    Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Stephanie with americanmuscle.com here with a review of the STEEDA IRS Subframe Braces for 2015 and up Fastback Mustangs. We're gonna talk about a few different topics when it comes to these subframe braces but mostly we're gonna talk about the construction and the functionality of these braces and the install as well. I'll get into more detail later, but I can tell you right now that the install for these braces is easy. You're looking at a one out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter since these are a direct bolt-on item. The STEEDA IRS Subframe Braces are gonna be something that you should check out if you're looking to minimize some of that rear subframe movement and combat some of the wheel-hop that's notorious with the S550s. We all love getting power to the ground and that's kind of hard to do with so much rear subframe movement and wheel-hop, but these braces are designed to eliminate the deflection in the rear subframe that the stock bushings allow for. So just looking at these on the table here, these have a three-point triangular design, with the general idea behind these being stabilization through tying together three chassis points, the lower control arm and tow link mount area, the rear subframe and the frame rail. Now these are three areas that are very strong naturally, so tying them together gives a good base of support for the rear subframe. And keep in mind that the rear subframe is really only four bolts, so that leaves a lot of room for improvement. The other thing that I wanted to point out here is that these braces are going to utilize existing holes. This leads to two good things, one is that you won't have to do any type of modification to get these installed, and they're direct bolt-on upgrade. And two is that since you aren't modifying anything, you're just adding support, you're not going to be adding any NVH to the ride quality of the car. Now these are tubular Chromoly steel, and they're also powder-coated silver, which you're not really going to see unless you're under the car, but the powder-coat does give some corrosion resistance. Keep in mind that while these braces are going to work to reduce wheel hop and keep the rear planted better under load, these are only one component of the IRS and there are a handful of other pieces and options that you can look into depending on what you want to do with your Mustang. What I like about these is that they aren't going to create any additional noise or harshness in the suspension. I'd say that these are a good foundation-building mod in the sense that they help you set your Mustang up for the performance that you expect out of it. As far as price, these braces are right in between $200 and $300, and right now these are the only one of their kind that are available. You don't have another brand that's offering the same type of product so there's nothing to compare it to price-wise, but I will say that this does happen to be one of the less expensive options out there when you look at other options on how to reduce wheel hop. When it comes to the install here, it's really pretty easy. Overall, this is a one-wrench install on our scale and should take about just an hour to complete. The braces are side-specific and can only go one way, but we're basically looking at a few nuts and bolts. You need a few sockets, a ten millimeter Allen key and a torque wrench for sure since all of the bolts will need to be torqued down. Wrapping things up, the STEEDA IRS Subframe Braces are gonna tie in three points of the chassis to help stop rear subframe movement and help put some power to the ground and avoid some wheel hop. They're tubular Chromoly steel and easy to install too. As always, you can check them out more online and see what you think for yourself. And for all things Mustang, keep it right here at americanmuscle.com.

Eliminate IRS Subframe Movement. The Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) of the S550 Mustang is notorious for moving under acceleration, hard braking and even spirited driving, but by installing a set of Steeda IRS Subframe Braces you can eliminate rear sub frame movement and reduce dreaded wheel hop to improve overall handling performance.

Tubular Construction. Steeda designs and manufactures their IRS Subframe Braces in the USA from tubular 4130 chromoly steel in a 3-point triangular design for superior strength and features a durable powdercoated silver metal flake finish for corrosion resistance.

Easy Bolt-on Installation. Steeda's IRS Subframe Braces are designed to be a simple bolt-on upgrade that  utilizes the existing stock mounting points with no welding, cutting or extra modifications required for a straight forward bolt-on install.

Application. These Steeda IRS Subframe Braces are specifically designed for use on 2015-2019 Fastback Mustangs, including the V6, EcoBoost and GT models. Does not fit convertible models.

What would be the difference between attaching these braces vs. SR Performance IRS Tie Down Kit?

    • The Steeda IRS Subframe Braces are designed to brace the rear subframe and prevent the subframe from flexing in relation to the unibody. The SR Performance IRS Tie Down Kit is designed to prevent flex at the bushings for the IRS mounting. While both will work toward a similar goal of reducing wheel hop, they do so very differently. The braces will provide the largest reduction in wheel hop.

Well made product. Excellent idea to strengthen the subframe connection to the body. Surprising that this is the only one available and has not been copied.

      Subframe brace on 2019 PP1

Great affordable product. Helped stiffen up rearend. This along with Steeda vertical links helps keep the rear planted and cuts wheel spin down. I found the Roush instructions to be poor for such a big company. Do yourself a favor and watch a few videos on YouTube for a more straightforward install.

      worth the money

Vehicle feels much more stable in the rear around corners and launches. Highly recommended even for casual driving. Great upgrade if you’re not looking to break the bank. Will also be upgrading the upper control arms and vertical links in the near future.

      Awesome

Very easy to install. Before install I felt a flexing of rear during accel and decel. It is completely gone now. Feels a bit tighter during cornering too. The brace tucks in nicely under car, so no loss of clearance.

      Easy for a novice but....

Easy installation, definitely recommend installing the Steeda Jacking Rails first though. The rear end feels much tighter and sturdy. Alignment was good as far as matching the holes on the 2017 Mustang GT. My only complaint is the lone center mount had a 5mm gap between the IRS asembly and the Mustang body. So I just kept tightening it until it got close but used the extra washers that came with the kit to close the gap...Therefore the 3star review. They need to close that gap or provide proper spacers. Hope this helps beginners like me.

The shipping process was fairly quick and the install took about 30-40 minutes. Helps that I have access to a lift and it makes it much easier and quicker to install.

Subframe Braces on my '19 GT

The rear definitely feels more stable/stiffer and improves handling imho. I would recommend these to others. I had my car on jack stands to install. Install was straight fwd however the rear bolt which you have to use a nut on was a bit of a pain to tighten due to the tight space. Use a wrench and not a ratchet to hold the nut ( trust me or else your ratchet will get stuck under the axle and boot, smh). Front 3 bolts to 45 ft lbs 2 rear bolts to 55ft lbs. Enjoy!

      Awesome!

I recently got my 2016 and it had a lot of mods already on it, except for the IRS. After reading up on the IRS decided I'd do this as one of my first performance installs. Went in smoothly. And what a difference! Feels much more stable on acceleration, and also when taking a turn. Really happy I decided to go with these! You won't be disappointed! Thanks Steeda and AM!

      Excellent Modification

Very simple installation and tightened up the rear end. I just didn't plan this out and ended up doing other mods later that required me to drop the sub frame so I had to remove these in order to do that. But easy to remove and re-install. Did these before any other mod and even by themselves it firmed up the rear end and I could tell an immediate difference. Looking forward to seeing if other mods make as big of a difference.

Installed in less then 10 minutes. Also installed with bmr k member brace and eibach sport line springs, definitely notice a difference in wheel hop on harsh acceleration. Didn’t 100 remove wheel hop but did more then expected too. Now going to add a few more parts to stiffen the irs.

      Decent braces, some engineering issues

The subframe braces were well put together, but one of the holes in the body mount was misaligned, requiring me to oval out the hole to make them fit. Steeda also decided to laser cut their logo into the brace mount beside one of the frame mount holes, creating a weak point and resulting in the tab being bent at that point when it was delivered to me.

      Simple but very effective design

Decided to go with these on my S550 after having to remove the Steeda IRS bushing inserts because they move my pinion angle on my differential which I just had rebuilt. It caused my new DSS one piece driveshaft to vibrate. Another reason for installing these is because I had to also remove my SR Cradle Lockout kit because the left brace didnt line up causing it to damage the cradle bolt to strip. After my shop removed and replaced my OEM cradle plates i decided I still wanted to stiffen and eliminate rear wheel hop i went with these Steeda Subframe Braces. And these were easy quick to install and they really do stiffen up the rearend. No noticeable wheel hop. I would recommend these instead of the Cradle Lockout Kits.
