was received quickly and just as described by American Muscle. The braces installed easily using ramps and hand tools. They lined up exactly as per the directions and bolted right in to place. The car is a lot tighter than before in the tail end but these braces did not stop the vibration that I have in drive line at speeds over 65mph. I am still happy with the install and the overall feeling when driving the car.

    Still have wheel hop!!!

This alone will not get rid of your wheel hop, it made a slight improvement. Not sure I'd buy this again, I'll have to buy more suspension mods to cure the wheel hop.

    Great Product

Noticeable difference in the rear stiffness. Installation was easy. When I installed the drivers side, I had to unscrew a bolt on frame so I could use that bolt hole to secure part of the brace. After removing the bolt with ease, it was very difficult to put the bolt back. This is a brand new 2017 mustang GT. I had to muscle the bolt back in. I was worried that the bolt would break so I took my time. An easy project took me about an hour to complete. If you don't have the same issue as me, you can expect to spend about 20-30 minutes to install. 2017 mustang GT with performance pack, roush phase 2 supercharger. I needed the extra stability.

    Steeda IRS Subframe Braces

Let me start out by saying this is a must have mod for anyone that want's their 2015-2017 Mustang to handle. I came out of a C-6 Corvette to get this car and was highly disappointed with the way my 2016 Mustang GT handled, but then again my base line was high coming out of the Vette. so after putting on Ford Racing suspension,K- Brace, Tower strut bar there was something missing in the handling department, the rear end felt floaty and lose driving at any kind of speed. Put on the IRS Braces and they tightened everything up! This car handles like a dream. This was the missing part it needed. I now love getting in the Mustang and driving. Feels and handles as good if not better than any other sports car I've ever driven. A must have Mod.

    IRS Subframe Brace

So, I ordered this piece directly from Steeda, but figured it would be important to pass on my experience with this product. I was able to install the driver side withe complete ease, but the passenger side was legitimately a nightmare. The top and bottom portions were able to fit completely fine, but the middle portion was about an inch short from where it would attach to the body. I contacted Steeda and numerous emails and phone calls later they refused to issue a refund and essentially said "oh well". I am unaware if this is just a 2016 issue or just overall bad luck.

Installed these on my 2015 gt. Install time was less than an hour . Only drawback I had to ream out front mounting holes a bit. Other than that, they bolted right up and paired with the steeda verticle links and steeda cradle sub frame bushings it 99 got rid of the terrible wheel hop. I highly recommend these for your s550.
