Review & Installation Video

Hey guys, Justin here with AmericanMuscle.com. And I'm going to be taking a closer look at the C&L Street and Racer Cold Air Intake system available for your 2011 to 2014 Coyote powered GT. C&L is definitely going to be one of the nicer intake options available for your '89 to '14 Mustang. Now they actually dedicate a majority of their time and efforts into designing flow bench testing and producing Mustang's specific intakes and have been doing so for over 20 years now, whether it's a cold air for your Coyota like we have here or a map housing for your Fox body or Cobra, chances are C&L has you covered. Now if you do want to see more stuff from C&L, including my own personal build where I have used this exact same intake on my own GT, then be sure to check out our YouTube Channel some time, American Muscle videos, and be sure to subscribe while you're there. So this video is going to be focusing on both the C&L Street and Racer Cold Air Intake systems. Now at first glance you can see both intakes look identical and that's because they are. The only exception is the C&L Street here does include this removable insert that does allow you to run this intake without the use of a custom tune. On the other hand, the Racer here does not include that insert and, therefore, does have to be used with a custom tune thanks to the larger 95 millimeter map housing that both intakes do include. The Street is a perfect option for those of you without a custom tune but might want to explore that option later on down the road. As you guys may or may not know by now, the purpose of an aftermarket cold air intake system, like the C&L here, is to eliminate the restrictive factory airbox increasing the airflow into your motor, either with or without a tune. Now even though that C&L Street intake does not require the use of a custom tune, we always recommend going with a custom Bama tune just to get the most power out of your setup as we'll demonstrate in a minute. Dissecting the intakes a little further, you'll notice they both do include the same rotomolded plastic intake tube along with a 95 millimeter map housings. We're also looking at reusable high airflow filter which is a nice touch that allows you to clean and re-oil them as you go, saving you the hassle of buying a new filter every few months. The intakes also include a plastic heat shield which is going to keep that hot engine air from entering your motor along with all the couplers and hardware needed for the installation. Now most people think of performance gains first when installing an aftermarket cold air intake system and rightly so, but there are also a few other benefits worth noting. The first of which is appearance. Now in my opinion an aftermarket air intake system, like the C&L here, just looks much better under the hood. It gives you that added bling factor when compared to the factory intake. The second is sound. Installing an aftermarket cold air intake will unleash a sound on your Coyote motor that you just have to hear for yourself. Now, in fact, don't take my word for it, definitely check out some of our customer views back on the product page if you're not there already. Just click the link below, and you can also check out over 20+ customer submitted images of this intake installed on customer rides. As for the installation itself, you'll be happy to know that installing a cold air intake on your GT is without a doubt one of the easier jobs to tackle. It can be done with basic hand tools in about an hour's time in your driveway. Now, of course, if you guys should get jammed up, don't forget to reference your detailed installation instructions on the product page or feel free to reach out to a Mustang expert anytime using the 1-800 number. With the intake installed, we're going to remove that insert and upload a custom Bama tune to see what the C&L intake is truly capable of. Now the custom Bama tune is going to do a few things for us and our four valve motor. It's going to optimize our spark timing, adjust our variable cam timing, increase our throttle response, and get those fuel ratios right where they need to be. With our baseline RD run already out of the way, now it's time to turn the rollers one more time and see what the C&L Bama combination did for our 2012 GT. Our baseline run using our 2012 GT gave us 361 horsepower and 344 pound feet of torque at the rear wheels. With the C&L Bama combination in place, the car is now making 387 horsepower and 375 pound feet of torque, giving us a peak increase of 26 horsepower over those baseline numbers and gains of as much as 30 horsepower and 35 pound feet of torque throughout the curve. So if you're looking for a solid bolt-on that's easy to install and should give your Coyote motor a nice bump in power and sound, then be sure to check out both the C&L Street and Racer intake for your ride right here at AmericanMuscsle.com.

Maximum Airflow. A C&L Performance "Racer" Cold Air Intake kit will completely replace your GT Mustang's restrictive stock air box and paper filter element with a high flow filter assembly to maximize airflow for a noticeable increase in horsepower, torque and performance. By replacing your restrictive factory intake you can except to see gains of up to 30 horsepower and 35 ft-lb of torque.

Pre-calibrate 95mm MAF Housing. This C&L Performance cold air intake kit includes a brand new cast aluminum 95mm MAF housing that is already calibrated for use with the stock fuel injectors, MAF sensor not included.

47% More Airflow. The factory intake used on the 2011-2012 GT is actually more restrictive than the one used on the 2010 GT. But by replacing it with a high-flow C&L assembly, your GT will unleash the sleeping monster under the hood. In fact, the C&L has been tested to improve airflow by up to an amazing 47% with a tune.

Made in the USA. Proudly made in the USA from the highest quality materials available, this C&L Performance Cold Air Intake has been extensively flow bench tested and engineered to out perform the competition.

Required Upgrade. Installation of this C&L Racer Cold Air Intake will require a custom Bama tune with the use of a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for operation.

Rechargeable High Flow Filter. Included with your C&L Cold Air Kit is a high-flow, reusable, rechargeable filter. That means no more spending money on OEM paper filters that waste money and horsepower. Just clean your C&L filter, re-oil it, and put it back on to save money and enjoy better performance in one shot.

Application. This C&L Performance "Racer" Cold Air Intake System is specifically designed for use on 2011 to 2014 GT Mustangs equipped with the DOHC 4-valve 5.0L coyote V8 engine. Custom tuning is required for operation.

What is the difference between the Racer and Street cold air intakes? why does the street offer more power gains and also not require a tune but the racer does.

Apologies - novice here. I have a 2012 Boss 302 with a track key. If using the track key, will I need a separate tune or will I simply be able to use the new intake while using the track key?

  • The C&L Racer Cold Air Intake w/ 95mm MAF (11-14 GT) will need a tune for the install. You would need a separate tune for this. The Track key will not act like a tune for the cold air intake.

Does the race tune bama provides with the tuner work or do you need a different custom tune?

  • Any tune Bama provides will be compatible with any of the products Bama offers tunes for, so yes, you can have a race tune paired with this C&L Racer Cold Air Intake w/ 95mm MAF (11-14 GT)

Does this CAI utilize the factory cold air intake ducting?

14Stang921

  • Yes. You're only removing the air box and factory tubing from the car. The factory cold air intake ducting will act as a bridge to the new intake shroud.

    DarkHorseS197

Does the C&L Racer and Street CAI use the same housing? On a 2013 GT with the hood vents, will the Racer housing block water infiltration in the same manner as the Street housing?

  • Neither the street or the racer intakes should be allowing water to to go into your intake. You may notice some drops here and there in your engine by, but due to the advanced design of the oiled cone filter that is included none of that water should be able to make it into the intake or cause any damage.

    Easy install straight forward

I installed the CandL and my car kept cutting off so i was wondering why it took me a while with the help of the American Muscle Team to tell me the silver cylinder has to be turned around and the MAS (Mass Air Sensor) opening had to be facing the air filter after that it worked like a charm instant gain goes great with a tune a must have.

    Great gain in HP

Prior to ordering this CAI for my 2012 GT... I had flowmaster outlaw axleback, JBA off road H pipe, and a 91 Race tune from Bama. That dyno'd at 391 Horsepower to the wheels. After installing the C&L CAI along with the free new tune from Bama... My 5.0 now is pushing 406 rwhp. That is a huge difference. I can definitely tell the difference in power after installing this C&L CAI.

    I'm a Believer

I unpacked the box and put the components along with the required tools on a work bench beside the '12 Mustang GT in my shop. I read the installation instructions to my 16 year old daughter, and with a few additional personal "techniques", she had the job completed in 45 minutes. It took about 20 minutes to install the custom Bama tune. The difference was amazing! The next day at work, I gave a test drive to a co-worker who bought his '12 GT the same time as I. He was blown away at the difference the CAI and custom tune made in the Pony. He will be ordering one soon.

c&l cold air intake (tune required)

The intake came mostly pre assembled and well wrapped up. It looked well designed and fit perfect. The instructions were so easy to follow my 6 year old son helped me!! It even came with the correct bit needed to remove the sensor. Price was inexpensive and well worth the performance gain.

    C@L and Bama Tunining

What great products. The installation on the C@L cold air intake was easy enough that I let my 14 year old granddaughter do it for me while I watched. Same with the Bama tuning. I currently have it tuned to 87 octane until summer. Saving money on gas. Then I'll retune for 91.

The power gains with this product are amazing, especially 3500 rpms with the 93 octane race tune. It was extremely easy to install, it took around 25 minutes and when you punch it it sounds great.

    WOW!! Huge gains!!

I bought this intake & tune combo awhile back when it was on sale. I installed as soon as it came in and took very little time with the right tools. As far as gains are concerned I had it dynoed with only the addition of the SLP loudmouth axleback kit. I looked up what stock dyno was and read an average of 361 rwhp. After the dyno I hit 398 rwhp on the first pull!!! I was shocked! Best bang for the buck out there. Couldnt be happier.(93 octane race tune/SCT)

    awesome mod

i reviewed all the intakes out for the new 5.0 and i kept coming back to the c&l intake so i decided this was the one. i've had c&l products in the past and i knew this one wouldn't disappoint and it didn't. this intake is awesome, perfect fit, looks great and performs just as good. my brother and i took our time installing this but it wasn't difficult, instructions were pretty good and all the pieces are quality and fit very well. you can hear this intake sucking the air every time you hit the throttle. with the bama tunes this intake rocks. you will not be disappointed if you get this intake, trust me, perfect for future mods and it looks sexy under the hood too. throttle response is increased and i have nothing bad to say about this product. dyno numbers to come soon when i get it to the shop but i can definitely feel the difference with this installed.
