Review & Install Video

Hey I’m Justin with, and I’m taking a closer look at the Raxiom digital shift knob, fitting all 79 and newer manual Mustangs. Raxiom is the number 1 name in producing cool and unique aftermarket lighting for your Mustang, all backed by an industry leading full 2 year warranty. If you happen to be watching this video someplace other than our site, and you want to learn more about this shift knob and other Raxiom products, just click on the link below. This shift knob from Raxiom will no doubt be the centerpiece in any interior, thanks in part to the digital LCD screen that displays whatever gear your car is in, and is capable of producing up to 256 different colors. Because of the many color options, I’d say this knob is a great option for anybody with a newer Mustang equipped with the ambient lighting package, and especially the My Color feature. This way you can match the color of the Raxiom to your interior color, making the knob easily mistakeable as a factory part. Even if you were to take away the cool lightup feature with this knob, I’d still say it would make a great addition to any Mustang’s interior, thanks to the simple black and silver design. As for the knob itself it’s definitely on the lighter side so some of you may prefer that, while others may prefer a heavier knob like a Billet style knob. So, just something to consider there. I just want to remind you guys if you haven’t already subscribed to our YouTube channel, now is your chance, simply click on the link below or on the AM logo up in the corner, this way you can stay tuned with all the latest Raxiom products, some of our other product videos, and everything pertaining to your late model Mustang. Included in the package you’ll obviously find the knob itself, a small wiring harness, and an instructional CD that lays out how to get the knob installed, along with programming the knob and selecting your desired color. The actual process of getting the knob installed into your ride is pretty easy. However, getting the knob programmed to the gear you’re selecting in addition to getting your color selected will take a little time so that’s why we’re going to call this one 30 minutes from start to finish. If you do run into any problems with the wiring or with selecting your preferred color, give us a call, 855-422-7439, or shoot us an email at This knob from Raxiom not only looks good on its own but with the addition of the cool LCD display, it’s sure to be the centerpiece in any Mustang’s interior. Be sure to check one out for your ride, right here at

Will this knob work with any short throw shifter?

  • Yes it will. There is no thread on the shift knob, it is tightened down with a nut in the base. It will sync up to the short throw as long as you follow the sync process completely.

  • From what i see on the page, its one of those universal ones, has a cup that u screw down on the shifter threads then pop the handle on the cup and tighten a few allen screws, should even fit a odd shaped short throw shifter threads and shanks

    Breaks Easy

I had this hooked up to my mustang and it worked perfectly, I loved it. About 20ish days of having it, and i drive responsibly, I was shifting gears and the knob broke straight in half, like the plastic just broke in half at the base. I was forced to drive home holding the shifter boot. It was unfixable and a waste of my money.

    Nice addition!

I just bought this, and i gotta say, it weighs less, it's futuristic, and looks simply awesome, a few tips here for those that are new to installing this. -You may need more wire for this, both ground and hot. -Locate your fuse panel, mine was on the passenger side. 2008 Mustang GT -Get yourself a test light, there should be a few open spots, find one, put your test light on it, while your key is off, if it lights up, move onto the next, if it doesn't light up, double check by turning your key on, if it does, bingo, that's your spot. -Buy yourself a Cooper Bussmann/ATM fuse tap with 10 amp fuses. They sell these at autozone / checkers. After the installation process with the wiring, simply follow the easy directions to program the color you like, do not mount it down with double sided tape until you choose your color. Hope this helps!

    not too good

Bought this from AM and yes at first it works great, shifts lighter, and is a great item looks wise. Now the bad is the digital lights inside the shifter slowly gave out and within 4 months half the lights stopped working. My experience is overall cheap product

Nice Shift Knob, but a pain in the A@@

This is a German product, and the instructional CD-ROM is not that of a Regionally recognized format, so I had to download the English version of instructions from the IndyCator website. The instillation was easy: Gain access to your fuse box (see owners manual). Find the fuse that powers your windshield wipers (you may need extra wire for this. Just take the red power wire and add it to a small bore speaker wire, and use electrical tape to secure it.) Secure the black (ground wire) to the chassis directly under your stereo mounting. Hide the wires. Connect the shift knob. To program, it's a bit tricky. You have to secure the control box to a vertically leveled fixture within the transmission well. Push and hold the SETUP BUTTON. Once you see "C" on the shift knob display. Depress the setup button twice (2x) in rapid succession. You will see the display blink gears (1), put it in first gear. (2), put it in second gear, and so on... *Car must be running in idle this whole time* If you have a 4 or 5 speed, ignore the 5 or 6 and leave it in the top gear until it blinks (r) for reverse. Once this is all done, while car is still idling, put it back in first gear, and drive one city block in first gear. Stop. Turn the car off, and the shift knob is programmed. Put the car in neutral, apply park brake. Restart car, and you are all ready to go.

    Looks nice, but be patient.

A friend of mine purchased this item and I installed it for him. The item itself looks fantastic. Feels great in the hand and does not look out of place in the car. The shift knob itself is not threaded, so it will work with any aftermarket short throw shifter. Minor work is needed to the shift boot if you want a complete flush look. Wiring, if you follow the instruction, will make the shift knob stay on even if the ignition is off (as it wires into the power outlet in your arm rest). However, a simple switch, hidden in the armrest can fix this. Or you can go all out and get extra wire and find a fuse spot that is not active when the ignition is off. Changing the color and syncing the shift knob proved to be difficult at first, but with some trial and error, it was accomplished. Installation should take 30-60 minutes. But I recommend taking the time and putting aside an afternoon if this is something you have never done before.

    NIce Addtition to the Car

First of all I want to say thanks to Jay in the review column for providing the details on the fuse tap. I really love this thing. The colors are very bright and detailed. There is also a fast response when you shift from gear to gear. I am very inpressed with how the system remembers the gears, when you program it to your settings. It is much smaller and lighter then the stock shift knob and has a nice clean black color to it. I wired mine to the fuse box, which was very simple and kept it clean. I ran the wires up under the dash and the center consule, those kept them out sight. The easiest is to tuck them under the carpet and the plastic. Since the fuse tap is only to the power only. Finding the ground was hard to do. I did find a piece of metal up in the middle behind and straight down from the stereo. Just left of where the passenger's left foot would be in that general direction. I drilled a small hole there and ran the ground wire to that and electrical taped that. That is hidden back behind the plastic and is easily accessible without removing anything. Another hard part of getting access to was the fuse box i had to take off some of the panel as well as the trim on the passenger side, by the door hinge, to get to it. Nothing was a problem after manipulating it to take the fuse box cover off. Be sure to get the small fuse tap. That will save you time, hence it took me a weekend to get it installed (had to work). Overall its an easy install. I had no instructions. Finding the instructions for the same model as I purchased was difficult, but other than that its very simple to install. The programming is easy if just follow right along. Thank you to American Muscle for the fast and free shipping!!!! Justin

    Digital shift Knob

Mmmmmmm lets say its to expensive ,,,,,Hookup isnt bad u just hook up to the power 12 v to your radio and use the Lighter ground wire ! But the main problem is the programing is soooooooo ridiculous and the instructuions and not real clear. So in order to program start your car make sure the lil white box is at a very level setting step 1. hit the set button till a c appears when that C appears rotate the box till you acheve the desired color then hit set you will hit the set button again and th cross bar appears ---- when it appears hot set button again then the 1 will start flashing put it into 1 gear postion till the 2 appaears then drop it into 2 gear and so if you dont have a 6 speed when your in the 5th gear and 6 appears just let it flash till the reverse R shows up then put in resverse .......after the gears are set a A will appear when the A appears you need to start accelerating till you get through all gears once it accepts it will show a flashing circle ! well overal its looks great and is much better feel then the factory but its just not worth a $220.00

    Great item for casual driver

Driving in traffic was giving me problems knowing which of six gears I was in and this seem to be the ideal answer. It took less than an hour to install but had to reprogram when first gear wasn't showing correctly the first time. Since then it has been a great item with the close shift pattern to avoid incorrect down shifts.

    Nice Additiion

I've been keeping my eye on this shifter since I took delivery of my Convertible Mustang, SALMA. When I realized she had ambiant lighting I knew this would be a great addition. The numbers are bright and vibriant and look good in the evenings when I cruise with my top down. I've gotten many compliments from passer-byers and from all my CLUBBIES in my car club. I love it and recommend to all Mustang owners, in particular to the owners of convertibles.

    Looks Cool

Completely useless, but it looks cool. It took an afternoon to install.Mostly because I had to make a few parts runs.(Lack of planing on my part) Even with my limited skills I got it in, and it WORKS. The fuse tap helped allot. Programming was a bit of a pain. I was losing patience when everything started working. Could just be because I was in a hurry by then. What I read on this site was of more help than the instructions.

Installation of Gear Indicator Shift Knob on 2013 Mustang

I’ve just returned the official Ford Gear Indicator Shift Knob that proved to have only one color and ordered the 256-color Gaslock Gear Indicator Shift Knob at American Muscle for my 2013 Mustang GT Premium (with Roush exhausts & BAMA tune also from American Muscle). Hereby an extensive instruction for connecting and mounting the Gear Indicator Shift Knob on a 2013 Mustang. Remove the Center Console panel by opening the center rear storage compartment and pulling the rear of the Center Console panel up (it clicks out). Disconnect the connector for the 3 buttons by pushing on the rear of the connector while pulling down. Place the Center Console panel (with the other wires still connected) on the passenger seat. Loosen the two bolts at the bottom of the Radio panel and remove this panel by pulling the lower part of this panel. Disconnect the connector and put the Radio panel aside. Remove the Dashboard glove box by loosing the 4 bolts underneath this glove box, put the glove box aside. Remove the side panel at the place of the right passenger foot and lift up the “curtain” that’s hiding the Passenger Compartment Fuse Panel. Remove the Fuse Panel. Buy a Mini fuse tab (f.i. Littelfuse MINI Add-A-CircuitFHM200BP 0FHM0200ZP) at Autozone. This Mini tab can be placed instead of a mini fuse and has two circuits: the original fuse can be placed in the 1st circuit and you have an extra circuit (mini fuses of 3,5, 7,5 and 10 A are included) with a connection wire. Lead the plus (red) wire from the Gear Indicator Shift Knob from the Center Console through the Radio compartment via the rear of the Glove box to the Fuse panel and stick the blank wire end in the Mini tab connector. Squeeze the connector with pliers. I have put the Mini tab in place of fuse 41, this power is switched by the ignition key. If you want to place the Fuse panel back you have to remove part of the left side of the panel with a knive until the panel clicks in place again Mount the side panel, dashboard glove box and radio panel. Lead the mass wire (gray) to the bolt at the bottom of the Center Console (to the right of the hand brake). Turn the blank wire end around a larger washer and put this washer over the bolt then use a nut (M5?) to tighten the washer with the connected wire. Remove the Ford shift knob by turning the knob anti-clockwise. Now you have to make a hole in the plastic plate of the shift lever boot to let the Shift knob connector through. Carefully make a square cutout next to the round hole at position 9 o’clock. Lead the plus wire with connector through the boot plate. Mount the clamping ring on the Shift Knob with the radius down. Click the connector in the Shift Knob and place the Shift Knob on the Shift rod. Tighten the shift knob on the shift rod by turning the Allen bolt clockwise with the supplied Allen key. Stick the supplied 6-gear pattern sticker on the Center Console below the SYNC label. Now I have to wait till my AM Shift knob comes in before I can give you instructions about the programming and changing colors.
