Review & Install Video

Hey everybody, Dave here with Bama performance, and today I have this Ford racing cold air intake kit. This kit comes with a new large diameter tube and a higher flowing filter, with a Ford racing logo heat shield. Now, with its deep box to keep a lot of the heat from the engine out, and a high flowing filter, this is guaranteed to pick you up a massive amount of horse power. We ran our car this morning on the dyno to get some stock numbers. We produced 257 horse power and 285 ft/lbs of torque. We installed a 93 octane Bama race tune, here’s what this will do for you. It’ll give you optimized spark timing, adjust your variable cam timing, give you a perfect air/fuel ratio, and dramatically improve your throttle response. We then took 15-20 minutes to install our Ford racing cold air intake kit. We re-ran it on the dyno combined with a Bama tune. And we showed up with 23 more horse power, and 22 more ft/lbs of torque. Leave it to the folks at Ford racing to make a cold air intake kit that not only produces power, but looks great under the hood of your Mustang. The Ford racing cold air intake kit was a breeze to install, and produced 23 more horse power, and 22 more ft/lbs of torque.

More Power. Replace your restrictive stock intake with a Ford Racing Cold Air Intake for better incoming airflow that results in more power and improved throttle response. The Ford Racing GT Cold Air Intake Kit features a 85mm mass air meter housing that will help increase your Mustangs power by up to 20 rwhp. This is the same Cold Air Intake that came stock on the 2008-2009 Bullitt Mustang.

OEM Quality and Fit. Utilizing OEM quality components the Ford Racing Cold Air Intake Kit mounts in the stock location and features a high flow molded plastic bucket with a unique air tube that provides an enhanced intake sound.

Required Upgrade. Installation of this Cold Air Intake will require the use of a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for operation.

Application. This Ford Racing Cold Air Intake is designed to fit the 2005 to 2009 GT Mustangs and includes a 85mm mass air meter housing (reuse of mass air meter sensor required).

Technical Note: The included air filter is not reusable, replacement filter is Ford Racing p/n M-9601-B.

Will this still allow you to have HIDs? I am thinking of buying this CAI and would also like to put HIDs in my car. However it looks like the heat shield sits right where the ballast for the HIDs would go and thus interfering with it being positioned properly. Can anyone tell me if you can still have HIDs with this product installed?

BMagic

  • The Ford HIDs will fit. 08/09 Bullitts came stock with this cai, and many of them had HIDs from the factory. The Steeda HID kit should also work as it supposedly uses the same parts as the stock Ford HIDs.

xCal 2 If I already own an xCalibrator 2 device, can I use this device and a tune from your company for this cold air intake? Is the tune included or must it be purchased separately? I ask because your site says "requires xCal 3" but I'd rather keep my current xCal 2.

Anonymous2

  • Bama can write tunes for your xCal2. This FR 85mm CAI does not come with any tunes however. Please give our Bama team a call and they can get you all taken care of!

What other tuners can be used to tune this cai? Can the Diablosport Trinity T-1000 Tuner with Bama tunes be used to tune the Ford Racing 85mm Cold Air Intake (05-09 GT)?

1TrickPony

  • It absolutely can! You just want to make sure you specify the Ford Racing Cold Air Intake on the tune information sheet so our Bama team can include it on your tune files!

Is there a possible replacement air filter for this CAI? If this is the same cold air filter used in the 2008-2009 Bullitt Mustang as stated in the "More Power" section above, can the K & N Replacement Air Filter (08-09 Bullitt) Item #92024 be used as a "Direct Fit Replacement" as stated?

I'm new to modding and wasn't sure if a CAI would make any real difference. I purchased an SCT tuner first and saw a difference by retuning and switching to 91 octane after which I doubted whether or not the intake was responsible for the 10-15HP gains that Ford Racing claimed. Well, I installed this CAI and retuned again two weeks ago. It's definitely not a waste of money. My potholed alley is now kinda sketchy due to the improved throttle response. It certainly feels like I'm getting more air into the engine and it altered the sound of my stock exhaust for the better. It fits perfectly. I lined the edge with baking soda and closed the hood to confirm that it indeed makes contact and is separated from the engine bay. This intake is designed to draw air from between the hood and grill/headlight but it does have a 2.5" hole toward the front of it where you can install a rubber plug that is supplied. Instead, I installed a hardened hose that reaches down into the wheel well to ensure access to plenty of fresh air. I'm actually fairly certain that's why the hole/plug exists in the first place. There is also a small hole in the bottom behind the filter that was easy enough to plug with a rubber hole plug from the hardware store. No instructions were included but the install was straight forward and easy anyway.

I've had this CAI for about 3 months now and it still makes me smile every time I drive. It only cost me $30 to gert it installed and it looks as if the car rolled off the assembly line with it. It provides a noticeably more aggressive sound and much quicker acceleration. My car is an automatic and there is no longer that annoying lag in changing gears, I have spun the tires goind from 2nd to 3rd gear now actually. I love the improved perfromance and my gas mileage has not decreased at all. I highly recommend this product to anyone wanting to improve performance without going broke.

    good first performance mod

this was the first performance mod that i did to my 09 mustang. This will help get a little more air get into your engine than the stock air intake. This will not by any means give you any outrageous horsepower gains but will be noticeable mostly after a tune. This is easily installed even if you have little to no mechanical skills, as long as you follow the installation instructions provided under the "installation" tab on this item. however, make sure you follow the instructions well, although they are simple, if you forget to plug something back in and turn on your car you can cause damage. so if you are not feeling up to the task, just ask someone who has experience to help you! If i had to do it over again i may have gone with the air rade cold air intake because it has a slightly bigger tube. but all in all i am happy with this purchase Other things to keep in mind: -I would suggest buying this with the bama tuner offered on americanmuscle. if you do not, putting this in your pony without a tune will cause a check engine light to come on because more air is going through the maf meter than your car is used to. -Buying the bama tuner will not only keep you from getting a check engine light, but it will also help you free up some extra horsepower

FRPP 85mm CAI - good quality design

I live in a very hot and humid climate and had issues with an other popular CAI taking in too much hot air due to poor design, materials and whimpy filter shroud. The design of the FRPP takes air from outside of the car via the gap between the hood and the grill. It also sheilds the intake better from engine bay heat. I have a custom performance tune from AM and could not be happier.

    Great intake from ford

The ford racing intake is a great solution if you want to maintain your factory warranty. Performance wise I have noticed a decent increase in torque and power. In Terms of Installation it does not get much easier than this...it's allready assembled for you out of the factory and just requires a quick swap with the stock airbox. In comparison to other intakes it is significantly quieter which is the only down side in my opinion!

this CAI fit like a glove and looks killer. It comes assembled and ready to put in right out of the box. The only bad part and this is an easy fix is the filter is not reusable but it you buy a K&N filter for a stock 08 mustang Bullitt it will fit right in and will give you a reusable filter.

    FRPP CAI Review

I did a lot of research on CAI's via youtube, word of mouth, and of course AM videos and reviews. I decided to go with Ford Racing even though its slightly higher in price because its a Ford product, it looks great and the housing protects it very well. Im decently mechanically inclined so i opted to do it myself and was not sorry for it. Install time took about 45 minutes start to finish and another 10 to flash the computer with my tuner to correct the changed fuel/air ratio, obviously without the new tune from AM it will run lean so don't go there. Took the car right out on my performance tune and felt a decent increase in HP, nothing to plant you but we all know its a slow expensive process to get there! (for the average joe that is). I have an 06 GT manual with the SCT tuner and tunes from AM, pypes pype bomb axlebacks if you were wondering. I would absolutely recommend this product...a great and necessary addition to your powerhouse.

    Ford Racing - Great CAI

Excellent product. Had very little issue with installation and fit was perfect. In my opinion, this is the best looking CAI on the market. Adding this and the FRPP Performance Tune (91 octane) Made a great deal of difference in throttle response. Now just have to get to the dragstrip and see how it improved my times.

    Great first mod

After a year of driving with this filter, i have to say it was a great mod (along with BAMA tune). It's not going to turn your mustang into a race car but the increase in power, drop-in perfect fit, build quality, and the attached heat shroud that fully protects the filter as opposed to what the other aftermarket filter kits offer, make this a no-brainer first mod and I feel like all mustangs should have rolled out of the factory with it. I never worry about splash from driving through puddles and I was pleased with how much quicker it gets up to speed now. *NOTE: the included stud that attaches to the radiator support was too small in diameter which required one of two fixes; either replace the c- clip which meant temporarily unbolting the ABS module (too much work) OR using a spare bolt and washer i had laying around. Bolt size was M8x60x1.25. No nut required as the bolt tightens into the stock c-clip. I actually preferred this method as it looks a LOT sturdier than the stud supplied with this kit.

    Get this one!

Ran the JLT CAI for over a year with BABA Perf. tune and was great for a while. Resently, as I was cleaning under the hood noticed the JLT filter was cracking and drying out. After removing the JLT I noticed the trottle body and Mass air sencer were really dirty (as compaired to when I removed the stock air filter box). After Cleaning the JLT Filter I was not confortable reintallinging it. Ordered and installed the FRPP CAI last week with the a BABA 93 Race tune. WOW!!!!!! big differance. Much better trottle responce and the FRPP looks alot better under the hood. MPG took a big hit (19 HW), but I also order a 87 street, and 91 Perf. tune which should be better MPG but I'm loving the race tune too much right now to change it. Probably, run the 87 street tune when then the weather turns.

    Excellent Product..

THe Ford Racing line of products are excellent in quality and fit. Nothing wrong with aftermarket parts, but there's something to be said about using Ford Racing mods. I would recommend this CAI to anyone looking to a simple but important mod. Team it up with a tuner and you're in business.

Looks great and nice performance bump!

I had a non tuned CAI on my car before and never cared for it. Didn't like the look when I opened the hood and new there were better units out there. I Opted to go with the Ford Racing CAI and the BAMA tuner, and everything lived up to my expectations. Install went quite easily and of course adding the tune just takes a few minutes as well. Thanks!

I matched the FRPP CAI with the twin 62 throttlebody, intake, 24lb injectors, hot rod cams, Kooks mid-lengths and x-pipes, Flowmaster American Thunder axle-backs, under-pulleys, aluminum driveshaft, and FRPP 4.10s all from AM. Dyno pulled 335 rwhp. Love it. Had a few small issues but AM helped me through all of them.

Super easy installation but still would be nice if it came with one page instructions not the link to website to download. Had to find front tie down bolt as it was either missing or does not come with this particular unit. Great looking and I like the Ford Racing logo under the hood.
