Do I need this if I already have an SCT Tuner? The BAMA tune form has a section for tire size and gear ratio, so my question is leaning towards: Is it really necessary for me to purchase such an item when I can get a free BAMA tune for my upgraded 4.10 gears? It just doesn't make sense to purchase the re-calibration tool if a customer already has a Tuner... if that's the case then it should be in the product description so that people aren't mislead.

  • That is correct. If you already have a tuner, you can just get an updated tune to account for the change in gear ratio. No need to purchase this as well; you just need one or the other.

Necessary for an automatic 97? I have the Bama SCT tuner and I am going to change my gears to the 4.10. Is this recalibration tool necessary or will the tuner take care of it?

  • 1996 to 1998 requires the Speedometer Recalibration Tool. The BAMA Tuner, while great, can't fix the speedometers for those years.

tire size change recalibration I have an '08 Shelby GT and recently purchased the 20" Shelby Razors thru AM. Do I need this tool to keep my speedometer correct? I am not planning on changing the tune in the near future. Thanks.

  • 08SGT If you kept your overall tire diameter the same as what you had prior to your change. Then there should be many change in the speedometer. If you increased or decreased the overall tire diameter. The, the speedometer would be off, and re-calibration is necessary. Duke7

    Great Product

1995 Mustang GT 5.0 AODE This is a great product. The Ford Racing Speedometer Recalibration Tool works exactly as described. I installed mine in the engine bay near the firewall according to the alternate directions. I choose to solder everything and grounded to the shock tower. I have 3.73 gears and an unknown speedometer driven gear. To calibrate the speedometer I set the cruise on the freeway and compared the speedometer to a GPS (Iphone Dashboard App) and came up with a multiplier that way. This unit has very good resolution. You can get your speedometer exactly right. Very important if you have an automatic and want to re-tune your shift points as they are based on speed not RPM. Always confirm your grounds.

    New gears? You need this!

After reading some of these reviews, I was afraid I would waste my time & money on this item. I did some research prior to ordering, then after receiving the unit, I contacted Ford racing tech. The gentleman I spoke with made it a point to tell me to be sure to connect the negative lead straight to the battery! That piece of advice must have made the difference for me, because once everything was connected under the hood, my road test was spot on! I had installed a new 8.8 w/3.73 gears, moving from a 7.5 w/2.73 gears. I did the math, set the unit as instructed. The speedometer resumed it's correct speed readings, odometer was correct, without any oddities exhibited. Thanks AM for carrying this quality product from Ford Racing! Installation took about 1.5 hours to get a clean, unnoticeable addition under the hood. This is the only solution for 94-98 model cars. I like it for my '97!

    Works as designed!

I've read a few unfortunate stories about this product on the web, so I was a little leery of it. I ordered it anyway, as it seemed the best choice in terms of quality and reliability when compared to other similar products. Installation was a breeze in my 1997 GT after the wires were identified. It was installed under the hood near the firewall on the passenger side. Soldered all connections and grounded to the factory hood hinge ground bolt. This tool didn't seem to work during the initial drive. Speed readings were ridiculously high. I tried different calculations and settings, but nothing seemed to help. I began to wonder if my device was defective. After looking at the unit, I wondered why I assumed the unit was right side up in terms of setting the dials. There was no indication of what way was "UP" or "TOP". So I flipped the unit around and reset my dials. BINGO! NOW it was working! This was money well spent for me. Easy install, easy set up, quality product, works as designed!

2002 Mustang GT Auto - Did Not Work

Installed as directions stated. Direction stated that when dials are all at "0" that speedo would show 45, mine showed 25. For 4.10 gears, set the dials to 080. Driving down the road, would fluctuate from actual speed. Speedometer needle would not just stay at the actual speed. Shift points no longer worked, would not shift correct. Would almost have to blow the engine before the transmission shifted to the next gear.

    Speed Cal works

Works just as advertised. Simple installation, but directions don't state that you need to open the black box to access the 3 calibration dials. Beyond that, great product and recal'ed my speedo perfectly after 3.73 gear install in my 96 GT.

    Too easy!

purchased and installed the calibrator in my '00 Manual GT. I have many extras and as often as i change my setup from street to strip this tool is a savior. I used the under hood method at the 16-pin connector becuase it just didn't seem practical to crawl under the car everytime I needed an adjustment. With simple wiring tools, and a little common sense, very easy. took me about 15 mins from start to test drive. As always, great product, great shipping, great genuine Ford Racing Quality, great purchase.

i read the reviews, everything went like the others said. followed terrible instructions, finally got it to make speedometer to work, but it only sat at 25. driving speedo jumped all over the place o/d light kept blinking and shift points were off. i'm glad i didn't solder things till i tried it. i dislike the vague instructions,i dislike the fact it don't work. i need my speedometer to work. somebody has to get busy and fix the problem this item has with automatic trans.

A Must Have for Gear changes!!

This item is a must have for any 94-98 Mustang needing a speedometer recalibration. I changed the rear end and gears in my '97 which caused a terrible fluctuation in my speedometer. Every bit of research I could do all suggested this tool to make things right. It does work! One tip the Ford racing Tech made about being sure to run the ground directly to the battery though made the difference. Took me about 1.5 hours to install under the hood, but I wanted it factory looking, so yours may not take as long. Speedometer is correct at all speeds now. AM folks were helpful with my questions and quick to get me the product. Another win product from American Muscle & Ford Racing!

    Speedometer Recalibration Tool

The instructions should show detail of the dials to make the setup less confusing. Once understood, the tool is easy to use and works as advertised.
