Andrew Cilio Ford made plenty of changes to the Mustang lineup in 2003. New colors called Dark Shadow Grey and Redfire were added to the options list to replace Mineral Grey and Laser Tint Red. The base model got the 1999 and 2001 Cobra hood. A new model called the Pony Edition was added to the lineup. It included the GT hood scoop, "Stampeding Pony" graphics, polished 16 inch wheels, and black inserts in the bumpers.
The 3.8-liter V6 carries over from 2002 generating 190-hp with the split-port induction to improve gas mileage. The 4.6-liter V8 in the GT carries over 260-horses from last year with large valves, equal-length manifold runners, and high-lift cams.
Ford also resurrected the venerable Mach 1 moniker for 2003. This limited-edition model had a number of unique enhancements. The Mach 1 got a new 4.6L DOHC V8 which produced 305 horsepower. This motor got air from a functional "Shaker" hood scoop. It also sported a flat black stripe that ran down the hood, black "Mach 1" side stripes, a black spoiler, and rolled exhaust tips. The seats were made from Comfort Weave like the originals. New Magnum 500 wheels were the only wheel offered on the Mach 1. A Mach could be had in Dark Shadow Grey, Torch Red, Black, Zinc Yellow, Oxford White, and Azure Blue, the latter of which was exclusive to the Mach 1.
The 2003 Cobra, or “Terminator”, makes a triumphant return, this time packing a brand new standard Eaton supercharger along with some other power upgrades as a support system. This new engine is an M112 roots style supercharged engine and puts down an impressive 390-RWHP. Upgraded engine components consist of Manley H beam connecting rods, specially designed Zolner pistons, heavy duty cast iron block, and aluminum flywheel. The 2003 Cobra also features a Tremec T-56 six-speed transmission, the first one offered in a Mustang, but is also available in a beefed up automatic. Some more improvements from 2001 consist of spring rates, Bilstein dampers on the front and rear, more durable brake pads. However, the 2003 Cobra’s rear axle carries over an independent (IRS) setup from 2001. All 2003 (and 2004) Cobras ride on 17 x 9 aluminum chrome wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Z rated tires and are available in coupe and convertible and the only year the Cobra is available in Sonic Blue.
