Loud when you want, quiet when you want, no drone!
Just put these axle-backs on my 2007 GT (V8, manual) which is otherwise completely stock. Normally, I don’t recommend Ford after-market products as other companies just seem to do it better, but I have to admit the folks at Ford-Racing got it right this time. I was looking for the perfect combination of loud, but refined sound and tolerable everyday driving (without the neighbors hating me) and this hits the spot! I tried SLP Loudmouths and they were just annoyingly loud (might as well just cut off your exhaust with a chainsaw and let it rip). The sound was raspy, extremely noisy and had an annoying drone. I also tried the Borla Touring exhaust which by comparison was very quiet (no louder than stock) and also had a very noticeable drone. I have heard that the Borla ATAK and S-Type also have drone, and I’m here to say that the Touring also has drone. What I thought originally was a beefed up exhaust turned out to be a quiet rear with a buzzing cabin especially around 1,700-2,500 rpm. I was surprised because Borlas cost a lot of money. This review of course is just comparing all of these axle backs to stock with no other modifications done. Maybe if you add in a different H-pipe/x-pipe or headers it might sound different but just stock Borla axle backs drone a lot. Now there came the Ford Racing FR500S axle-backs. When you start them up they are loud. They will wake the neighbors up, HOWEVER, by comparison, when I cold-started my stock-muffler mustang it was loud and woke the neighbors up so you should not use that to make a decision because they are all loud at the start. After the FR500s’s run a while you start to hear their true beauty. A beautiful refined V8 rumble, slightly louder than stock but deep and throaty. Now, when you hit the gas up to 2,000 they are still quiet with just a very nice throaty v8 rumble (AND ZERO DRONE). Go past 2,000 and these things open up. It’s literally like they have a side vent or something. All of a sudden she comes alive and lets out this deep throaty roar. It’s a sound that says “I am a V8, don’t mess with me” but it doesn’t say “I’m a 17 year old trying to show off”. On WOT (wide open throttle) it’s just an awesome deep, throaty growl that will give you a lot of attention but you can always tone it down by keeping around the 2,000’s. Finally, all across the board NO DRONE!!!! ABSOLUTELY NONE!!!! I can’t believe it! I mean it is literally quiet in the cabin and the noise you hear is coming from the tips of the exhaust like it should. SO, in summary, I use this car for daily driving. I don’t have the luxury of having a weekend car. I wanted something I could push the pedal with and have people look at me, but also something that if a cop is driving behind me or I want to listen to music or talk in the car I could also do that. In the morning, I start the car in 2nd gear and roll out quietly and then let it warm up and she quiets down. Perfect daily driver that says I’m a mustang and no drone at all! Hope this helps. I spent A LOT of time watching videos online and went through these carefully selected exhausts so I am writing this honestly because I know how frustrating it is to get that perfect sound.
