Review & Install Video

Dave from AmericanMuscle, with me today is the TCI ratchet shifter for the 05-09 automatic GT and V6 Mustang. The idea behind the ratchet shifter is this: put some excitement and some precise control over your gear changes, back into driving your automatic Mustang. The TCI ratchet shift goes directly in place of the factory unit, no drilling or any kind of special modifications required. This part will allow you to manually shift your automatic with precise control and safety in mind. Safety, because you’re not going to miss any shifts and overshift or downshift too soon, with this neat ratcheting design, it allows you to precisely go from park into 1st and everything between. Here we are in our automatic GT, it’s the 05-09 variety so it’s a 5 speed automatic, at this point we’ve got the car in drive, I’m just going to drive round for a couple of minutes, get an idea of how it shifts on its own. Then we’ll throw it back with the stock shifter into 1st and go through all 5 gears, giving an idea of how it shifts when I shift it. The reason being we’re about to take this shifter out and as we mentioned go with the TCI ratchet shifter and come back out and try it again. Okay so we’ve just simulated normal driving, now I’m going to go ahead and throw this shifter down, put it into 1st, and go through the gears like I mentioned before, including using the overdrive button on the side here, I really want to get through all the gears with some quick shifting, manually with my automatic, let’s give it a shot. Very responsive, however definitely a delay between all my shifts. We’re back here after our stock run, we have our stock shifter out of the car and we’re about to install the TCI ratchet shifter. We’ll take it back out, run it through the same paces, see what kind of changes we notice. So we’re back with our TCI ratchet shifter installed on our automatic GT, now we’re going to take it out on the street, let it run normally, just put it in drive as if our stock shifter were still in here and see how it performs, basically to make sure nothing changed. Then we’ll have some fun, going to throw it back into 1st gear and use the ratchet shifter to manually shift our automatic for precise and ideally crisp shifting with our automatic. Now up shift. Little tire chirp. Not bad. Now what I’ve done is go ahead and turned my overdrive off, so I’m working with my bottom 4 gears at all times, keeping the car in the “go gears” as I like to call it. Let’s give it some oomph going up this hill. Very nice. Well we just got back as you saw from driving the car with the TCI ratchet shifter in it, and I’ll be honest with you, it did add a lot of excitement to driving the automatic. I’m a fan of driving manuals, I want that control, and I feel I got that control in the automatic with the TCI ratchet shifter. It’s also really nice to look down and see the illuminated numbers here, I always knew what gear I was in. The leather boot and the brushed material really went well with the interior. So final verdict: good product that works well, and fits in the interior real nice.

Speed Shift. The stock automatic shifter is good for everyday driving, but it has some drawbacks when it comes to serious street/strip performance. TCI's StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter for the GT and V6 provides a positive stop shifting action that allows you to manually “speed shift” your Mustang's transmission without fear of hanging between gears or missing a gear all together.

Race Inspired Appearance. This Ratchet Shifter not only improves your overall driving experience, but it also has an equally impressive race-inspired billet appearance that makes it at home on the track or the street and comes complete with a lighted gear indicator for perfect gear selection.

Direct Fit Installation. The StreetFighter Mustang Ratchet Shifter was designed to fit perfectly into the 2005-2009 GT and V6's center console with no modifications required to the interior or the factory 5R55S transmission. And to further simplify the installation this ratchet shifter reuses the stock shift cable.

Application. This TCI Street Fighter Ratchet Shifter is designed to fit the 2005 to 2009 V6 and GT Mustang's with a 5R55S Automatic Transmission and is NHRA legal for drag race competition.

Is it easy to install a custom shift knob on the top (like in some Pictures seen)?

Will I need to install a manual valve body? I've heard different opinions.

  • Hello! You do not need to install a manual valve body for the TCI StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter

Why does my Mustang not shift when I ratchet it from 1st to 2nd

  • The TCI StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter will move the transmission shift selector to 2nd, however the PCM sees this as having first and second gear enabled. To get this to manually command a gear, a custom tune would be required to change how the car interprets this action.

If I "bang" through the gears and shift it into drive (for fourth gear) do I have to press the overdrive button when I'm ready for 5th gear? Or will the normal Drive auto-shift into 5th? I don't want to be fumbling around looking for a button when I'm trying to speed shift

  • It should normally shift. All overdrive does is allow your car to roll/move when your foot is off the gas.

Knowing that there is a small button on the side of the stock shifter to put it into overdrive, how do I engage the overdrive on this shifter. I can't seem to find where it would be on the knob?

  • There is an overdrive button on the side of the TCI StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter.

    Awesome product!

Love the way this shifter looks and works. Makes the car much more fun to drive and especially useful on those fun mountain curves and up and downhill slopes. As described by others the retaining clips are difficult to remove with the car only on jack stands. Just took more time and patience then I expected without having the car on a lift.

Transmission Blew so did a complete rebuild and shifter

At 100k, Lost my Transmission and had to get it rebuild, since i Build everything stronger anytime something goes bad I moved to the TCI to get the most out of my Transmission. I love this thing, the factory model was always a pain missed shifts and all. The TCI give me full control for the power bands and with the slap shift no more missed gears. A must buy for any Auto trans people.

Easy and fun upgrade for your Pony, but make sure to buy extra linkage clip.

This is a great product that is a lot of fun to use and a head turner at cruise ins. It was easy to install (45 minutes in my case). The hardest part is getting the console out. You can use a lift to get under the car or use 4 jack stands. PLEASE NOTE*** There is a plastic clip that holds the shift cable to the shifter under the car which can easily break. It is recommended that you purchase a new one to avoid getting stranded in your driveway. You can buy it online for about $14 or get it from the Ford dealer. Mine did not break (knock on wood) but its a finicky little piece that I would not trust to re-use.

Park lockout solenoid is the issue. Took two to get one that worked. When solenoid goes bad, cannot get car out of park. UNLESS you disconnect and reconnect batter power. Great to know in an emergency. PERFORMANCE!!!!! LOVE IT!!!!!

    TCI Ratchet Shifter

I love the look of this shifter. It is so much nicer than stock. The installation took about 2 hours. Be careful with the clip on the cable. The shifter works great, it takes a little getting use to. There is a delay in the shift so watch where you shift, don't go to redline before shifting. Otherwise I love this product.

I installed the TCI StreetFighter Ratchet Shifter in my 2006 mustang GT in about 2 hrs. I changed the handle so the OD would be mounted on the handle and easier to use. I really like the feel and fit of this product.

    Makes the auto a manual!!

Takes the so call wimp Automatic Transmission to another level. It gives you the ability the shift the transmission like it was meant to be right from Ford. That's right, now you can really enjoy the manual shifting without the risk of skipping or missing the proper gear when on the track or just having fun! Plus it's pretty much amazing looking! I recommend it 100% - it's a must!!!!

    Money well spent.

This shifter is definitely one of the best products I've bought for my car so far. From performance to looks it is definitely worth every penny. Even the install wasn't too bad only took me about an hour and 30 minutes and thats only because I didnt have all the right tools. With the right tools and a lift (which is what i needed most) it probably only would have taken me 40 minutes Overall great product and a must have for any automatic out there.

    Great Addition

This shifter totally changes the feel of the car. Ofcourse you aren't getting any performance gains but I frequently take my 05 GT to the dragstrip and this makes an incredible difference. Obviously drive is an option but you feel way more confident shifting with this shifter. No missing a gear or overshifting to neutral. First wouldn't go into park though, took forever to get my replacement but the new one is great. Took an hour and a half to install the first time using ramps and I'm pretty mechanically inclined I've built my own engines but its crammed with just ramps and the directions are vague. Second time around I had the shifter installed in a half hour. Easier if you have to people so one person can just stay under the car.

    TCI Ratchet Shifter

I had this installed in about 30 minutes. Works fine! It definitely looks better than stock. You may notice that I did not show it to have any performance gains. This is not a hit on the product, just a fact. You can't outshift an auto, so performance is the same. But it is an outstanding product. I would definitely recommend this.

    Sure beats the stock P.O.S.

Looks great, and is much more durable than the stock auto shifter, in so many ways. No problems after six months or so. I love it. If I have a gripe, it's the overdrive on/off button, or lack thereof. It is a little membrane type button. I wish it had something solid, that you could feel "click" on and off. Installation can be a bit tricky. I am no mechanic, but after looking up some other's experiences on the internet, and reading the instructions closely, I got it done. Rent or borrow a lift if you can. This project is a real PITA, in your driveway, using only jackstands.

Far more superior than the OEM junk

Took about an hour to install. As everything on this planet I expected a bit of an issue installing it . It went in with zero issues. Perfect fit and operates beautifully. I own two stangs this 2005 V6 and a 94 GT which we are almost finished restoring. I will be calling for a few more parts for it.

    Best Upgrade You Can Do!!!

This is an awesome product! with the addition of an Autometer shift light, shifting is a blast!!! It works as it should, without any of the problems some listed. We put a custom red ball shift knob with my wife's name on it,(same color as the car too!) and it really confuses the heck out of people at shows and cruises! You will not regret this purchase!!! this and the 4:10's really make this fun to drive again! Just do it!!! All the other upgrades are cool, but this makes you part of the car! As it should be!

I got my shifter from TCI about 3 and 1/2 years ago before AM was selling them...I paid about $100.00 more. The shifter is a great one! You still have a button to turn on and off overdrive, it looks better than stock and works great. Easy to instal in about an hour useing factory shift cable! You will love this shifter in your auto Mustang and American Muscle has the BEST PRICE with free shipping!

Great looking shifter. Took me less than 1 hr. to install. hardest part is removing retaining clip at front of shifter. clip has 2 tips that snap into frame of shifter. hard to get at and difficult to see under car. actually bought this for the way it looked and ended up using it for what it is designed to do. solid lookup on shift change and no problems so far. great item.
