Review & Install Video

Dave from AmericanMuscle, with me today is the TCI ratchet shifter for the 05-09 automatic GT and V6 Mustang. The idea behind the ratchet shifter is this: put some excitement and some precise control over your gear changes, back into driving your automatic Mustang. The TCI ratchet shift goes directly in place of the factory unit, no drilling or any kind of special modifications required. This part will allow you to manually shift your automatic with precise control and safety in mind. Safety, because you’re not going to miss any shifts and overshift or downshift too soon, with this neat ratcheting design, it allows you to precisely go from park into 1st and everything between. Here we are in our automatic GT, it’s the 05-09 variety so it’s a 5 speed automatic, at this point we’ve got the car in drive, I’m just going to drive round for a couple of minutes, get an idea of how it shifts on its own. Then we’ll throw it back with the stock shifter into 1st and go through all 5 gears, giving an idea of how it shifts when I shift it. The reason being we’re about to take this shifter out and as we mentioned go with the TCI ratchet shifter and come back out and try it again. Okay so we’ve just simulated normal driving, now I’m going to go ahead and throw this shifter down, put it into 1st, and go through the gears like I mentioned before, including using the overdrive button on the side here, I really want to get through all the gears with some quick shifting, manually with my automatic, let’s give it a shot. Very responsive, however definitely a delay between all my shifts. We’re back here after our stock run, we have our stock shifter out of the car and we’re about to install the TCI ratchet shifter. We’ll take it back out, run it through the same paces, see what kind of changes we notice. So we’re back with our TCI ratchet shifter installed on our automatic GT, now we’re going to take it out on the street, let it run normally, just put it in drive as if our stock shifter were still in here and see how it performs, basically to make sure nothing changed. Then we’ll have some fun, going to throw it back into 1st gear and use the ratchet shifter to manually shift our automatic for precise and ideally crisp shifting with our automatic. Now up shift. Little tire chirp. Not bad. Now what I’ve done is go ahead and turned my overdrive off, so I’m working with my bottom 4 gears at all times, keeping the car in the “go gears” as I like to call it. Let’s give it some oomph going up this hill. Very nice. Well we just got back as you saw from driving the car with the TCI ratchet shifter in it, and I’ll be honest with you, it did add a lot of excitement to driving the automatic. I’m a fan of driving manuals, I want that control, and I feel I got that control in the automatic with the TCI ratchet shifter. It’s also really nice to look down and see the illuminated numbers here, I always knew what gear I was in. The leather boot and the brushed material really went well with the interior. So final verdict: good product that works well, and fits in the interior real nice.

Speed Shift. The stock automatic shifter is good for everyday driving, but it has some drawbacks when it comes to serious street/strip performance. TCI's StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter for the GT and V6 provides a positive stop shifting action that allows you to manually “speed shift” your Mustang's transmission without fear of hanging between gears or missing a gear all together.

Race Inspired Appearance. This Ratchet Shifter not only improves your overall driving experience, but it also has an equally impressive race-inspired billet appearance that makes it at home on the track or the street and comes complete with a lighted gear indicator for perfect gear selection.

Direct Fit Installation. The StreetFighter Mustang Ratchet Shifter was designed to fit perfectly into the 2005-2009 GT and V6's center console with no modifications required to the interior or the factory 5R55S transmission. And to further simplify the installation this ratchet shifter reuses the stock shift cable.

Application. This TCI Street Fighter Ratchet Shifter is designed to fit the 2005 to 2009 V6 and GT Mustang's with a 5R55S Automatic Transmission and is NHRA legal for drag race competition.

This is more of a general question but, is it safe to "downshift" while in motion? As in going 35 mph and going from d to 3 or going 15mph and going from 2 to 1?

DanielF

  • The TCI StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter will still allow the OEM transmission controls to function, preventing shifts that may cause damage to the engine or transmission, such as shifting from 3rd to 2nd where the downshift would cause RPMs to spike to unsafe levels, such as 7500rpm, then the computer would block the shift until the RPM drop would be within acceptable safe limits.

I just bought this shifter, it is of my understanding that it is advised to change a part, like a clip or something, every time I'm changing the shifter, so I need to buy that part. Can anyone tell me what it is? And if you have this info, what's the part number for it? Thanks! I think it's called: shifter linkage clip, but I'm not sure... My car is a 2006 V6

Franklin

  • The Shifter Linkage clips is not necessary for installation, however if you would like to get this for piece of mind, these can be purchased directly from your Ford dealer.

Is it easy to install a custom shift knob on the top (like in some Pictures seen)?

MaikD

  • Just break loose the locking nut underneath the TCI StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter's handle and you can easily remove the shifter handle and replace with an aftermarket shift knob.

Will I need to install a manual valve body? I've heard different opinions.

Why does my Mustang not shift when I ratchet it from 1st to 2nd

Anonymous

  • The TCI StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter will move the transmission shift selector to 2nd, however the PCM sees this as having first and second gear enabled. To get this to manually command a gear, a custom tune would be required to change how the car interprets this action.

    Long time coming

Ive waited until this product got a little cheaper before purchasing, worth every penny now. half hour install, makes my Mustang way more fun to drive. Shifting back in park seems alittle rough. But over all very satisfied

    TCI Shifter

Good price and I love the way it looks and feels. Just be really careful concerning the position of the shift cable during installation. Do not let it move while disconnecting it from the stock shifter and hooking it up to the new TCI shifter. If you do, your new shifter will not reflect which gear you are truly in.

    TCI Streetfighter Shifter

Great looking shifter. Took me less than 1 hr. to install. hardest part is removing retaining clip at front of shifter. clip has 2 tips that snap into frame of shifter. hard to get at and difficult to see under car. actually bought this for the way it looked and ended up using it for what it is designed to do. solid lookup on shift change and no problems so far. great item.

    LOTS OF FUN

This past Christmas, my beautiful wife purchased this shifter for me. I just got it installed two weeks ago(Bad weather in Ohio)and is it ever bad a__! Have a great time with it.As usual, great product from AM.This shifter is 100% beter than stock as it lets you bang thru the gears without the fear of missing a gear. The Stang is a lot more fun to drive.

A MUST HAVE for every automatic Mustang !

First off, A HUGE !! hats off to costumer service at AMERICANMUSCLE. I received my package partially opened and the box was beat up (Not A.M's fault but rather U.P.S's), at this point I called AMERICANMUSCLE and let them know what happened. Before I even finished explaining why I felt hesitant installing the shifter ... and I quote "Sir I am very sorry you received an opened package and I will feel much better If I can send you a NEW package right away"... WOW !! A+ and I received the new shifter the next day !!! Now on to the shifter review... The instal wasn't to bad and the shifter is amazing !! (TIP) when installing the shifter wrap it with something so it wont get nicked when tightening bolts or placing the center console back in. The last thing you want is a ding or scrape on your new shifter.

Great Shifter, Easy Install, Minor Adjustment needed

This is a cool upgrade. Makes my automatic a lot more fun, just step on it, and shift. Works great. One adjustment I had to make. The instructions don't tell you this, but when you go through the install and you have the new shifter in and are attaching the cable connector under the car. make sure the connector and the shifter "pin" align. The cable can be easily adjusted at that point. If it is off the shifter will not ratchet correctly. Only try this if you have a problem shifting. you may get lucky on the first try.. Mine was off just enough to have even been related to the placement of the shifter inside the car. But all in all, great product, highly recommended.

    awesome product if it worked

The first one i ordered would not let me down shift. So i sent it back and got a new one. the second one i got the leds did not work properly and it thought that 1st gear was drive and when i shifted to second it was like it down shifter from drive to first and just over reved the engine. Tci just said they were broken and did offer much help. American muscle's service on the other hand was great. they took back both shifters and paid for shipping. I will be returning costumer to a,ericanmuscle but not tci. The only thing that worked in the shifters was drive, park, and reverse. So if looks is all you want and dont plan on ratchet shifting than you can buy it, but some of the leds will probably not work and beware that people on the mustang forums had the shifters get stuck in park. Not a good product.

    Looks unneccesary...

Interesting, but not needed, especially at current cost. Looks kind of ugly too. Most likely will never consider this as an add on for such a fine auto.

    Best of both worlds!

I bought my car with an automatic transmission because I drive a truck for a living, and I do enough shifting all day long to want to do it in my car too...Until I bought this TCI Ratchet shifter, that is. My car is now more fun to drive and I can "bang" through the gears if I want, or just leave it in drive...it's the best of both worlds! Fit and finish is excellent, the guys at TCI really did a great job designing this shifter, and I love the leather boot.

    Great Addition

This shifter totally changes the feel of the car. Ofcourse you aren't getting any performance gains but I frequently take my 05 GT to the dragstrip and this makes an incredible difference. Obviously drive is an option but you feel way more confident shifting with this shifter. No missing a gear or overshifting to neutral. First wouldn't go into park though, took forever to get my replacement but the new one is great. Took an hour and a half to install the first time using ramps and I'm pretty mechanically inclined I've built my own engines but its crammed with just ramps and the directions are vague. Second time around I had the shifter installed in a half hour. Easier if you have to people so one person can just stay under the car.

    TCI Ratchet Shifter

I had this installed in about 30 minutes. Works fine! It definitely looks better than stock. You may notice that I did not show it to have any performance gains. This is not a hit on the product, just a fact. You can't outshift an auto, so performance is the same. But it is an outstanding product. I would definitely recommend this.

    Best Upgrade You Can Do!!!

This is an awesome product! with the addition of an Autometer shift light, shifting is a blast!!! It works as it should, without any of the problems some listed. We put a custom red ball shift knob with my wife's name on it,(same color as the car too!) and it really confuses the heck out of people at shows and cruises! You will not regret this purchase!!! this and the 4:10's really make this fun to drive again! Just do it!!! All the other upgrades are cool, but this makes you part of the car! As it should be!

Ordered it one day, got it the next day! You need a decent jack to get the car high enough to get to the cable. You "urban males", AKA Holister shoppers, will fit under just fine. Very easy to install! Directions are pretty good, but there are a few utube videos that are better. I purchased this for the appearance and not for the rachet shift capability, but the rachet shifting is very nice!

    Awesome product!

Love the way this shifter looks and works. Makes the car much more fun to drive and especially useful on those fun mountain curves and up and downhill slopes. As described by others the retaining clips are difficult to remove with the car only on jack stands. Just took more time and patience then I expected without having the car on a lift.

Transmission Blew so did a complete rebuild and shifter

At 100k, Lost my Transmission and had to get it rebuild, since i Build everything stronger anytime something goes bad I moved to the TCI to get the most out of my Transmission. I love this thing, the factory model was always a pain missed shifts and all. The TCI give me full control for the power bands and with the slap shift no more missed gears. A must buy for any Auto trans people.
