Review & Install Video

I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m taking a closer look at Pypes polished long tube headers for the 2005-2010 Mustang GT. These headers have been getting some very positive reviews here on the site thanks to their performance, and quality of fit and finish so let’s break them down. Long tube headers are designed to completely replace your factory exhaust manifolds which really restrict your exhaust flow. Basically by installing a set of long tubes you’re going to see an increase of horsepower and torque at the rear wheels. The first thing you’ll notice is that the headers are made from 304 grade stainless steel and feature mandrel bent tubing throughout to really increase that exhaust flow. Now one thing I took note of immediately was the quality of the TIG welds, you’ll find great penetration at both the header flange, and the collector which means the quality of the welds are going to be very good and very strong to prevent cracking in the future. Sometimes on lesser quality headers the welds can be poor, resulting in premature wear and cracking. Another thing which gets a big thumbs up from me is that all the welds on the inside of the header have been smoothed out to reduce turbulence and increase air flow, even down to this massive collector which has been smoothed out as well. Not only will that polished stainless steel look great under the hood, but it’s also going to resist corrosion so these headers remain looking good for years to come, especially when they get the chance to heat cycle a few times when that silver turns into a very cool copper color. This is a pretty intense install here guys so if you don’t have the mechanical know how to tackle the job, then I would recommend taking it to your local ‘shop so they can install these headers properly. However if you’re confident enough to tackle the job, I would definitely leave yourself a full day to get the job done properly. A big thing to point out when installing these Pypes long tube headers, is that you’re going to need the Pypes Off-road H or X pipe, to get everything bolted up properly. That’s because the dimensions of these aftermarket long tube headers are different to your factory meaning they’re not going to bolt up to your stock mid pipe, or even an aftermarket regular length mid pipe, and that is why you need the shorty H or X pipe to make these headers work correctly. What you can expect when using Pypes polished long tube headers is a noticeable power gain over your factory exhaust manifold or even a shorty setup as well. You’re also going to see increased throttle response, and a slightly more aggressive exhaust note, especially if you decide to go with one of those off-road H or X pipes. Check them out today at AmericanMuscle.com.

Increase horsepower and torque. A set of Pypes V8 Long Tube headers will greatly improve your S197 Mustangs exhaust flow over the restrictive factory manifolds and will increase your pony's horsepower and torque for better throttle response.

Quality Construction. Pypes Long Tube Exhaust headers are constructed from free flowing CNC mandrel-bent 1-5/8" 304 stainless steel tubing and are then completed in a bright polished finish for great looks and long life.

Recommended Upgrade. To realize the full power potential that these Long Tube Headers have to offer, AmericanMuscle recommends a custom tune with a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for proper operation.

Application. Designed to fit the 2005-2010 GT Mustangs. These Pypes Long Tube headers will require the use of Pypes shorty style X-pipe or H-pipe for proper installation on your 2005-2010 Mustang GT.

Technical Note. Not legal for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles; intended for off road use only. Both header bolts and gaskets are included for this item. These Pypes Long Tube headers reuse the factory header bolts and will require new gaskets.

I'm considering getting these Headers but I am wondering if they will fit with the Pypes Off-Road H-Pipe and with my current Ford Racing axle back exhausts. I just want that classic Muscle Car exhaust note and I understand H-Pipes are the way to go. The horsepower gains from the full exhaust setup is just a bonus. Any feedback appreciated.

What is the predicted rwhp gain with this set up? I have Shelby off road H-pipes cat delete and glass packs thanks!!

    • The Pypes Polished Long Tube Headers (05-10 GT) will definitely give you an increase in both horsepower and torque. As for how much horsepower you will gain depends on everything that is done to the car. Since you are running a more free flowing mid pipe, you'll definitely see a nice improvement in power once these headers are added. Another recommendation, if you don't already have, would be to purchase the Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner w/ 2 Custom Tunes (05-10 GT, Bullitt), item # 101200G05, (http://www.americanmuscle.com/x4-custom-tuner-0510gt.html).This Bama Tuner comes with custom tunes that will accommodate your new exhaust system thus increasing the performance of the car. While the tuner is not required for these part, it is a good idea to get one after you do some modifications that affect the airflow of the vehicle. Not to mention, the Free Tunes For Life would be great for any future mods you have in mind!

Muffler question for this setup? If I buy these long tube headers paired with their shorty X-pipe, could I use my already installed Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust with this setup? What kind of sound would I get? Or would you recommend the Pypes Pype-Bomb Axle-back exhaust which has no mufflers instead? With the headers, X-pipe, and Pype-Bomb, would it be too loud for a daily driver? I don't mind irritating my neighbors but don't want to be harassed daily by my local PD either.

    soonerchris

    • If you are definitely decided on buying the headers and shorty x-pipe then I would install them and try it with your flowmasters. I think you will be very happy with the sound of that combination. It's gonna be LOUD! If it is still not loud enough then you can always buy and bolt-on a pypes bomb system. As you know, catbacks are easy to change and bolt-on. IMO adding pypes bomb would be unbearable from the cockpit for a DD.

Do i need Pypes high flow cats? I am thinking about purchasing these headers for my 2008 mustang GT with the H-pipe. I was wondering if I will need to also purchase the Pypes high flow Cats to go along with these or not?

    Provine

    • If you want catalytic converters, then yes you should purchase them. However if you do not want cats, then you do not need them as they are not necessary for the installation of the Pypes Polished Long Tube Headers (05-10 GT).

    • As long as your Pypes X-Pipe is for long tube headers, the Pypes Polished Long Tube Headers (05-10 GT) will work with your current setup.

Awesome headers but rough to install.

Just wanted to mention that no one in my town would touch these headers with and off road mid pipe. (not sure about onr with cats). Apparently EPA has some pretty stiff regulations for modifying exhaust. I did the install myself but the included gasket went bad and I got a heavy leak. most likely from my poor installation I job. I didn't want to do it myself again, but couldn't find anyone willing to work on them. My set also didn't come with new bolts (or i lost then) and the manufacture bolts are a big pain with these headers given the length of the bolt. I just ordered the Ford racing gaskets and plan on tackling the leak this weekend with new bolts as well.

      Nice finish for full boltons

Installed a set of these headers today. Fit was great even on an auto. Install instructions from American Muscle customer was perfect and a must need. Did without a lift but car was about a foot and a half off the ground on 4 large jack stands and it worked well enough. My first ever header install but I had help from someone who has done installs before. Hardest part is that everything is time consuming. Getting to half of the bolts requires some creative positioning. If I did again I would probably take the time to drop the kmember. It will make things a lot easier in the long run. The stock stuff came out fine except for a few studs which we took cad of with some nuts back against each other and some vicescripes. The biggest pain is getting the top header bolts in and tightening all bolts down without hitting anything. Other things that took some creativity are the o2 sensors and their wiring. I have a Bama tune and I'm not sure if it uses then sensors or not since I specified off road exhast. But i didnt want to take any chances so we made sure to hook them up. We took the black cylinder that the sensors are pluged into (pictured in customer pics) that is attached to the Bell housing on the transmission off and zip tied it to a bracket on the driver's side of the transmission oil pan and used to extension provided to reach over to the passenger side sensor and tied it up. It works perfectly and looks almost factory. Getting the upper o2 sensors connected is THE hardest part. You have to reach up practically on top of the transmission to try and plug them in. Spent a good half hour alone trying to get both hooked up. But after that was done we fired her up before hooking the mufflers and mid pipe up and holy wow. Only reved to 2k and was scared to death. Used the offroad h pipe due to wanting the sound you get with an h pipe. First drive with everything buttoned up was great! At first it will smoke but that's perfectly normal. Something noticed immediately was how quiet it in in the cabin now. Before I was running with disconnected mufflers and they had a ton of drone. All the drone is completely gone now. Loudness is about the same to no mufflers on idle but reving is so much louder. It has a nice sound with the h pipe and pypes violator mufflers. Its a little tin can sounding right now with the 3 chamber muffler but I assume they might break in some more now and sound better. If not then I'll just get some other axle back. Mid muffler pypes would probably sound pretty boss with this set up. I could definitely tell an increase in power. With full intake mods ( jlt 110mm and sr performance throttle body) the headers fit perfectly. Gears definitely feel shorter and in an auto with 3.73s thats saying something! I recommend these 100 to anyone looking at them. Just make sure you or a helper knows what they are doing. It will make things much better. Overall took about 8 hours with everything.

Best value for performance, fit & finish

I decided to buy these headers after a lot of research and after talking with several S197 GT owners that had many different brands of headers installed on their cars. Let me just say the fit, performance and sound of these Pypes long tubes is just flat out incredible. The install went well and as far as the installation, well, they're headers. What do you expect? If you've never done this before, find someone who has to help you or pay a shop to do it. The driver side was the most challenging, what with the steering shaft & column being required to be repositioned out of the way and the configuration of the tubes. Passenger side went in very easily, with plenty of clearance on both sides. Finished off the install with the matching Pypes shorty off-road X. Initially, I had series 40 Flowmasters on the car with the cats. It was a little too obnoxious-loud for me, so I changed those out for a set of manual GT stock mufflers. MUCH better & NO drone. All my buddies loved the no-cat/Flowmaster combo, but they didn't have to live with it! I have the FRPP hot rod cams & the headers really enhance the sound of the cams as well as the performance. If you want awesome performance, perfect fit & great looks, look no further than these headers. You won't be disappointed.

      Three tenths faster!

I ran my 2010 mustang GT stock and ran a nine flat in the eight mile. After the Pypes Long tube polished headers install I ran the eight mile at 8.7 at a much higher altitude track. The headers made me more than thirty horsepower on an otherwise stock Mustang. The headers have been installed now for almost a year and they still look great! They were somewhat difficult to install but the sound and power difference definitely made it worthwhile.

Pypes LT Headers O/R X and Borla Stingers

I love these Headers had them on my car for about 3 Months now and have had ZERO Problems with them. The install was easy with simple hand tools it just took some time about 8 hours with a friends and myself. The best thing about these Headers is the price. For the person looking for great looks and great power but don't to spend $1200.00 for Kooks this is your best bet and i'm glad i went with them. Paired with off road X Pipe and Borla Stingers the sound is LOUD when you hit the gas and as for going down the Hwy at 70-80 there isn't a lot of drone. So if your in the market for some Long Tube Headers and don't have they cash or want to spend 1200.00 for KOOKS this is your best bet.

      GREAT FIT GOOD QUALITY

Great sound and quality. Expect to spend some time putting them on, allow yourself at least four hours to install them. I used the headers with the off road x pipe and kept my stock mufflers and you can feel the power increase. I will post a review after I take it to the dyno and get some numbers.

      Quality product with excellent sound!!

Fantastic addition especially when paired with the Pypes o/r xpipe and Pypes mid muffler cat back system. Note: You MUST get a new x or h pipe with this. It doesn't fit with the stock H. I know it says that down there somewhere but I missed it when purchasing. Getting the driverside pipe on was a little tough, but that's more because of the car than the product. All in all now that is on, I love it and exceptionally pleased with its performance.

Sounds insane and cost next to nothing!

For the price, you can't go wrong with these. The install was a pain, but that was expected for long tube headers. Don't use the header gaskets that come with it. Pay like $25 and get the ford racing gaskets. These headers sound amazing. I have them coupled with Pypes H-Pipe and Pypes, Pype-Bomb mufflers. My car is insanely loud now, but that's what I was going for. If you want loud, go with these headers!

      Best Bang For Your Buck

These headers are my favorite mod so far. They look great (not that you can really see them), sound great, and gave me a noticeable gain in HP and TQ. I installed these with a catted Pypes H-pipe and they sound amazing. I have Ford Racing cams and the car sounds exactly like an old muscle car now. As for power, I gained 30HP according to the same Dynojet dyno under similar conditions. I'm completely satisfied and recommend these to anyone looking for headers.

      Best headers for the price!

Out of the box they have a gorgeous polished polished look, arrived on time and in mint condition! Took them to a shop to get them installed and in total with the installation of the headers and the mid pipe took about 5 hours worth of labor, but man is it worth it! When I pulled up to the shop to pick it up, I could hear it rumbling from a good distance away! The technician said that these were one of the best fitting headers he has ever dealt with and the performance gain is awesome, you can definitely feel it in the "butt dyno". All in all, these headers are amazing and for cheaper than just about every other set of headers out there besides the cheap pacesetters and barely more expensive than MAC. Can't beat it!

      Great job Pypes

We have been extremely impressed with the quality of the fit and finish on these headers. Sound with Cat delete H-Pipe, Series 40 Flowmaster's, as well as hot rod cams in 4.6 3V is outstanding. You will not be disappointed! On a side note my headers came missing one collector bolt, washers and nut. I called AM and said they would take care of it. In about 3 to 4 days I received a box strait from Pypes. This box contained full set of mounting hardware including gaskets!!!!!! Great job AM and Pypes.

Have a week put aside for install!

The quality is spot on. Now let's get to the install part. I'm sure you will find many combination's of colorful words you did not even know existed during this tortuous process of putting the headers on. My Mustang GT only has 8,000 miles on it with no rust anywhere and it was a pain in the tail! All shop's I contacted wanted $800.00 to start plus unforeseen problem's, most estimating the bill to roll in over $1,100.00. My only suggestion is to use 6-Ton jack stands as you will need the 24" height, and plenty of Days allotted for this DYI project.
