    Review & Install Video

Dave from AmericanMuscle, with me today is the TCI ratchet shifter for the 05-09 automatic GT and V6 Mustang. The idea behind the ratchet shifter is this: put some excitement and some precise control over your gear changes, back into driving your automatic Mustang. The TCI ratchet shift goes directly in place of the factory unit, no drilling or any kind of special modifications required. This part will allow you to manually shift your automatic with precise control and safety in mind. Safety, because you’re not going to miss any shifts and overshift or downshift too soon, with this neat ratcheting design, it allows you to precisely go from park into 1st and everything between. Here we are in our automatic GT, it’s the 05-09 variety so it’s a 5 speed automatic, at this point we’ve got the car in drive, I’m just going to drive round for a couple of minutes, get an idea of how it shifts on its own. Then we’ll throw it back with the stock shifter into 1st and go through all 5 gears, giving an idea of how it shifts when I shift it. The reason being we’re about to take this shifter out and as we mentioned go with the TCI ratchet shifter and come back out and try it again. Okay so we’ve just simulated normal driving, now I’m going to go ahead and throw this shifter down, put it into 1st, and go through the gears like I mentioned before, including using the overdrive button on the side here, I really want to get through all the gears with some quick shifting, manually with my automatic, let’s give it a shot. Very responsive, however definitely a delay between all my shifts. We’re back here after our stock run, we have our stock shifter out of the car and we’re about to install the TCI ratchet shifter. We’ll take it back out, run it through the same paces, see what kind of changes we notice. So we’re back with our TCI ratchet shifter installed on our automatic GT, now we’re going to take it out on the street, let it run normally, just put it in drive as if our stock shifter were still in here and see how it performs, basically to make sure nothing changed. Then we’ll have some fun, going to throw it back into 1st gear and use the ratchet shifter to manually shift our automatic for precise and ideally crisp shifting with our automatic. Now up shift. Little tire chirp. Not bad. Now what I’ve done is go ahead and turned my overdrive off, so I’m working with my bottom 4 gears at all times, keeping the car in the “go gears” as I like to call it. Let’s give it some oomph going up this hill. Very nice. Well we just got back as you saw from driving the car with the TCI ratchet shifter in it, and I’ll be honest with you, it did add a lot of excitement to driving the automatic. I’m a fan of driving manuals, I want that control, and I feel I got that control in the automatic with the TCI ratchet shifter. It’s also really nice to look down and see the illuminated numbers here, I always knew what gear I was in. The leather boot and the brushed material really went well with the interior. So final verdict: good product that works well, and fits in the interior real nice.

Speed Shift. The stock automatic shifter is good for everyday driving, but it has some drawbacks when it comes to serious street/strip performance. TCI's StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter for the GT and V6 provides a positive stop shifting action that allows you to manually “speed shift” your Mustang's transmission without fear of hanging between gears or missing a gear all together.

Race Inspired Appearance. This Ratchet Shifter not only improves your overall driving experience, but it also has an equally impressive race-inspired billet appearance that makes it at home on the track or the street and comes complete with a lighted gear indicator for perfect gear selection.

Direct Fit Installation. The StreetFighter Mustang Ratchet Shifter was designed to fit perfectly into the 2005-2009 GT and V6's center console with no modifications required to the interior or the factory 5R55S transmission. And to further simplify the installation this ratchet shifter reuses the stock shift cable.

Application. This TCI Street Fighter Ratchet Shifter is designed to fit the 2005 to 2009 V6 and GT Mustang's with a 5R55S Automatic Transmission and is NHRA legal for drag race competition.

    Ask a Question

This is more of a general question but, is it safe to "downshift" while in motion? As in going 35 mph and going from d to 3 or going 15mph and going from 2 to 1?

    DanielF

    • The TCI StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter will still allow the OEM transmission controls to function, preventing shifts that may cause damage to the engine or transmission, such as shifting from 3rd to 2nd where the downshift would cause RPMs to spike to unsafe levels, such as 7500rpm, then the computer would block the shift until the RPM drop would be within acceptable safe limits.

I just bought this shifter, it is of my understanding that it is advised to change a part, like a clip or something, every time I'm changing the shifter, so I need to buy that part. Can anyone tell me what it is? And if you have this info, what's the part number for it? Thanks! I think it's called: shifter linkage clip, but I'm not sure... My car is a 2006 V6

    Franklin

    • The Shifter Linkage clips is not necessary for installation, however if you would like to get this for piece of mind, these can be purchased directly from your Ford dealer.

What color lights up the gears when the headlights are turned on?

    dchatha

    • The TCI StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter will illuminate the gear selection white, with the exception of the currently selected gear, which will illuminate orange.

Why does my Mustang not shift when I ratchet it from 1st to 2nd

    Anonymous

    • The TCI StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter will move the transmission shift selector to 2nd, however the PCM sees this as having first and second gear enabled. To get this to manually command a gear, a custom tune would be required to change how the car interprets this action.

Is it easy to install a custom shift knob on the top (like in some Pictures seen)?

    MaikD

    • Just break loose the locking nut underneath the TCI StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter's handle and you can easily remove the shifter handle and replace with an aftermarket shift knob.

      Well

Well I ordered this due to a family member recommending this. When I got it the silinoid was broken and all the pins that were suppost to line up were all wrong. The instructions were also wrong. When you install it make sure both shifters are in nutrual. After hours of messing around we finally got it to work. didn't work when the stock shifter was in nutrual but ratchet shifter was in drive. It worked when we tried both in nutrual. But over all when everything was fixed it works fine.

I love the look of this piece. I put a Hurst aftermarket handle on it, and it looks just as a 60' musclecar. Performance wise it pretty close to stock.

      crisp! EZ install

i love how crisp the shifts are now, there is a noticeable difference in the shifts. the "shift lag" has dramatically improved, i do wish the O/D was on the shifter but thats more to do with what i have always been used to, it is kinda cool having the O/D being a push button above the P on the gear line up. as for the install it was fairly EZ took me about 45-60 min that was also due to the fact that my car is lower so getting it up is alittle more difficult sometimes but i would say if you had a normal clearance and knowledge of how to take your center console out plus how to disengage the shift line underneath it would take about 30-45 min.

      Best Replacement Shifter for Automatics

The 05-09 faux chrome (metal) shifter is absolutely awful and was already showing signs of wear and cracking. I went online and saw this and immediately had to have it. It is AMAZING. It has a great feel to it and when racing, it allows you to bang shift without jumping more than one gear at a time, or worse, going into neutral. I have nitrous in my car and missing a gear would be bad. My only minor suggestion for those that live in a hot and sunny state like I do (FL), cover it up because it gets scorching hot. This is real aluminum (metal) unlike factory. I learned my lesson the first time I drove it after installing it.

      Must Have. New driving experience

The TCI Ratchet Shifter is by far one of the best upgrades that I've done to my car. My car is a daily driver and this spices things up. It allows me control my shifts when launching at red lights which is a lot of fun! This is fairly a straightforward install with the hardest part being messing around with the transmission cable where it connects to the claw-arm. I had to contact TCI during my install and they were extremely helpful with product information so if you need to talk to one of their technicians don't hesitate to call. Overall, this is an awesome product and a definite must have.

      Fun.

Fun little piece. Not super hard to install, I didn't end up breaking the bracket that everyone talks about but I had ordered one anyway, and that put my brain at ease. I, do, however, think it's a little pricey but it is really fun and much safer for anyone that has an automatic.

      LOTS OF FUN!

This shifter makes driving my '06 GT automatic a lot more fun. With 3:73 gears, performance tune, aluminum driveshaft, cold air intake and other mods, it's the perfect addition. I have experienced no lag between gears as described in other reviews. A little pricey but it's a perfect fit and the LED gear selector looks great. I added a Hurst T-handle which gives it a real "old school" look. Took a little over an hour to install using a jack to access the cable retaining clip.

      Why did I wait?

When I recieved my TCI shifter I was a little skeptical, but all that went away once it was installed. It's alot stouter than the factory shifter so it can take some abuse from at the track if thats your thing. Once installed and on the road it felt like the shifts were more firm and precise. Overall I'm wondering why I waited so long to get one. If your looking to have fun shifting your automatic and want to have the assurance that you wont throw your car into reverce while driving down the road, dont wait like I did. The install was'nt bad and the thing that took the longest to do was remove the shift cable from the factory shifter due to clearance issues. It only took me an hour and a half to install.
